  • The significance of anabolic androgenic steroids in a Swedish prison population
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Comprehensive Psychiatry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0010-440X .- 1532-8384. ; 51:3, s. 312-318
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) has been associated with adverse psychiatric effect, violent behavior, and criminality. The aim of this study was to further investigate the motives for and consequences of AAS use, with focus on violent and antisocial behavior. Fifty-nine prisoners were interviewed on their use of AAS, and their history was mapped with Addiction Severity Index interviews. Of these prisoners, 56% admitted previous use of AAS, of whom 24% declared to have committed violent crimes in connection with use of AAS. However, the only significant difference between users and nonusers with regard to criminal history when measured with the Addiction Severity Index was that the AAS users more often stated that they had been prosecuted for crimes labeled as “other crimes,” which did not include violent crimes. The reported side effects of AAS corresponded well to those previously reported. These results indicate that use of AAS is common among Swedish prisoners and that the motives and consequences of such use are similar to what has been observed in other AAS-using populations. Furthermore, this study supports earlier notions that misuse of AAS might cause violent behavior, but only in certain individuals and mainly in combination with other substances.

  • Representing the Absent: A Study of Memorialisation and Its Material Culture in Spontaneous and Official Memorial Places in Contemporary Sweden
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The general aim of this thesis was to study how memorial places and objects serve as links and meeting points between the bereaved and their conceptions and memories of the departed. This has been examined in several different ways, from various viewpoints, and placed in different contexts and periods in time. The general result is that there are several and complementary ways through which material links appear as parts of memorialisation processes. Places can serve as links and meeting points between the bereaved and their conceptions and memories of the departed by associating to the deceased’s social or private life, such as a favourite restaurant or the home. They can also function by associating to the deceased as dead, such as the burial site in the cemetery, where the dead body is laid to rest, or the site of an unexpected or violent fatality, reminding the bereaved of the fatal accident and the loss of the deceased’s life. In the same way, material objects reminiscent of the deceased as alive, such as a cherished teddy bear or a piece of jewellery, and objects found at the fatal accident site, such as splinters of glass from the crashed car and pebbles or leaves collected there, can serve as material tokens with a special connection to the deceased and function as links between the bereaved and their conceptions and memories of the departed. The thesis contributes to a discussion of the narrative and communicative possibilities of different memorial places and objects as well as their various functions as ritual and symbolic tools in the process of grief and remembrance. Of special interest is how the very physical appearance and placing of a spontaneous memorial can be seen to materialise and locate feelings of grief and loss. For some people, repeated visits to the site of a fatality can be a way of confronting, controlling and taming terrible thoughts of the accident. For others, the sight of a roadside memorial, for example, placed in close proximity to their everyday lives, can lead to unwanted thoughts of death and expose the fragility of life. A roadside memorial on the site of a fatal traffic accident can be perceived by the bereaved and by passing motorists as a manifestation of the dangerous condition of that particular roadway or the threat of careless driving, and thereby also serve as a powerful statement to the road commission and to drivers. In the same way, a spontaneous memorial on the site of a murder can be seen as a material and visual protest against the increasing violence in society. Another important issue is how memorial places, whether the gravesite, a spontaneous memorial or an official monument, serve as sites where we can physically encounter thoughts of the past and the departed as well as continue to care for the deceased by leaving gifts, fresh flowers and lighted candles. Memorial places and objects bring the material world of the here and now into juxtaposition with the transient world of memories of the past. By bridging to the past to support the generation of present memories, memorial places and objects also aid the construction of memories in the future. Recognising the profound role this material culture plays in people’s memories and grieving can be an important asset to the design community. This thesis shows the importance of acknowledging and respecting the need the bereaved may have to see the site of a tragedy, to leave flowers or candles there and to return repeatedly. These and other insights generated by the thesis could be further developed for use in planning and designing gravesites, memorial places and monuments. It calls attention to the phenomenon of spontaneous and informal activities in a city, and illuminates their importance and power – insights that could be used in the planning and design of the urban environment more generally.

  • Substance abusers' motives for using anabolic androgenic steroids
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Drug And Alcohol Dependence. - : Elsevier BV. - 0376-8716 .- 1879-0046. ; 111:1-2, s. 170-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) has been associated with the use of illegal drugs. Earlier observations suggested that users of illegal drugs may use AAS for reasons other than increasing muscle strength or size. The aim of the present study was to investigate the motives for AAS use among outpatients at a substance abuse center in Stockholm, Sweden. METHODS: All male patients under the age of 50 were asked whether they had used AAS during a 2-month period. An AAS survey was administered to those who reported AAS experiences in the admittance interview. RESULTS: Twenty of the 175 respondents (11%) reported using AAS. The most frequently reported motives were related to anabolic effects (i.e., for a good-looking body, to become stronger, or to perform better in sports). However, some users reported other motives; for example, to conceal concomitant drug use, to alleviate insecurity or low self-esteem, to become brave, or in preparation of committing a crime. Furthermore, many respondents reported side effects that were associated with AAS; most notably, irritability and depression/suicidal ideation. CONCLUSION: Some users of illicit drugs also use AAS for reasons other than the anabolic properties of these compounds. Therefore, considering that AAS may cause or contribute to diverse morbidity, it is important to ask users of illicit drugs about AAS use, even when obvious external signs of AAS use are lacking.

  • The Production of a Memorial Place: Materialising Expressions of Grief
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Deathscapes: Spaces for Death, Dying, Mourning and Remembrance. - : Routledge. - 9780754679752 ; , s. 141-159
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter will look at why, how and in what way a spontaneous memorial may develop: from an immediate act to a more planned place of grief and remembrance (Clark and Franzmann 2006, Nieminen Kristofersson 2006, Klaasens, Groote and Huigen 2009). Of special importance for this investigation are the noticeable differences in attitudes to and growths of roadside memorials revealed by data gleaned from interviews that I conducted with informants in 2005 on the subject of recent Swedish roadside memorialisation. As well as the various viewpoints on the production of memorials on public ground found in two applications requesting to erect memorials on sites of individual deaths in the city of Malmö, Sweden, sent to and responded by the Streets and Parks Department in Malmö. In order to illustrate these perspectives this text will start with presenting some examples from the 2005 interview survey. Thereafter a presentation of the two requests, and the statements issued to them, will be made. I will then move on to discuss the given examples in the light of the anthropologist Jean-Pierre Warnier’s idea of ‘the three media of symbolization’ (Warnier 2001), dealing with the internalisation of a difficult experience in the past, and the philosopher and psychoanalyst Julia Kristeva’s theory of abjection (Kristeva 1982), working on the exclusion and rejection of that which is threatening. In this discussion, I will forefront the material world as an important media for expressing, communicating, experiencing and understanding loss and bereavement (Aynsley, Breward and Kwint 1999, Hallam and Hockey 2001, Valentine 2008: 114–23).

  • Swedish Offerkast and Recent Roadside Memorials
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Folklore. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0015-587X .- 1469-8315. ; 120:1, s. 75-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The erection of roadside memorials in Sweden is commonly considered a novel practice. However, it bears certain similarities with earlier traditions, especially, the so-called offerkast, a pile of sticks or stones thrown on the site of a death on the road.

  • The Altar of the Dead: a Temporary Space for Memory and Meaning in the Contemporary Urban Landscape
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nature, Space and the Sacred:transdiciplinary perspectives. - 9780754666868
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The week following Halloween in 2006, a cultural event called ‘The altar of the dead’ was held in an urban park in the centre of the Swedish city of Malmö. Encouraging people to contemplate a deceased loved one by leaving gifts, by reciting poems, or simply by reminiscing at a confessionless altar placed in the public park, this event invited an inquiry into the relation between nature, space, and the sacred paying heed to people’s diverse cultures, religious beliefs and practices.
