  • Probing surface states of Cu/Ni thin films using x-ray absorption spectroscopy
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 63:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surface and interface properties of Cu thin films (1–4 monolayers) deposited on Ni(100) have been extracted by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and analyzed in combination with ab initio density-functional calculations. An unoccupied Cu surface state is identified in an x-ray absorption spectra and studied as a function of film thickness. Experimental data is supported by calculations of the layer-resolved density of states and the results from this combined theoretical-experimental effort show that the surface state is almost entirely located on the atomic layer closest to the vacuum. Our results also indicate strong hybridization between unoccupied states at the Cu/Ni interface boundary.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1089-5647 .- 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 105:10, s. 1917-1920
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intermolecular hydrogen-bonding in thick films of isonicotinic acid evaporated onto rutile TiO2(110) has been investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The rate of deposition is found to be a key factor in overcoming the kinetic barriers to extensive hydrogen-bond formation, which, when present, gives rise to large energy shifts between bulk and surface in both the N1s XPS and XAS. The origin of the surface core-level shift is attributed to the presence of non-hydrogen-bonded nitrogen atoms in the surface layer.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - 0039-6028 .- 1879-2758. ; 486:3, s. 157-166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intermolecular hydrogen bonding in thick films of pyridine carboxylic acids (isonicotinic; picolinic and bi-isonicotinic acid) evaporated onto rutile TiO2(1 1 0) has been investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. These molecules are shown to be strongly H-bonded in the condensed phase, and a surface core-level shift is observed due to the presence of non-H-bonded nitrogen atoms in the surface layer. Density functional theory calculations are used to relate the experimental data to the proposed bonding configurations based on the surface termination of the known equilibrium solid-state structure. A kinetic barrier, attributed to the high degree of molecular orientation required for the formation of extended H-bonding networks, has also been investigated.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The inner valence region of CO/Pd(100) p(2square-root2 x square-root2)R45-degrees has been studied by angular resolved photoemission at the Pd 4d Cooper minimum, and with resonant Auger spectroscopy at photon energies corresponding to the C 1s and O 1s x-ray absorption (XA) maxima of the unoccupied parts of the 2pi*-Pd 4d hybrid (2pi(un)). Previously unobserved inner valence states are revealed in the direct photoemission and are compared with resonant Auger results. The interpretation and assignment of the different spectral features to different main final state configurations are based on energy, symmetry and intensity arguments, as well as comparisons with previous results.

  • The effect of dosing strategies on the therapeutic efficacy of artesunate-amodiaquine for uncomplicated malaria : a meta-analysis of individual patient data
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: BMC Medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1741-7015. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Artesunate-amodiaquine (AS-AQ) is one of the most widely used artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) to treat uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Africa. We investigated the impact of different dosing strategies on the efficacy of this combination for the treatment of falciparum malaria. Methods: Individual patient data from AS-AQ clinical trials were pooled using the WorldWide Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN) standardised methodology. Risk factors for treatment failure were identified using a Cox regression model with shared frailty across study sites. Results: Forty-three studies representing 9,106 treatments from 1999-2012 were included in the analysis; 4,138 (45.4%) treatments were with a fixed dose combination with an AQ target dose of 30 mg/kg (FDC), 1,293 (14.2%) with a non-fixed dose combination with an AQ target dose of 25 mg/kg (loose NFDC-25), 2,418 (26.6%) with a non-fixed dose combination with an AQ target dose of 30 mg/kg (loose NFDC-30), and the remaining 1,257 (13.8%) with a co-blistered non-fixed dose combination with an AQ target dose of 30 mg/kg (co-blistered NFDC). The median dose of AQ administered was 32.1 mg/kg [IQR: 25.9-38.2], the highest dose being administered to patients treated with co-blistered NFDC (median = 35.3 mg/kg [IQR: 30.6-43.7]) and the lowest to those treated with loose NFDC-25 (median = 25.0 mg/kg [IQR: 22.7-25.0]). Patients treated with FDC received a median dose of 32.4 mg/kg [IQR: 27-39.0]. After adjusting for reinfections, the corrected antimalarial efficacy on day 28 after treatment was similar for co-blistered NFDC (97.9% [95% confidence interval (CI): 97.0-98.8%]) and FDC (98.1% [95% CI: 97.6%-98.5%]; P = 0.799), but significantly lower for the loose NFDC-25 (93.4% [95% CI: 91.9%-94.9%]), and loose NFDC-30 (95.0% [95% CI: 94.1%-95.9%]) (P < 0.001 for all comparisons). After controlling for age, AQ dose, baseline parasitemia and region; treatment with loose NFDC-25 was associated with a 3.5-fold greater risk of recrudescence by day 28 (adjusted hazard ratio, AHR = 3.51 [95% CI: 2.02-6.12], P < 0.001) compared to FDC, and treatment with loose NFDC-30 was associated with a higher risk of recrudescence at only three sites. Conclusions: There was substantial variation in the total dose of amodiaquine administered in different AS-AQ combination regimens. Fixed dose AS-AQ combinations ensure optimal dosing and provide higher antimalarial treatment efficacy than the loose individual tablets in all age categories.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of intensive care medicine. - : SAGE Publications. - 1525-1489 .- 0885-0666. ; 37:4, s. 480-490
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thrombosis and bleeding after implementation of an intermediate-dose prophylactic anticoagulation protocol in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): a multicenter screening study Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is common among critically ill patients with COVID-19. Information regarding VTE prevalence and bleeding complications after implementation of intermediate-dose prophylactic anticoagulation in such patients is, however, limited. Methods: We performed a prospective, observational study in 6 ICUs in 2 university-affiliated teaching hospitals in Sweden. After implementation of an intermediate-dose prophylactic anticoagulation protocol, we performed ultrasound screening for proximal lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and collected routine computed tomography pulmonary angiography exam results. Results: A total of 100 COVID-19 patients were included from June 21, 2020, through February 18, 2021. During a median follow-up of 120 (IQR, 89-134) days, we found VTE in 37 patients with the majority (78.4%) being diagnosed after ICU arrival. Overall, 20 patients had proximal lower-extremity DVT with 95% being detected on ultrasound screening; 22 patients had pulmonary vascular thrombosis; and 4 patients had venous thrombosis at other sites. A total of 6 patients had both proximal lower-extremity DVT and pulmonary vascular thrombosis. On univariate logistic regression analysis of 14 baseline characteristics, only pre-existing heart failure was associated with VTE (OR 4.67, 95% CI 1.13-19.34). Major and non-major bleeding occurred in 10 and 18 patients, respectively. Conclusions: In our cohort of ICU patients with COVID-19, we observed a high prevalence of VTE and bleeding complications after implementation of intermediate-dose anticoagulation. In approximately half of patients, VTE was identified on screening ultrasound.

  • Phase and molecular orientation in metal-free phthalocyanine films on conducting glass: Characterization of two deposition methods
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090. ; 493:1-2, s. 13-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • in this study, metal-free phthalocyanine has been deposited on a conducting glass surface by two methods: by spreading the molecular powder directly on the substrate in air and by vapor sublimation under ultra-high vacuum conditions (evaporation). The films have been characterized by means of core level X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy, X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and Ultra Violet and Visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis). Our results show that the two deposition methods produce molecular overlayers in different polymorphic phases; the UV-Vis measurements indicate that the film obtained by powder deposition is of x-phase type whereas sublimation leads to an a-polymorph structure. The XAS results show that in the powder deposited film the molecules are mainly oriented parallel to the surface. This is opposite to the case of the vapor deposited film, where the molecules mainly are oriented orthogonal to the surface.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents measurements of charged-hadron spectra obtained in pp, p+Pb, and Pb+Pb collisions at √s or √sNN = 5.02 TeV, and in Xe+Xe collisions at √sNN = 5.44 TeV. The data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC have total integrated luminosities of 25 pb−1, 28 nb−1, 0.50 nb−1, and 3 μb−1, respectively. The nuclear modification factors RpPb and RAA are obtained by comparing the spectra in heavy-ion and pp collisions in a wide range of charged-particle transverse momenta and pseudorapidity. The nuclear modification factor RpPb shows a moderate enhancement above unity with a maximum at pT ≈ 3 GeV; the enhancement is stronger in the Pb-going direction. The nuclear modification factors in both Pb+Pb and Xe+Xe collisions feature a significant, centrality-dependent suppression. They show a similar distinct pT-dependence with a local maximum at pT ≈ 2 GeV and a local minimum at pT ≈ 7 GeV. This dependence is more distinguishable in more central collisions. No significant |η|-dependence is found. A comprehensive comparison with several theoretical predictions is also provided. They typically describe RAA better in central collisions and in the pT range from about 10 to 100 GeV.

    • Experimental high-resolution core photoelectron C1s and O1s shake-up spectra of molybdenum hexacarbonyl, Mo(CO)(6), are reported and compared with results of semiempirical INDO/CI calculations. Several hitherto unobserved peaks are identified and assigned. It is found that an intra- and inter-group classification can be used to describe the transitions. The transitions of lowest energy have Mo-CO inter-group character. Dynamical effects on the line widths of the experimental shake-up peaks are discussed. A discussion of the relevance of experimental results obtained for the Mo(CO)(6)e for CO adsorption on metal surfaces is presented.
