  • Single cell genomics of uncultured marine alveolates shows paraphyly of basal dinoflagellates
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The ISME Journal. - : Macmillan Publishers Ltd.. - 1751-7362 .- 1751-7370. ; 12, s. 304-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Marine alveolates (MALVs) are diverse and widespread early-branching dinoflagellates, but most knowledge of the group comes from a few cultured species that are generally not abundant in natural samples, or from diversity analyses of PCR-based environmental SSU rRNA gene sequences. To more broadly examine MALV genomes, we generated single cell genome sequences from seven individually isolated cells. Genes expected of heterotrophic eukaryotes were found, with interesting exceptions like presence of proteorhodopsin and vacuolar H+-pyrophosphatase. Phylogenetic analysis of concatenated SSU and LSU rRNA gene sequences provided strong support for the paraphyly of MALV lineages. Dinoflagellate viral nucleoproteins were found only in MALV groups that branched as sister to dinokaryotes. Our findings indicate that multiple independent origins of several characteristics early in dinoflagellate evolution, such as a parasitic life style, underlie the environmental diversity of MALVs, and suggest they have more varied trophic modes than previously thought.

  • Functionality Gaps in IT Systems for Maintenance Management
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of COMADEM. - 1363-7681. ; 15:4, s. 38-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • E-maintenance is an information intensive concept highly dependent on relevant and reliable information technology (IT) support. One important prerequisite is that IT functionality fits the demands of the maintenance organisation. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the existence of functionality gaps in the IT applications used for maintenance management. To accomplish the purpose a questionnaire survey asking professional users to estimate the misalignments/gaps in their current IT support. Functionality and information investigated are based on the standard EN 13460 documents for maintenance. The gathered data was thereafter analysed using statistical methods. The study reveals that the used IT solutions in general provide good support for maintenance management. However, the respondents perceive gaps to some degree in functionality and data related to maintenance follow up and improvement. The study indicates some contradicting results regarding IT and functionality for maintenance follow up and improvement. Some users state that there is a need for additional IT-support related to maintenance follow up and improvement while other state that the support exists but are not used. More in-depth studies of the reasons behind these contradicting results and also research in reasons behind apprehended gaps are required.

  • Determinants of exploitation of innovative venture ideas : A study of nascent entrepreneurs in an advisory system
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study contributes to nascent entrepreneurship research by investigating factors on the individual and opportunity levels of analysis that determine the exploitation of innovative venture ideas. As a result of the literature review three theoretical perspectives were chosen to organize the factors: human and social capital, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and domain definition strategy. The analysis of the chosen factors is based on hypotheses formulated on the basis of the literature review concerning the impact of the factors on the performance of nascent entrepreneurs during the discovery process. Empirical data were collected from the survey of 409 nascent entrepreneurs who addressed a public advisory agency in Stockholm area.Research findings show that among all factors, statistically significant predictors of exploitation of venture ideas are social capital in terms of the contact with counselors and number of ties with different actors, planning and marshaling self-efficacy, initial investment, tangibility and innovativeness of the future offerings. As for the direction of relationships, too many ties with different networks and higher planning self-efficacy influence exploitation in a negative way. Among variables related to domain definition strategy, entrepreneurs with innovative venture ideas based on services have higher probability of exploiting their ideas. Those who have made initial investment into the development of venture ideas and have a frequent contact with counselors are more likely to continue exploitation efforts. Of five dimensions of entrepreneurial self-efficacy, higher marshaling self-efficacy was shown to positively contribute to the exploitation process. It is especially difficult during the early stages of entrepreneurial process to predict which venture ideas will survive, thus, nascent entrepreneurship assistance should encourage experimentation. Although it is difficult to make generalizations from the study about nascent entrepreneurs in the Stockholm area, it can be advised to encourage the development of new services and enhance the entrepreneurial potential of nascent entrepreneurs by developing their entrepreneurial self-efficacy, especially marshaling self-efficacy.

  • Adopting 3-Year Screening Intervals for Sight-Threatening Retinal Vascular Lesions in Type 2 Diabetic Subjects Without Retinopathy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Care. - : American Diabetes Association. - 1935-5548 .- 0149-5992. ; 34:6, s. 1318-1319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE-To report the incidence of sight-threatening vascular lesions in type 2 diabetic subjects without retinopathy after adopting a 3-year interval screening program. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-In all, 1,691 type 2 diabetic subjects with no detectable retinopathy in two 50 degrees red-free fundus photographs were scheduled for follow-up with photography 3 years later. Age at diabetes diagnosis was 60 +/- 12 years, and known duration of diabetes was 6 +/- 6 years. Treatment consisted of diet only (26%), oral agents (54%), and oral agents and/or insulin (20%). Glycated hemoglobin A(1c) was 6.4 +/- 1.5%. RESULTS-Of the 1,322 subjects available for follow-up, 73% were still without retinopathy after 3 years, and 28% had developed mild or moderate retinopathy, but none developed severe nonproliferative or proliferative retinopathy. Macular edema requiring laser coagulation occurred in only one eye. CONCLUSIONS-Three-year retinal screening intervals can be recommended in subjects with mild type 2 diabetes and no retinopathy.

  • Empirical Studies in Consumption, House Prices and the Accuracy of European Growth and Inflation Forecasts
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis consists of four essays: Essay 1: The Role of Wealth in the Aggregated Consumption Function using an Error Correction Approach: Swedish Evidence from the years 1970 - 1993, an aggregated consumption function based on the life cycle hypothesis using the error correction methodology is estimated for Sweden. Aggregate wealth is spilt into net financial and housing wealth. The study finds that each of the primary components of wealth has an equal role for wealth. Essay 2: A Full Fledged Demand-Supply Econometric Model for Swedish Private housing (1970-2000), develops an econometric housing market model for Swedish Private Housing. A Stock-Flow model serves as the theoretical basis for the fundamental determinants of real estate construction and prices. The importance of the simulations and their usefulness to Swedish policy makers is discussed. Both ex post and ex ante forecasts using the model gives reasonable results. Essay 3: The Stock-Flow Model for Sweden and the United Kingdom: Econometric Analysis for the period 1970-1998, estimates quarterly dynamic housing demand and investment supply models for Sweden and the UK using the Error Correction Method. We investigate the degree of similarities and differences with respect to both the short and the long-term point estimates, elasticity, and the error correction speed of adjustment coefficients. The long run income elasticity for Sweden and the UK are constrained to be 1.0 respectively. The speed of adjustment on the demand side is 12% respective 23% while on the supply side is 6% and 48% for Sweden respectively the UK. Granger causality tests indicate that income granger causes house prices for Sweden, while for the UK there is also a feedback from house prices to income. In both countries Tobins'q Granger causes housing investment. Essay 4: The Accuracy of the European GDP and Inflation forecasts, evaluates the one-year ahead forecasts by the OECD and by the national institutes of GDP growth and inflation in 13 European countries. RMSE (Root mean square error) was large 1.9% for growth and 1.6% for inflation. Six (11) OECD and ten (7) institute growth forecasts record were significantly better than an average growth forecast (the current year forecast). All full record-length inflation forecasts were significantly better than both naive alternatives. Directional forecasts were significantly better than a naive alternative in one-half of the cases. Overall, inflation forecasts were signifantly more accurate than growth forecasts, and in contrast to growth forecasts, they generally improved over time. Positively biased revisions reveal large errors in data.
