  • Long-range angular correlations on the near and away side in p-Pb collisions at root S-NN=5.02 TeV
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 719:1-3, s. 29-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Angular correlations between charged trigger and associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV for transverse momentum ranges within 0.5 < P-T,P-assoc < P-T,P-trig < 4 GeV/c. The correlations are measured over two units of pseudorapidity and full azimuthal angle in different intervals of event multiplicity, and expressed as associated yield per trigger particle. Two long-range ridge-like structures, one on the near side and one on the away side, are observed when the per-trigger yield obtained in low-multiplicity events is subtracted from the one in high-multiplicity events. The excess on the near-side is qualitatively similar to that recently reported by the CMS Collaboration, while the excess on the away-side is reported for the first time. The two-ridge structure projected onto azimuthal angle is quantified with the second and third Fourier coefficients as well as by near-side and away-side yields and widths. The yields on the near side and on the away side are equal within the uncertainties for all studied event multiplicity and p(T) bins, and the widths show no significant evolution with event multiplicity or p(T). These findings suggest that the near-side ridge is accompanied by an essentially identical away-side ridge. (c) 2013 CERN. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Underlying Event measurements in pp collisions at root s=0.9 and 7 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479. ; :7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present measurements of Underlying Event observables in pp collisions at root s = 0 : 9 and 7 TeV. The analysis is performed as a function of the highest charged-particle transverse momentum p(T),L-T in the event. Different regions are defined with respect to the azimuthal direction of the leading (highest transverse momentum) track: Toward, Transverse and Away. The Toward and Away regions collect the fragmentation products of the hardest partonic interaction. The Transverse region is expected to be most sensitive to the Underlying Event activity. The study is performed with charged particles above three different p(T) thresholds: 0.15, 0.5 and 1.0 GeV/c. In the Transverse region we observe an increase in the multiplicity of a factor 2-3 between the lower and higher collision energies, depending on the track p(T) threshold considered. Data are compared to PYTHIA 6.4, PYTHIA 8.1 and PHOJET. On average, all models considered underestimate the multiplicity and summed p(T) in the Transverse region by about 10-30%.

  • Measurement of prompt J/psi and beauty hadron production cross sections at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479. ; :11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ALICE experiment at the LHC has studied J/psi production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV through its electron pair decay on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity L-int = 5.6 nb(-1). The fraction of J/psi from the decay of long-lived beauty hadrons was determined for J/psi candidates with transverse momentum p(t) > 1,3 GeV/c and rapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9. The cross section for prompt J/psi mesons, i.e. directly produced J/psi and prompt decays of heavier charmonium states such as the psi(2S) and chi(c) resonances, is sigma(prompt J/psi) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 8.3 +/- 0.8(stat.) +/- 1.1 (syst.)(-1.4)(+1.5) (syst. pol.) mu b. The cross section for the production of b-hadrons decaying to J/psi with p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c and vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9 is a sigma(J/psi <- hB) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 1.46 +/- 0.38 (stat.)(-0.32)(+0.26) (syst.) mu b. The results are compared to QCD model predictions. The shape of the p(t) and y distributions of b-quarks predicted by perturbative QCD model calculations are used to extrapolate the measured cross section to derive the b (b) over bar pair total cross section and d sigma/dy at mid-rapidity.

  • Petrogenetic significance of ocellar camptonite dykes in the Ditrau Alkaline Massif, Romania
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Lithos. - : Elsevier BV. - 0024-4937 .- 1872-6143. ; 200, s. 181-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Camptonite dykes intrude the rift-related Mesozoic igneous body of the Ditrau Alkaline Massif, Eastern Carpathians, Romania. We present and discuss mineral chemical data, major and trace elements, and the Nd isotopic compositions of the dykes in order to define their nature and origin. The dykes are classified as the clinopyroxene-bearing (camptonite-I) and clinopyroxene-free (camptonite-II) varieties. Camptonite-I consists of aluminian-ferroan diopside phenocrysts accompanied by kaersutite, subordinate Ti-rich annite, albite to oligoclase and abundant calcite-albite ocelli. Camptonite-II comprises K-rich hastingsite to magnesiohastingsite, Ti-rich annite, albite to andesine, abundant accessory titanite and apatite, and silicate ocelli filled mainly with plagioclase (An(4-34)). Age-corrected Nd-143/Nd-144 ratios vary from 0.51258 to 0.51269. The high epsilon(Nd) values of +4.0 to +6.1 which are consistent with intra-plate composition, together with light rare earth element (LREE), large ion lithophile element (LIE) and high field strength element (HFSE) enrichment in the camptonites is ascribed to the formation of small melt batches of a metasomatised sub-lithospheric mantle source. The presence of an asthenospheric 'high mu' ocean island basalt (HIMU-OIB)-type mantle component in the source region has also been revealed. A 1-4% degree of partial melting of an enriched garnet Iherzolite mantle source containing pargasitic amphibole followed by fractionation is inferred to have been involved in the generation of the camptonites. They are deduced to be parental melts to the Ditrau Alkaline Massif.

  • Intelligent image-based in situ single-cell isolation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 2041-1723. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quantifying heterogeneities within cell populations is important for many fields including cancer research and neurobiology; however, techniques to isolate individual cells are limited. Here, we describe a high-throughput, non-disruptive, and cost-effective isolation method that is capable of capturing individually targeted cells using widely available techniques. Using high-resolution microscopy, laser microcapture microscopy, image analysis, and machine learning, our technology enables scalable molecular genetic analysis of single cells, targetable by morphology or location within the sample.

  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4687 .- 0028-0836. ; 578:7793, s. 82-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cancer is driven by genetic change, and the advent of massively parallel sequencing has enabled systematic documentation of this variation at the whole-genome scale1–3. Here we report the integrative analysis of 2,658 whole-cancer genomes and their matching normal tissues across 38 tumour types from the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We describe the generation of the PCAWG resource, facilitated by international data sharing using compute clouds. On average, cancer genomes contained 4–5 driver mutations when combining coding and non-coding genomic elements; however, in around 5% of cases no drivers were identified, suggesting that cancer driver discovery is not yet complete. Chromothripsis, in which many clustered structural variants arise in a single catastrophic event, is frequently an early event in tumour evolution; in acral melanoma, for example, these events precede most somatic point mutations and affect several cancer-associated genes simultaneously. Cancers with abnormal telomere maintenance often originate from tissues with low replicative activity and show several mechanisms of preventing telomere attrition to critical levels. Common and rare germline variants affect patterns of somatic mutation, including point mutations, structural variants and somatic retrotransposition. A collection of papers from the PCAWG Consortium describes non-coding mutations that drive cancer beyond those in the TERT promoter4; identifies new signatures of mutational processes that cause base substitutions, small insertions and deletions and structural variation5,6; analyses timings and patterns of tumour evolution7; describes the diverse transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation on splicing, expression levels, fusion genes and promoter activity8,9; and evaluates a range of more-specialized features of cancer genomes8,10–18.

  • Real-time measurements of coagulation on bacterial cellulose and conventional vascular graft materials.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Acta biomaterialia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1878-7568 .- 1742-7061. ; 6:3, s. 1125-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The search for a functional, small diameter (<5mm) vascular graft has been ongoing for over 30 years, but yet there is no consistently reliable synthetic graft. The primary mechanisms of graft failure are intimal hyperplasia, poor blood flow and surface thrombogenicity. Bacterial cellulose (BC) became therefore a proposed new biosynthetic vascular graft material. Since conventional methods are not suited for coagulation measurements on BC, we have adapted the automated calibrated thrombin generation method for measurements of biomaterial-induced coagulation of BC as compared with clinically used graft materials i.e., expanded poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (ePTFE) and poly(ethyleneterephtalat) (PET). We have also visualized the coagulation propagation at the material surfaces. Thrombin generation experiments revealed dramatic differences between the materials tested. Both ePTFE and BC were found to generate longer lag times and ttpeak values than PET. Most importantly, BC was found to generate the lowest "peak", indicating a slower coagulation process at the surface. These results are also supported by the measurements of factor XIIa generation and analysis of surface coagulation times, which were detected in the following increasing order (mean + or - SD): PET (27 + or - 8 min)

  • "The roots" of selenium toxicity : A new concept
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Plant Signalling & Behavior. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1559-2316 .- 1559-2324. ; 11:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elevated levels of selenium (Se) cause toxicity in non-accumulator plant species. The primary reasons for toxic Se effect have been considered to be selenoprotein accumulation and oxidative stress. However, based on our recent paper in Plant Cell Reports and previous literature data we suggest that disturbances in the homeostasis of both reactive oxygen and nitrogen species result in selenium-induced nitro-oxidative stress, contributing to toxicity. The most characteristic symptom of Se exposure is the inhibited root elongation which is partly caused by hormonal disturbances. Our recent paper suggests the involvement of cytokinin in selenium stress sensing of the root systemAltogether, the aim of this Addendum is to present reactive nitrogen species and phytohormones as new players in plant selenium toxicity.
