Mixing Grease with Water

- The purpose of this paper is to convey a simple and effective method to mix water with grease and verify the homogeneity of the mixture using Karl-Fischer (KF) titration as the analysis tool. This is required to better develop a future water in grease sensor for on-line condition monitoring. This paper will also attempt to investigate how well KF titration functions as a tool for measuring water content in grease. Additional investigations include how the water content varies with time in grease samples open to atmosphere at different temperature. This research verifies a simple grease mixing method and investigates the water transport in water contaminated grease samples.

- My thesis addresses the antagonism between the mystery of life and the destructive pursuit of power which forms a central theme in the works of Per Olof Sundman (1922–1992). The purpose is to show that Sundman uses the theme of the encounter/non-encounter and the destructive leader to examine the conditions for allowing a deeper experience of reality and the destructive exercise of power. I analyse these themes using concepts borrowed from literary studies (Atle Kittang, Paul Ricoeur, Bertil Romberg, Staffan Björck, Gérard Genette), the philosophy of religion (Martin Buber, Göran Bergstrand) and psychoanalysis (Ludvig Igra, Otto Kernberg, Erich Fromm, Julia Kristeva). My study highlights the problems associated with the destructive exercise of power, which is the overriding theme of Sundman's work. I explore the theme of the encounter by using the concept pair I-You/I-It. With the aid of this concept pair, I throw light on the aspect of depth in our existence by describing the human encounter. In my analysis on the theme of power, I point out the personal qualities inherent in the destructive leader. I also explore the link between the destructive leader's inner conflict of narcissism and repressed weakness – a conflict projected to the outside world – and the emergence of violence. In order to reveal this inner process, I unearth on a latent level the theme of the destructive leader/stranger in Sundman's work. This enables me to single out the mechanism responsible for the emergence of destructivity in the human psyche, while showing the close link between this pattern of narcissism and projected weakness and a distorted view of reality. Sundman contrasts this world of power with an integrative attitude to life. In his novel The Expedition, Sundman depicts life in the other world as being a state of human coexistence in which no one is seen to be a stranger. This idea of unity is reinforced by the choice of name for the first-person narrator of the other world. In this novel, the conditions enabling the flourishing of universalism as an attitude to life are also those that give expression in the I-You encounter to the experience of a deeper aspect to our existence.

- We have developed a new fiber-optic system that combines diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and laser Doppler Flowmetry (LDF) for a multi-modal assessment of the microcirculation. Quantitative data is achieved with an inverse Monte Carlo algorithm based on an individually adaptive skin model. The output parameters are calculated from the model and given in absolute units: hemoglobin oxygen saturation (%), red blood cell (RBC) tissue fraction (%), and the speed resolved RBC perfusion separated into three speed regions; 0–1 mm/s, 1–10 mm/s and above 10 mm/s (% mm/s). The aim was to explore microcirculatory parameters using the new optical method, integrating DRS and LDF in a joint skin model, during local heating of the dorsal foot and venous and arterial occlusion of the forearm in 23 healthy subjects (age 20–28 years). There were differences in the three speed regions in regard to blood flow changes due to local heating, where perfusion for high speeds increased the most. There was also a high correlation between changes in oxygenation and changes in perfusion for higher speeds. Oxygen saturation at baseline was 44% on foot, increasing to 83% at plateau after heating. The larger increase in perfusion for higher speeds than for lower speeds together with the oxygenation increase during thermal provocation, shows a local thermoregulatory blood flow in presumably arteriolar dermal vessels. In conclusion, there are improved possibilities to assess microcirculation using integrated DRS and LDF in a joint skin model by enabling both oxygenation and speed resolved blood flow assessment simultaneously and in the same skin site. Output parameters in absolute units may also yield new insights about the microcirculatory system.

- According to standard philosophical analyses of the ontology of texts, texts are abstract objects. However, that analysis has the paradoxical consequence that texts cannot be read: one cannot read something that lacks material existence. The essay resolves the paradox by introducing a distinction between the ordinary conception of a text-the supposed object of the philosophical analysis of the concept of a text-and the philosophical conception of a text, the end-product of that analysis. It is demonstrated by means of examples that a text as ordinarily conceived is at once physical and immaterial (and so can certainly be read, because of its physical side), and at once one and many, while the philosopher, uninterested in the actual, obviously illogical character of the ordinary conception of a text, turns the text into one abstract object by fiat-an object which cannot, of course, be read. It is argued that the ordinary concept of a text is handy in practical contexts precisely because it ignores troublesome distinctions, while the philosophical concept of a text serves no genuine purpose, since the theoretical understanding of verbal communication requires a partly different intellectual framework

Punktgittertolkning av brandområdet i Västmanland : redovisning av uppdrag från Skogsstyrelsen

- Efter branden i Västmanland i augusti 2014 uppdrog Skogsstyrelsen åt SLU att utföra en punktgittertolkning för att ta fram statistik över den brandskadade skogen. Arbetet har utförts vid institutionen för skoglig resurshushållning vid SLU i Umeå under oktober månad 2014. Sammantaget, så har 2062 provytor med 10 m radie och 300 m mellanrum tolkats i flygbilder från strax före och efter branden. Arbetet har utförts i fotogrammetrisk arbetsstation. Denna rapport redovisar använda metoder samt en första sammanställning av statistik. Från den levererade databasen kan sedan ytterligare analyser göras. Databasen lämpar sig även för framtida uppföljning samt kombination med andra datakällor. Resultaten enligt denna undersökning visar bland annat att ca 13 100 ha berördes av branden, varav 9576 ha bedömdes som produktiv skogsmark. Av den produktiva skogsmarken var marken brandskadad på 98 % av ytan. Skadorna i trädkronorna fördelade sig enligt följande: 4 % av arealen hade inga tolkade skador i trädkronorna; för 23 % av arealen bedömdes mindre än hälften av trädkronornas barr eller löv vara döda; för 52 % av arealen bedömdes mer än hälften av trädkronornas barr/löv vara döda men fortfarande ha delar av kronan kvar. Resterande 25 % av skogsmarksarealen omfattades av kronbrand (viss del grenar kan finnas kvar men inga barr/löv). Virkesförrådet i de två kraftigaste skadeklasserna (> 50 % av kronan skadad, eller kronbrand) uppskattades till ca 917 400 m3sk, medan virkesförrådet i områden med högst 50 % kronskador omfattade ca 344 100 m3sk. Den talldominerade skogen är mest skadad och den lövdominerade skogen och blandskogarna är mindre skadad. Resultaten i denna rapport bygger helt på mätning och bedömning i flygbilder och ingen efterföljande kontrollinventering har gjorts. Av tidsskäl har heller inga referensytor innan bildtolkningen varit möjliga att få fram. Det finns därför risk att det kan förekomma systematiska fel, t.ex. i uppskattningen av virkesförråden. Dessa uppgifter bör därför användas med viss försiktighet. Eventuell kontrollinventering kan bara utföras i den buffertzon utanför brandområdet som också inventerats. Det har även gjorts en kartering av yttergränsen för det område som bedömts som brandpåverkat på uppdrag från Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap (MSB). Denna gräns bygger på både bildtolkning och fältbesök. Skogsstyrelsen beslutade att bara punkter inom denna gräns ska ingå i beräkningarna
