  • Evaluation of softening behaviour of timber light-frame walls subjected to in-plane forces using simple FE models
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Engineering structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0141-0296 .- 1873-7323. ; 81, s. 464-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present investigation focuses on evaluating the entire load displacement relationship, especially the softening part, of light-frame wall segments subjected to in-plane monotonic forces when the load-slip curves of the individual sheathing-to-framing fasteners are considered. Different sheathing-to-framing joint characteristics, including unloading behaviour, and stud-to-rail joint characteristics are incorporated in the analyses. Two loading cases are investigated: Horizontal loading resulting in uplift of the leading stud and diagonal loading representing a fully anchored wall. Two common types of finite element (FE) models for the sheathing-to-framing joints are used for the analyses: A single spring model and a spring pair model, where the joint characteristics valid for the timber properties perpendicular and parallel to the grain are used. The maximum capacity of the wall segments is somewhat overestimated when using the spring pair model compared to that of the single spring model. The softening parts of the load displacement curves are significantly affected, regardless of whether the perpendicular or parallel characteristics of the joints are used. The results from FE simulations using models with perpendicular and parallel characteristics are compared with full scale test results for walls with a single segment loaded horizontally and diagonally. The behaviour of the wall segments subjected to horizontal loading is dominated by fastener displacements perpendicular to the bottom rail. Hence, FE models including perpendicular characteristics should be used. For diagonal loading the behaviour of the wall segments is dominated by displacements parallel to the framing members, and FE models including parallel characteristics should therefore be used. The analyses were extended to multiple segment walls resulting in the same type of behaviour as single segment walls. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Influence of contact stress between sheets on strength and stiffness of timber frame shear walls
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 11th World Conference on Timber Engineering 2010 (WCTE 2010). - : Curran Associates, Inc.. - 9781622761753 ; , s. 2283-2288
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sheathed light-frame timber shear walls are often used to stabilize timber buildings, protecting them from the effects of wind loads in particular. The analysis models used for such walls often neglects the contact forces between the sheets. In partially anchored shear walls, especially, these contact forces can become significant. In the present study, which only comprises walls without openings, the effect of these contact forces is evaluated for different loading and geometrical conditions using the finite element method. The analyses show that the internal force distribution in the wall is significantly affected by taking the contact forces into account. However, with respect to the load-carrying capacity of the wall, these contact forces have only a slight effect. The main reason for this fact is that the contact forces between the sheets can be replaced by forces transferred via the sheathing-to-framing joints along the top rail and to some extent also by forces transferred via the sheathing-to-framing joints along the upper parts of the vertical studs joining the different sheets.

  • Effect of columnar disorder on the superconducting transition of a type-II superconductor in zero applied magnetic field
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 70:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the effect of random columnar disorder on the superconducting phase transition of a type-II superconductor in zero applied magnetic field using numerical simulations of three dimensional XY and vortex loop models. We consider both an unscreened model, in which the bare magnetic penetration length is approximated as infinite, and a strongly screened model, in which the magnetic penetration length is of order the vortex core radius. We consider both equilibrium and dynamic critical exponents. We show that, as in the disorder free case, the equilibrium transitions of the unscreened and strongly screened models lie in the same universality class, however scaling is now anisotropic. We find for the correlation length exponent nu=1.2+/-0.1, and for the anisotropy exponent zeta=1.3+/-0.1. We find different dynamic critical exponents for the unscreened and strongly screened models.

  • Strövtåg i komponerandets landskap : tre studier av komponerande med hjälp av dator och musikteknologi
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of the thesis is to make visible and to give an insight in composing processes leading up to new music compositions. The overarching purpose was to study how men and women composed music with the aid of computers and music technology, and how they talked about their composing. The thesis is divided into three parts. The empirical study is based on a distance project, where folk high school students were given the task to compose music in four given styles; chopin, blues, bach and jazz style. Furthermore, the first and the last tasks were free. The compositions were sent as a MIDI file to supervisors at the School of Music in Piteå for comments. Participants were ten music students, evenly divided among two folk high schools, and five teachers in music theory at a school of music. Data consists of introduction inquiry, recorded music pieces as well as interviews. The result shows that the students talk about three main conditions, which are important for the composing work: previous knowledge (music, music technology, computer), creativity and gender. Regarding concepts connected with composing the language tends to change with composing genre and tools. The participants talk of both positive and negative effects of using computer and music technology as a tool for composing. One further result was that "given" tasks in many cases opened up for greater creativity in comparison with the free tasks. Finally, gender differences were proved by the fact that the women showd less self-confidence and were more critical about their composing than the men. The women also followed task instructions more carefully. This work concludes with a discussion about what the introduction of new technique might involve for music pedagogy as well as what kind of knowledge might be relevant for the future.
