  • Evaluating an ideation method in a real-life context : A field test from the railway sector
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ASME 2016 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. - New York : ASME Press. - 9780791850190
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A great number of ideation methods are available to assist the engineer in the conceptual phase of product development. Previous research on idea generation suggests that, in order to understand how ideation can be successful in reality, the context must be taken into account. Therefore, evaluating promising ideation methods in the intended use setting should be an important complement to other research studies in the field of engineering design. In the present study, an ideation method which had previously been developed by the present authors in close collaboration with industry, a government agency, and academia was evaluated in a typical use setting. Testing the method in a use setting led to unexpected events and to new insights into the method. During the most ideation-intensive stage of the method, one of the groups in the use setting generated suggestions at a rate similar to that of the small representative group in which the development of the method had taken place, whereas the other three groups in the use setting had a lower suggestion generation rate. The findings indicated that the participants' views on the method correlated with those of the group which had developed the method.

  • Room of silence : an explorative investigation of design students’ redesign of an arena for reflection and existential meaning-making
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Mortality. - United Kingdom : Informa UK Limited. - 1357-6275 .- 1469-9885. ; 21:2, s. 130-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores design students’ proposals for a redesign of the interior of a room of silence at the SUS hospital in Malmö. Reflection and existential meaning-making are discussed in relation to the material culture of design, and more specifically in relation to four different themes found among the students’ proposals: nature as common symbolic framework and salutary force; lighting creating a visual and spatial ambience for retreat; interactive objects allowing ritualised activities; and the presence and absence of religious symbols. In this paper, we argue that architecture and design more profoundly could support people with varying existential viewpoints when it comes to providing religiously and culturally shared public spaces for dealing with existentially crucial moments. We also argue for an interdisciplinary research approach to healing environments, where existential meaning-making is included in the overall discussion of the design of health care architecture.

  • Aesthetic regulation of objectionable representations. : A semiotic approach to memorials and religious architectural space.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Global Semiotics : Bridging Different Civilizations - Bridging Different Civilizations. - 9787563037438
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Whenever a material object is selected to represent a physically absent, but emotionally present referent, such as a religious figure or a deceased relative, we have a complex representation situation that involves what we could tentatively label “transgressive cognitive acts”. A transgressive cognitive act is here meant to involve a part that is experienced as present, and as having an effect, but not evidenced from a rationalist or scientific perspective on existence. Sometimes, the complexity of this type of representation is such that argumentation beside the theological, e.g. aesthetic, comes to stand as vicarious to theological or existential opinions about the matter. The semiotics of such vicarious representation have to consider a “leaking” communication model where one part in the trinity - of the sender, the receiver or the referent - escape a coherent or evidenced definition (God can be all three, depending on type of communication). The fact that empirically non-existing referents have been recognized and theorized in semiotics (Eco; Sonesson; and others) does not explain why certain cases of absent semiotic agents, linked to religious belief, or to sense of presence in grief of a deceased person, may give rise to such extreme degree of emotion or sense of existence.Departing from a narrated episode written by J M Coetzee, about the controversy brought up by a crucifix, turning into a quarrel about aesthetic preferences, this paper discusses a series of designed or spontaneously created spatial representations of physically absent, but indirectly and emotionally present referents, as they appear in memorials, cemeteries and funeral chapels. In public acts of memorialisation, the physical objects that represent the deceased – like gravestones or memorial objects placed at sites representing the dead – are often strictly regulated, differently in different cultures. When for instance they appear at unexpected places in the urban environment, or with unfamiliar looks, memorials and their material culture can become highly controversial or be regarded as objectionable. These materialisations with a relation to religion, or existential belief, may give rise to arguments where the aesthetic aspect is the last chance to state a principle order in the cultural scheme in which they are debated. Such arguments are actualised in the current debate about post-secular societies, where it is for instance stated (Habermas) that both religious and secular mentalities must be open to a complementary learning if we are to balance shared citizenship and cultural difference in the post-secular society. It is an objective of this paper to show that the recognition of a semiotics that involves the paradoxical presence of emotionally strong, but fundamentally absent parts in communication can contribute to the aesthetics of physically present, but existentially debated objects, as well as to the discussion about the confronting as well as conjoining elements of regulation of these issues in society.

  • Designing a Memorial Place: Continuing care, Passage landscapes and Memories of the Future
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Mortality. - 1357-6275. ; 16:1, s. 54-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design and selection of a memorial stone and gravesite that represent the deceased is a central issue for people bereaved by traffic accidents. This was revealed in an interview survey of recent Swedish roadside memorials and other memorial places. This text will look at this design and selection as expressions of continuing care for the deceased and as a way to find comfort for the bereaved. Materiality, representation and presence will be discussed as crucial parts of the link between the living and the dead. Communicative, spatial and physical values are important also in the professional’s design of common public memorial places. Of specific interest for this text are two design practice based terms, memory object and passage landscape, which may be used by landscape architects when designing memorial places, such as cemeteries and public monuments. Throughout this text, we will hold memorial places like these as capable of bridging the gap between the space of life and the space of death as well as supporting the regeneration of present memories and the construction of future ones.

  • The significance of anabolic androgenic steroids in a Swedish prison population
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Comprehensive Psychiatry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0010-440X .- 1532-8384. ; 51:3, s. 312-318
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) has been associated with adverse psychiatric effect, violent behavior, and criminality. The aim of this study was to further investigate the motives for and consequences of AAS use, with focus on violent and antisocial behavior. Fifty-nine prisoners were interviewed on their use of AAS, and their history was mapped with Addiction Severity Index interviews. Of these prisoners, 56% admitted previous use of AAS, of whom 24% declared to have committed violent crimes in connection with use of AAS. However, the only significant difference between users and nonusers with regard to criminal history when measured with the Addiction Severity Index was that the AAS users more often stated that they had been prosecuted for crimes labeled as “other crimes,” which did not include violent crimes. The reported side effects of AAS corresponded well to those previously reported. These results indicate that use of AAS is common among Swedish prisoners and that the motives and consequences of such use are similar to what has been observed in other AAS-using populations. Furthermore, this study supports earlier notions that misuse of AAS might cause violent behavior, but only in certain individuals and mainly in combination with other substances.

  • Representing the Absent: A Study of Memorialisation and Its Material Culture in Spontaneous and Official Memorial Places in Contemporary Sweden
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The general aim of this thesis was to study how memorial places and objects serve as links and meeting points between the bereaved and their conceptions and memories of the departed. This has been examined in several different ways, from various viewpoints, and placed in different contexts and periods in time. The general result is that there are several and complementary ways through which material links appear as parts of memorialisation processes. Places can serve as links and meeting points between the bereaved and their conceptions and memories of the departed by associating to the deceased’s social or private life, such as a favourite restaurant or the home. They can also function by associating to the deceased as dead, such as the burial site in the cemetery, where the dead body is laid to rest, or the site of an unexpected or violent fatality, reminding the bereaved of the fatal accident and the loss of the deceased’s life. In the same way, material objects reminiscent of the deceased as alive, such as a cherished teddy bear or a piece of jewellery, and objects found at the fatal accident site, such as splinters of glass from the crashed car and pebbles or leaves collected there, can serve as material tokens with a special connection to the deceased and function as links between the bereaved and their conceptions and memories of the departed. The thesis contributes to a discussion of the narrative and communicative possibilities of different memorial places and objects as well as their various functions as ritual and symbolic tools in the process of grief and remembrance. Of special interest is how the very physical appearance and placing of a spontaneous memorial can be seen to materialise and locate feelings of grief and loss. For some people, repeated visits to the site of a fatality can be a way of confronting, controlling and taming terrible thoughts of the accident. For others, the sight of a roadside memorial, for example, placed in close proximity to their everyday lives, can lead to unwanted thoughts of death and expose the fragility of life. A roadside memorial on the site of a fatal traffic accident can be perceived by the bereaved and by passing motorists as a manifestation of the dangerous condition of that particular roadway or the threat of careless driving, and thereby also serve as a powerful statement to the road commission and to drivers. In the same way, a spontaneous memorial on the site of a murder can be seen as a material and visual protest against the increasing violence in society. Another important issue is how memorial places, whether the gravesite, a spontaneous memorial or an official monument, serve as sites where we can physically encounter thoughts of the past and the departed as well as continue to care for the deceased by leaving gifts, fresh flowers and lighted candles. Memorial places and objects bring the material world of the here and now into juxtaposition with the transient world of memories of the past. By bridging to the past to support the generation of present memories, memorial places and objects also aid the construction of memories in the future. Recognising the profound role this material culture plays in people’s memories and grieving can be an important asset to the design community. This thesis shows the importance of acknowledging and respecting the need the bereaved may have to see the site of a tragedy, to leave flowers or candles there and to return repeatedly. These and other insights generated by the thesis could be further developed for use in planning and designing gravesites, memorial places and monuments. It calls attention to the phenomenon of spontaneous and informal activities in a city, and illuminates their importance and power – insights that could be used in the planning and design of the urban environment more generally.
