  • Mapping incomplete relational data : networks in ecology & evolution
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We live in an interconnected world full of complex systems that cannot be understood simply by analyzing their components. From how genes regulate biological functions to the distribution of life on Earth, we need methods that can analyze systems as a whole.Networks are abstractions of complex systems, helping capture properties that emerge from patterns of interactions rather than from the individual parts. To understand the patterns of interactions in large networks, we need to simplify them by discovering their modular structure that often characterizes complex systems. A hierarchical modular structure functions as a map that lets us navigate relational data efficiently and helps us see the general patterns. But how reliable is the map if it is based on incomplete data? This thesis applies and builds upon the map equation, which is an information-theoretic method for detecting modular regularities in the flow patterns on networks. To robustly map incomplete data, we have developed three general approaches: (1) Adaptive resolution in both sampling of and dynamics on networks better fits the data. (2) Regularization avoids overfitting to random patterns. (3) Richer data can be included into the network for a more complete map. Methods that can include evolutionary relationships and handle incomplete data provide more powerful tools for mapping biodiversity in space and time.

  • Managing Sport for Public Health : Approaching Contemporary Problems with Traditional Solutions
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Social Inclusion. - Lisbon : Cogitatio. - 2183-2803. ; 3:3, s. 108-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the area of public health, civil society involvement in attaining government objectives on physical activity participation is often carried out by voluntary sport organizations (Agergaard & Michelsen la Cour, 2012; Österlind & Wright, 2014; Skille, 2009; Theeboom, Haudenhuyse, & De Knop, 2010). In Sweden, this responsibility has been given to the Swedish Sport Confederation (SSC), a voluntary and membership-based non-profit organization, granted government authority to govern Swedish sport towards government objectives (Bergsgard & Norberg, 2010; Bolling, 2005). Research has pointed to difficulties for sport organizations to shoulder such responsibilities due to the deeply rooted logic of competition in sport and organizational structures adapted for competitive sport (Skille, 2011; Stenling & Fahlén, 2009). This article focuses on how public health is being constructed, implemented and given meaning within the SSC. Drawing on a critical discourse approach (Fairclough & Fairclough, 2012) this study explores the SSC’s role and position in public health promotion by interviewing SSC representatives and National Sport Organizations’ (NSO) general managers. Results indicate how discourses on democracy, equality and physical activity are used to legitimize the SSC’s role in public health. Also, how these discourses are compromised in practice, posing challenges for organized sport in meeting objectives of public health.

  • Organizing physical activity for public health : the case of the Voluntary Sports Movement in Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Sport in the City – Mobility, Urbanity and Social Change. - Copenhagen : University of Copenhagen, Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sport 2016. - 9788791771644 ; , s. 83-83
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This abstract is based on an ongoing study in which data are collected during spring 2016 and preliminary results will be presented at the EASS conference in May 2016. The study aims at making a contribution to the research area of physical activity on prescription, in which knowledge about the role of activity organisers is called for (Kallings et al., 2008; Leijon, 2009). In heeding this call, present study puts focus on the Swedish Sports Confederation (SSC) and how it give meaning to, organises and arranges physical activities for people (patients) which are prescribed physical activity by health care providers. In doing so, this study will add to the existing literature on sport organisations' role in public health promotion (Michelini, 2015; Coalter, 2013; Geidne, Quennerstedt & Eriksson, 2012), and more specifically on the SSC’s potential as physical activity promoter and organiser of activities for people with prescription for physical activity. The study is theoretically based on Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 2003, 1992) and data is collected through interviews with leaders, in charge of prescribed physical activity, in the 21 Regional Sports Federations and in a strategic sample of the 71 National Sports Federations.

  • When the weak confront the strong : Justice, fairness and power in the Israel-PLO interim talks
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: International Negotiation: A Journal of Theory and Practice. - 1382-340X. ; 4:2, s. 327-367
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most international negotiations involve asymmetrical parties, and raise issues of justice and fairness at different stages. This article is an empirical analysis of the role played by ethical conceptions and stark power inequalities in the Israel-PLO interim talks from 1993 to 1997. It focuses on the negotiations over water resources and economic relations. Israel's superior bargaining strength ensured that the country's security interests and notions of fairness influenced the process substantially. However, the negotiations cannot be understood merely in terms of the distribution of power between the two sides. The costs of failing to reach an agreement meant that Israeli negotiators had to concede to certain Palestinian demands and conceptions of fairness. The serious charges of injustice and unfairness have emerged in the implementation phase, owing more to developments on the ground than dissatisfaction with the terms of the interim agreements per se.This case challenges two dominant approaches to justice and fairness in negotiation: the idea that parties define negotiated agreements as just irrespective of their power relations, and the notion that there can be no role for ethical considerations when the weak must confront the strong. It demonstrates moreover that conceptions of justice and fairness can serve as both external referents which guide the negotiations, and be subject to bargaining themselves.

  • The influence of substrate temperature and Al mobility on the microstructural evolution of magnetron sputtered ternary Ti-Al-N thin films
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 106:6, s. 064915-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ternary Ti-Al-N films were deposited onto Al2O3 (0001) substrates by reactive co‑sputtering from elemental Ti and Al targets and analyzed by in situ and ex situ x-ray scattering, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The deposition parameters were set to values that yield Ti:Al:N ratios of 2:1:1 and 4:1:3 at room temperature. 2TiAlN depositions at 675 °C result in epitaxial Ti2AlN growth with basal planes parallel to the substrate surface. Nominal 4TiAl3N depositions at 675 °C and above, however, yield TiN and Ti2AlN domains due to Al loss to the vacuum. Depositions at a lower temperature of 600 °C yield films with correct 4:1:3 stoichiometry, but Ti4AlN3 formation is supposedly prevented by insufficient adatom mobility. Instead, an incoherent Tin+1AlNn structure with random twinned stacking sequences n is obtained, that exhibits both basal plane orientations parallel as well as nearly perpendicular to the substrate interface. X‑ray photoemission spectroscopy shows that in contrast to stoichiometric nitrides the Al is metallically bonded and hence acts as twinning plane within the Tin+1AlNn stackings. Domains with perpendicular basal plane orientation overgrowth those with parallel ones in a competitive growth mode. The resulting morphology is a combination of smooth‑surfaced parallel basal plane orientation domains interrupted by repeated facetted hillock-like features with perpendicular basal plane orientation.

  • Is meta-synthesis turning rich descriptions into thin reductions? : A criticism of meta-aggregation as a form of qualitative synthesis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nursing Inquiry. - : Blackwell Publishing. - 1320-7881 .- 1440-1800. ; 26:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Meta-synthesis of qualitative research can be an important way to consolidate and grow nursing knowledge and theory. However, from recent readings of such works in the nursing literature, one can observe that there is increasing use of meta-synthesis being used as a way to simply aggregate qualitative research findings in a manner claimed to be similar to quantitative meta-research while also remaining compatible with the qualitative research tradition. The aim of this paper is to discuss whether this meta-aggregation form of research has a sound epistemological foundation and should be considered a viable form of meta-synthesis. The conclusion drawn is that meta-aggregation falls short of being a sound method and is not compatible with the qualitative research philosophy. It is also concluded that meta-aggregation should not be seen as a form of qualitative meta-synthesis. Meta-synthesis is best understood as a way to re-interpret, compare and translate disparate qualitative studies using different conceptual apparatus into a consolidated knowledge of fundamental importance to nursing care practitioners. To conclude, aggregating qualitative research tends to turn rich descriptions into thin abstractions that are of little use to nursing practice knowledge and does not advance nursing science.

  • A Complete Multisite Reaction Mechanism for Low-Temperature NH3-SCR over Cu-CHA
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ACS Catalysis. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2155-5435. ; 10:10, s. 5646-5656
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dynamic character of the active centers has made it difficult to unravel the reaction path for NH3-assisted selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides over Cu-CHA. Herein, we use density functional theory calculations to suggest a complete reaction mechanism for low-temperature NH3-SCR The reaction is found to proceed in a multisite fashion over ammonia-solvated Cu cations Cu(NH3)(2+) and Bronsted acid sites. The activation of oxygen and the formation of the key intermediates HONO and H2NNO occur on the Cu sites, whereas the Bronsted acid sites facilitate the decomposition of HONO and H2NNO to N-2 and H2O. The activation and reaction of NO is found to proceed via the formation of nitrosonium (NO+) or nitrite (NO2-) intermediates. These low-temperature mechanisms take the dynamic character of Cu sites into account where oxygen activation requires pairs of Cu(NH3)(2+) complexes, whereas HO-NO and H3N-NO coupling may occur on single complexes. The formation and separation of Cu pairs is assisted by NH3 solvation. The complete reaction mechanism is consistent with measured kinetic data and provides a solid basis for future improvements of the low-temperature NH3-SCR reaction.
