  • Engaged Sisters : studying the entrepreneurship and innovation support system from ‘within’
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Entrepreneurship and innovation support has grown into large institutions in a society that cherishes an enterprising culture. Individuals are encouraged to be entrepreneurial and innovative in general, and to start up their own companies in particular. To support individuals in their business creation processes, policy stresses the need of providing with measures. Together these measures comprise a support system, directed towards supporting new and established entrepreneurs. It has however been recognized that the entrepreneurship and innovation public support system is highly gendered, favoring men and male businesses, whilst programs targeting women put the onus on individual women to start and grow businesses. As well it has been recognized that the policy support system tends to exclude ‘othered’ groups rather than including them in enterprising activities. The subtext of entrepreneurship support points to how some people “are” entrepreneurs, whilst others need support in order to become more entrepreneurial. Hence, there is a need to change the support system of entrepreneurship and innovation since it tends to disempower rather than to empower ‘othered’ groups in society.“Sisters in Business” make up an organization of wo/men entrepreneurs who have joined forces to address this need. Their vision is that entrepreneurship should reflect the society at large. During the last year they have therefore taken several initiatives to make this happen and is today one of the support organizations in a medium sized Swedish town. In this paper three Sisters are working together with a researcher within this area. Together we have formed a group of “engaged sisters´”. In our dialogue the dichotomy between ‘practice’ and ‘theory’ have temporarily dissolved in favor of creating narratives, from episodes, experiences and the everyday life of sister´s, to illustrate how the support system works from ‘within’. This led us to questioning whether the ‘support system’ really is a support system, or something else? Furthermore, this insight made it apparent that there exists ‘other’ support system, tough concealed and silenced. Finally, suggestions are proposed for how ‘practitioners’ can work together with ‘academics’ to change the rules of the game.

  • Impact of protease and lipase activities on quality of Swedish raw milk
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Dairy Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 0958-6946. ; 107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An increasing demand for dairy products with long shelf-life is foreseen. A limiting factor for maintaining high quality of these products is the activity of spoilage enzymes during storage. Lipase and protease activities in Swedish raw milk at farm and dairy level were investigated, analysing milk samples from three geographical regions and two seasons. Lipase activity in milk at farm level was affected by regional and seasonal variations, whereas at dairy level only season had an effect. Lipase activity was positively correlated with ionic calcium. For protease activity, no effect of either region or season was seen. Degradation products, e.g., free fatty acids, peptides and plasmin proteolysis products, varied differently between season and geographical origin at both farm and dairy level. The results indicate that lipase and protease activities are important for raw milk quality, while ionic calcium might be a future indicator for milk fat stability.

  • Fast-track access to urologic care for patients with macroscopic haematuria is efficient and cost-effective : results from a prospective intervention study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0007-0920 .- 1532-1827. ; 115, s. 770-775
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background:The delay between onset of macroscopic haematuria and diagnosis of bladder cancer is often long. Methods:We evaluated timely diagnosis and health-care costs for patients with macroscopic haematuria given fast-track access to diagnostics. During a 15-month period, a telephone hotline for fast-track diagnostics was provided in nine Swedish municipalities for patients aged ⩾50 years with macroscopic haematuria. The control group comprised 101 patients diagnosed with bladder cancer in the same catchment area with macroscopic haematuria who underwent regular diagnostic process. Results:In all 275 patients who called ‘the Red Phone’ hotline were investigated, and 47 of them (17%) were diagnosed with cancer and 36 of those had bladder cancer. Median time from patient-reported haematuria to diagnosis was 29 (interquartile range (IQR) 14−104) days and 50 (IQR 27−165) days in the intervention and the control group, respectively (P=0.03). The median health-care costs were lower in the intervention group (655 (IQR 655−655) EUR) than in the control group (767 (IQR 490−1096) EUR) (P=0.002).Conclusions:Direct access to urologic expertise and fast-track diagnostics is motivated for patients with macroscopic haematuria to reduce diagnostic intervals and lower health-care expenditures.British Journal of Cancer advance online publication, 25 August 2016; doi:10.1038/bjc.2016.265 www.bjcancer.com.

  • A steady flameless light : the phenomenology of realness in Dorothy Canfield Fisher's The brimming cup, Her son's wife and Rough-hewn
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study investigates the way in which experience comes to givenness in three novels by the early twentieth century American writer Dorothy Canfield Fisher (1879-1958). By utilizing a model of affectivity set up by the French phenomenologist Michel Henry, the investigation uncovers unthematized strata in The Brimming Cup (1921), Rough-Hewn (1922), and Her Son’s Wife (1926) in which subjectivity is phenomenalized as auto-affective and immanent. These strata are phenomenologically distinguished from those in which subjectivity comes to givenness as conditioned by transcendent, hyper-presentational presence. The investigation shows that in these novels, objectified presence is predominantly favored as real. Michel Henry’s distinction between affectivity and sensibility helps delineate the asymmetrical way in which affectivity as the primary, pre-self-conscious phenomenalization of subjectivity can be understood in relation to sensibility as the self-reflective, horizon-oriented phenomenalization of subjectivity. Methodologically, the study remains faithful to Edmund Husserl’s phenomenological reduction which excludes transcendent considerations of the texts.Michel Henry’s model of affectivity refutes Martin Heidegger’s understanding of subjectivity as always already thrown into a transcendent world. Nevertheless, Heidegger’s distinction between zuhanden and vorhanden is utilized in the study to clarify the integrity of a presence that cannot be posited in front of a presentational gaze. Canfieldian subjectivity is troubled by an inability to disentangle itself from this objective gaze and by its disbelief in the possibility of nonobjectified, yet real, experience. Instead subjectivity comes to validate realness as presentational vitality. Paradoxically, however, relief from suffering occurs primarily in instants that are free from phenomenalizations of life as vitalism. In such moments, subjectivity is phenomenalized as presentationally empty, existing in a nonpresentational space untouched by presentational meaning.

  • Ökat resursutnyttjande av plastförpackningar från on-the-go produkter
  • 2020

  • Valuable everyday encounters in early childhood education : narratives from professionals
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Early years. - : Routledge. - 0957-5146 .- 1472-4421. ; 42:4-5, s. 434-449
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents professionals’ narratives about valuableencounters with young children in early childhood education(ECE) settings. The study aims to provide an in-depth perspectiveon how professionals talk about ethics in practice, and the valuesaddressed in the narratives. Initially, professionals in Swedish ECEsettings defined their understanding of a valuable encounter witha child and then used a digital app to self-register 10 such encountersduring one day. After the self-registration, we interviewed theprofessionals and they told us about the encounters they hadexperienced. We identified three themes concerning who was thefocus of the encounters: the professional, the child, or both reciprocally.By using a narrative approach and Nussbaum’s ethicaltheoretical perspective, we show how different rationales wereinterwoven in the stories and that situated emotions were enactedand reflected. Finally, we noticed that many valuable encounterstook place in ‘in-between spaces’. They were not planned for ororganised, but occurred spontaneously through professionals’ sensitiveemployment of an ethics in practice.

  • Discourses of outdoor play at new modern preschools
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Conference proceedings. ; , s. 50-50
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is part of a larger research project with the aim with to study how the outdoor environment and playgrounds affects children's physical activities and relational encounters with nature and peers. Previous research has shown the benefits of children's outdoor play in domains like; health, environmental engagement and care, as well as learning and meaning making. Preschool policy and practice is constantly balancing and combining school-like concepts and play (Pramling Samuelsson & Johansson, 2007). This study uses John Dewey's holistic and pragmatic perspective to study and analyse different notions of relational and experiential learning activities outdoors. In this particular study we have analyzed the interviews with teachers from 21 new and old preschools. A discourse analysis was carried out to uncover the different notions within different domains of outdoor play. The study is ethically motivated since it contributes knowledge about childrens' conditions in preschool in a time of change. The project has ethical approval for all steps of research. The findings show how the new preschool playgrounds has changed the use of the outdoor environments, the view on the preschool practice, and children in itself. There are more regulations on what children can or cannot do, as well as a strengthened focus on targeted learning in programmed areas. Potential risky-play are eliminated, and natural green areas are replaced either with artificial material or garden-like plants. The analyses open up for a critical discussion on what these changes in the modern preschools might mean for children of today.

  • Methodological development through critical reflections on a study focusing on daily valuable encounters in early childhood settings
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood. - : SAGE Publications. - 1463-9491.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on the methodological experiences that emerged from a study investigating how teachers valued their daily encounters with children in early childhood education. Early childhood teachers often balance the demands of documentation with time spent with children, so have little time to reflect on their practice. Furthermore, participation in research projects tends to be both time-consuming and distracting from the practitioners’ perspective, without providing immediate opportunities for professional development. The purpose of this article is to elaborate on the use of a mixed-methods approach that combines a quantitative digital tool (an application) for collecting data with the use of short qualitative interviews in order to explore methodological aspects in educational research. The pros of this mixed-methods approach include flexibility, the instant overview of data, and the reflective potential offered to the participants, as well as the researchers. The teachers had the opportunity to ‘set the agenda’ when giving their own definitions of valuable encounters and then reflect on their experiences in their own words. This gave them a strong voice. The main risks of this method concern the dependence on technical devices and software. The authors argue that there is potential in the reflective methodology used in this study to bring research and practice closer in comprehensive knowledge creation. This methodology offers a respectful way to gather information from practice and simultaneously provide opportunities to change.

  • Places, spaces and encounters with nature–socio-material discourses in Swedish preschools
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Early Years Education. - : Routledge. - 0966-9760 .- 1469-8463.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates views and discourses on outdoor play in preschool teachers talks about their playgrounds and outdoor practices in Swedish preschools. Included were a strategic sample of teachers from newer, larger preschool facilities with more programmed outdoor space, and teachers from older, more traditional facilities containing more nature. Through interviews with 38 teachers at 21 preschools and a thematic analysis inspired by socio-material theory, we identified three main themes: The meanings and limits of free outdoor play, the view on nature and children’s encounters with nature, and dangers and risks in the playground. Within these themes, we show how the teachers’ views construct discourses related to the outdoor educational places and spaces that are available. Furthermore, changes in preschool curricula as well as in the playground material and design are active agents in constructing discourses on outdoor play, including risks and limitations, beyond teachers’ own beliefs on children’s needs.

  • The tension-free vaginal tape operation : Is the inexperienced surgeon a risk factor? Learning curve and Swedish quality reference
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0001-6349 .- 1600-0412. ; 100:3, s. 471-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: To reduce the risk of avoidable damage to the patient when training surgeons, one must predefine what standards to achieve, as well as supervise and monitor trainees' performance. The aim of this study is to establish a quality reference, to devise comprehensive tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) learning curves and to compare trainees' results to our quality reference.Material and methods: Using the Swedish National Quality Register for Gynecologic Surgery, we devised TVT learning curves for all Swedish TVT trainees from 2009 to 2017, covering their first 50 operations. These outcomes were compared with the results of Sweden's most experienced TVT surgeons for 14 quality variables. Results: In all, 163 trainees performed 2804 operations and 40 experienced surgeons performed 3482 operations. For our primary outcomes - perioperative bladder perforations and urinary continence after 1 year - as well as re-admission, re-operation and days to all daily living activities, there was no statistically significant difference between trainees and experienced surgeons at any time. For the first 10 trainee operations only, there were small differences in favor of the experienced surgeons: patient-reported minor complications after discharge (14% vs 18.4%, P = .002), 1-year patient-reported improvement (95.9% vs 91.8%, P < .000), and patient satisfaction (90.9% vs 86.2%, P = .002). For both trainee operations 1-10 and 11-50, compared with experienced surgeons, operation time (33.8 vs 22.2 min, P < .000; 28.3 vs 22.2 min, P < .000) and hospital stay time (0.16 vs 0.06 days, P < .001; 0.1 vs 0.06 days, P < .001) were longer, perioperative blood loss was higher (27.7 vs 24.4 mL, P = .001; 26.5 vs 24.4 mL, P = .004), and patient-reported catheterization within 8 weeks was higher (3.9% vs 1.8%, P < .000; 2.5% vs 1.8%, P = .001). One-year voiding difficulties for trainee patients (operations 1-10:14.2%, P = .260; operations 11-50:14.5%, P = .126) were comparable to the experienced surgeons (12.4%).Conclusions: There is a learning curve for several secondary outcomes but the small effect size makes it improbable that the difference has clinical significance. Our national Swedish results show that it is possible to train new TVT surgeons without exposing patients to noteworthy extra risk and achieve results which are equivalent to the most experienced Swedish surgeons.

  • Lessons Learned from a Workshop on Relationship Building
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 4th IEEE International Conference on Global Software Engineering. - 9780769537108 ; , s. 115-120
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Openness and trust are key elements to sustaining any successful client-supplier relationship. When the relationship is transitioning from being arms-length to evolving into a true partnership, it is critical to establish a shared understanding of not only the current state, but also of the expected future state. A workshop organized and facilitated by a neutral party, with the senior leadership of both organizations provides an ideal means for articulating implicit assumptions and surfacing hidden challenges such that an actionable vision can be created. Using a recent workshop held with both EuroTel and IndiaCo, the key elements of the workshop are discussed, along with the lessons learned. Moreover, this workshop provides further insight into the mechanics of the evolution and governance of outsourcing relationships.
