  • Rasbiologiskt språkbruk i statens rättsprocess mot sameby
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Dagens Nyheter. - 1101-2447.

  • Urban water management : Modelling, simulation and control of the activated sludge process
  • 2003
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the last few decades, wastewater treatment processes in urban water management have become more and more efficient and complex. Several factors such as urbanization, stricter legislations on effluent quality, economics, increased knowledge of the involved biological, chemical and physical processes as well as technical achievements have been important incentives for the development of more efficient procedures for wastewater treatment plants. Future requirements on more sustainable urban water systems, in combination with increasing wastewater loads, will most probably further increase the need for optimization and control of both existing and emerging wastewater treatment processes. In this thesis estimation, modelling and control strategies are developed in order to improve the efficiency of the activated sludge process. The first part of the thesis presents a JAVA based simulator of the activated sludge process. An overview of its features, with some emphasis on implemented control strategies, is given. In particular, a new control strategy for the internal recycling flow rate is described. A summary of experiences from using the simulator as a teaching and training tool is also given. The second part of the thesis includes a derivation of reduced order models for the activated sludge process. The resulting models, a time-varying linear state-space model for the anoxic part and a time-varying bilinear state-space model for the aerobic part, are intended to be used for control applications. In the third part, an adaptive control strategy for control of the nitrate level using an external carbon source is presented. The controller adapts and compensates for changes in the system dynamics since important system parameters are estimated adaptively and incorporated on-line in the control design. The estimated system parameters and model states also give guidance about the state of the process and the characteristics of the wastewater. Several simulation examples are used to illustrate the control law. Finally, a new suboptimal control law for the bilinear quadratic regulator problem with infinite final time is presented. The control strategy is evaluated in a simulation study, where special concern is devoted to controlling the activated sludge process, using the bilinear model developed in the second part of this thesis.

  • Environmentally induced morphological variation in the Barnacle Goose, Branta leucopsis
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Journal of Evolutionary Biology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1010-061X .- 1420-9101. ; 4:4, s. 619-636
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The environmental conditions to which juvenile barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) were exposed during growth were found to affect their body size at fledging as well as their final adult body size. Small juveniles showed compensatory growth from the time of fledging up to one year of age, but this did not fully compensate the differences in body size that were established before fledging. The variation in protein content in plants eaten during growth could probably explain the observed body size differences, sometimes of more than 10%, between different categories of adult geese. Our results imply that one cannot infer selection on morphological characters from differences between samples of adult birds from different localities or from different cohorts within a population, without first showing that environmental conditions during growth do not affect the development of the characters under study.

  • A Non-Asymptotic Approach to Local Modelling
  • 2003
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Local models and methods construct function estimates or predictions from observations in a local neighborhood of the point of interest. The bandwidth, i.e., how large the local neighborhood should be, is often determined based on asymptotic analysis. In this paper, an alternative, non-asymptotic approach that minimizes a uniform upper bound on the mean square error for a linear estimate is proposed. It is shown, for the scalar case, that the solution is obtained from a quadratic program, and that it maintains many of the key features of the asymptotic approaches. Moreover, examples show that the proposed approach in some cases is superior to an asymptotically based local linear estimator.

  • Understanding the Needs and Challenges of Occupant-centric Building Design among Stakeholders: A Review
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ZEMCH International Conference. - 2652-2926. ; , s. 348-354
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Designing high-performance buildings is a complex process that involves several stakeholders at different stages of design development. Design stakeholders need to work together to achieve design objectives and overcome the challenge that arises from inefficient collaboration and coordination. Among these challenges are occupant-related assumptions which are made throughout the design process, including schematic design, energy modelling, construction, and even operation. Accuracy of these assumptions is highly dependent on the design stakeholders' objectives and the time that they are engaged in the design process. Differences in occupant-related assumptions can lead to a considerable level of uncertainty, which probably leads to suboptimal design decisions. To this end, the current practice, including the challenges and the barriers, needs to be documented and understood in order to develop an improved occupant modelling approach during building design. Therefore, this paper highlights the current practices of communicating occupant-related assumptions in the building design process. In this paper, we also argue the need for in-depth consideration of communication among design stakeholders.

  • Life-History Theory, Past Human Populations and Climatic Perturbations
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Osteoarchaeology. - : Wiley. - 1047-482X. ; 21:4, s. 407-419
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A sensitivity and elasticity analysis is performed on historical life-tables, that of Swedish females from 1751-1755 and 1966-1970, i.e. during and after the Little Ice Age. Coupled with life-history theory, this approach supplies us with some ideas on how stature can be understood as a proxy for conditions during the intrauterine growth, important if we aspire to calibrate proposed climatic perturbations and their effect on past societies. Matrix population models represent a versatile tool that has been used extensively in conservation biology, ecology, primatology and evolutionary demography. As of yet, applications in bioarchaeology/human osteology have been restricted to population forecasting. The following paper introduces matrix population models and discusses their use in bioarchaeology. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
