  • Not Speaking or Acting as Anti-Social Feminism and Unbecoming Woman : A Queer Reading of Silence in Agnes von Krusenstjerna’s Tony Trilogy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Barnboken. - : The Swedish Institute for Children's Books. - 0347-772X .- 2000-4389. ; 45, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to explore the queer possibilities of the silence in the depiction of the protagonist’s love life in Agnes von Krusenstjerna’s Tony trilogy (1922–1926). The silence in the trilogy is manifested through absence: the theme of “ingenting” (nothing), the protagonist not speaking or acting, and the aesthetic that is created by interruptions in the protagonist’s dialogue, inner monologue, and narration. The analysis focuses on three passages: a depiction of an encounter between Tony and one of her suitors, her relative Frank Maclean, in Tonys läroår (Tony’s Apprenticeship, 1924); the ending of the trilogy in Tonys sista läroår (Tony’s Last Apprenticeship, 1926); and an epilogue to the trilogy, which was never included in it but later published in the second, expanded edition of En dagdriverskas anteckningar (The Notes of a Flâneuse, 1934). They are contextualised with references to the trilogy as a whole and compared to Krusenstjerna’s previous novels Ninas dagbok (The Diary of Nina, 1917) and Helenas första kärlek (Helena’s First Love, 1918). The method is a close reading with instead of against the grain, focusing on queer aspects of depictions of heterosexuality. It draws on theory belonging to the anti-social turn of queer studies and queer temporality studies. My conclusion is that Tony not speaking or acting can be read as anti-social feminism, with Tony as an anti-social feminist subject. Her queer life schedule can be interpreted as unbecoming woman. The “nothing,” and implicitly the creativity, that her passivity leads to accomplishes the opposite of patriarchal and chrononormative structures. The narrative and its ending are queer in the sense that they refuse to cohere and to fulfil demands for a happy, emancipatory ending.

  • Diabetic osteopathy : a study in the rat
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present study on non-obese Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats with type-2 diabetes and neuropathy was an attempt to describe and define pertinent features of diabetic osteopathy. Altogether, the study included 33 GK rats aged 12 and 20 months, and 36 age-matched Wistar rats as controls. All underwent test of glucose tolerance and nerve (sciatic) conduction velocity (NCV) showing that the diabetic rats had significantly higher blood glucose levels and lower NCV confirming the presence of diabetes and neuropathy. Skeletal features: Radiologic analysis of bone entailed X-ray, Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) and peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (pQCT). In diabetic rats, the length of humerus and height of vertebrae was reduced by 8%. The long bones exhibited endosteal erosion of the diaphyses up to 18% and periosteal expansion up to 8%. The vertebrae and metaphyses of long bones showed a decrease up to 24% in areal bone mineral density (BMD), whereas no decrease was seen in the diaphyses. Cross-sectional measurements by pQCT showed a decrease in volumetric BMD ranging from 33 to 62%, which exclusively pertained to trabecular bone (vertebrae, metaphyses), whereas volumetric BMD of the cortical bone of diaphyses was only marginally affected. The results indicate that juxta-articular bone in diabetes is substantially weaker, whereas diaphyseal cortical bone may be even stronger. Over all, the observations suggest that the diabetic skeleton is characterized by regional changes, which cannot be explained by systemic factors like calcium regulating hormones. Local bone turn-over is regulated by complex mechanisms involving cytokines, prostaglandins, growth factors and, also neuropeptides. Further analysis focused on the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system and neuronal mediators in bone. IGF system: Immunoassays of IGF-I were done on serum, ankle samples and cortical preparations. In addition, the inhibitory IGF-I binding proteins, IGFBP-1 and -4 were analysed in serum. In diabetic rats, serum IGF-I was reduced by 18%, while IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-4 were increased by 89 and 20%, respectively. This complies with the lower BMD in the diabetic rats. In cortical bone, IGF-I was reduced by 38%, whereas no change was seen in ankles. The loss of IGF-I in cortical bone represents a novel finding. Given the cortical expansion observed in diabetic rats, the opposite was expected. Conceivably, loss of IGF-I results in endosteal erosion, which is compensated by periosteal expansion. Neuropeptides: The analyses focused on two sensory mediators, i.e. substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene- related peptide (CGRP), and one autonomic, i.e. neuropeptide Y (NPY). Immunohistochemistry was applied to ankles and tibial diaphyses, whereas radioimmunoassay (RIA) was used for separate preparations of periosteum, cortex and bone marrow from femur and tibia, whole ankles, dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and lumbar spinal cord. The morphological analysis showed SP, CGRP and NPY positive nerve fibers in bone and joints, which mostly were blood vessel related, although free terminals were also seen. In addition, NPY-positive hematopoietic cells were observed in the bone marrow. RIA revealed a significant decrease of CGRP, albeit not of SP, in DRG (-26%) and spinal cord (-29%) in the diabetic rats. As for bone, only NPY was significantly reduced, most evidently in bone marrow (-66%), but also in cortical bone (-36%) and ankles (-29%). Given the bone anabolic effects of CGRP and NPY, loss of these neuropeptides may prove, at least partly, to underlie the trabecular osteopenia and endocortical erosion observed in diabetic rats. Conclusion: The skeleton of diabetic rats with type-2 diabetes and neuropathy is characterized by regional changes of size, form, mineral content and density and concomitantly with regional abnormalities of the IGF- system and neuropeptides suggesting that also local factors beyond systemic play an important role in the development of diabetic osteopathy.

  • Human resources and the response to HIV in Vietnam : policies and health workers' perspectives
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: An effective response to HIV requires sound national policies, a strong and sustainable health system with a motivated and well-trained health workforce. Aim and objectives: To analyse development of HIV-related policy and describe health workers’ perception and experiences on the HIV response in Vietnam. This thesis has four objectives: i) To analyse development of HIV-related policy in regards to policy content, policy-making process, actors and obstacles to policy implementation; ii) To describe health workers’ perceptions and experiences about HIV work and explore factors that influence their job satisfaction; iii) to explore HIV-related stigma impacts upon health workers; and iv) To describe health workers’ knowledge about HIV. Method: Nine policy documents on HIV were analysed and 17 key informant interviews were conducted in Ha Noi and Quang Ninh (Study I). Seven focus group discussions and 15 semi-structured interviews with health workers, purposively selected from national and provincial organisations responsible for HIV response in five provinces (Study II). Fourteen semi-structured interviews with health workers, purposively selected from hospitals and detention centres for drug users and sex workers in Hanoi (Study III). Interviews with structured questionnaires and self-administered questionnaires on HIV knowledge were carried out with 610 health workers in three provinces in Vietnam (Study IV). Results: Vietnam’s HIV policy has evolved from punitive control measures to a more rights-based approach, encompassing harm reduction and payment of health insurance for medical costs of people living with HIV (PLHIV) (Paper I). HIV work is perceived by Vietnamese health workers as having both positive and negative aspects. Factors related to job satisfaction included training opportunities, social recognition, and meaningful tasks. Factors related to job dissatisfaction included unsatisfactory compensation, lack of positive feedback from supervisors, work-related stress, fear of infection, and stigma because of association with PLHIV (Paper II). Stigma experienced by health workers may be organised around several themes i) Little social prestige associated with HIV work; ii) Fear expressed by family members; iii) Feelings of being devalued in the healthcare field; and iv) Work-related stress and burnout (Paper III). Health workers’ knowledge about HIV epidemiology, prevention and treatment appeared to be adequate. Knowledge about stigma and discrimination, palliative and nutrition care remained modest. The multivariable linear regression analysis showed that health workers, who do not support isolation and separation of PLHIV and who have a positive attitude to PLHIV, have better knowledge about stigma and discrimination (Paper IV). Conclusion: Vietnam’s HIV-related policy has converged towards internationally recognised approaches. Policies of harm reduction and health insurance for HIV patients’ medical costs are now the norm. Stigma is still a major barrier to HIV response. Efforts are needed to change the public image of HIV work, scale up stigma reduction, enhance stress management and improve workplace safety, thereby making health workers feel that their work is both valued and safe.

  • Silicon intercalation into the graphene-SiC interface
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 85:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work we use low-energy electron microscopy, x-ray photoemission electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to study how the excess Si at the graphene-vacuum interface reorders itself at high temperatures. We show that silicon deposited at room temperature onto multilayer graphene films grown on the SiC(000 (1) over bar) rapidly diffuses to the graphene-SiC interface when heated to temperatures above 1020 degrees C. In a sequence of depositions, we have been able to intercalate similar to 6 ML of Si into the graphene-SiC interface.

  • The proliferation of anti-dumping and poor governance in emerging economies: case studies of China and South Africa
  • 2009
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Through examination of the alleged rationale of the anti-dumping (AD) instrument, this paper argues that it has little to do with fairness or with level playing fields. AD trade protection enjoys broad political support merely because its convoluted technical complexities prevent all but a few insiders and experts from understanding the reality that underlies the rhetoric, thus enabling inefficient but well-organised domestic producers to safely utilise the instrument to protect themselves from foreign competition, at times in collusion with foreign exporters and with the national AD authorities as a broker. While the best option for AD reform, i.e., complete removal, is not practically available, this paper proposes improving AD’s procedural institutions by enhancing the quality of public governance in the formulation of AD decisions by national authorities. It further examines the AD practices and laws of China and South Africa, arguing that poor governance in emerging economies contributes to their prolific use of AD, usually disproportionate to their small share of world imports. These economies already maintain higher tariff barriers than industrial countries, so that without effective steps to ensure better governance to restrain the arbitrary and proliferating use of AD, they may lose out significantly on the gains from the trade liberalisation for which they have been striving for decades. • c-Myb Enhances Breast Cancer Invasion and Metastasis through the Wnt/beta-Catenin/Axin2 Pathway
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Cancer Research. - 0008-5472 .- 1538-7445. ; 76:11, s. 3364-3375
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The molecular underpinnings of aggressive breast cancers remain mainly obscure. Here we demonstrate that activation of the transcription factor c-Myb is required for the prometastatic character of basal breast cancers. An analysis of breast cancer patients led us to identify c-Myb as an activator of Wnt/beta-catenin signaling. c-Myb interacted with the intracellular Wnt effector beta-catenin and coactivated the Wnt/beta-catenin target genes Cyclin D1 and Axin2. Moreover, c-Myb controlled metastasis in an Axin2-dependent manner. Expression microarray analyses revealed a positive association between Axin2 and c-Myb, a target of the proinflammatory cytokine IL1 beta that was found to be required for IL1 beta-induced breast cancer cell invasion. Overall, our results identified c-Myb as a promoter of breast cancer invasion and metastasis through its ability to activate Wnt/beta-catenin/Axin2 signaling. (C) 2016 AACR.
