  • S-domain assembly of the signal recognition particle.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Curr Opin Struct Biol. - 0959-440X. ; 13:1, s. 64-70
  • Forskningsöversikt (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The signal recognition particle (SRP) is a phylogenetically conserved ribonucleoprotein that associates with ribosomes to mediate the targeting of membrane and secretory proteins to biological membranes. In higher eukaryotes, SRP biogenesis involves the sequential binding of SRP19 and SRP54 proteins to the S domain of 7S RNA. The recently determined crystal structures of SRP19 in complex with the S domain, and that of the ternary complex of SRP19, the S domain and the M domain of SRP54, provide insight into the molecular basis of S-domain assembly and SRP function.

  • Image Enhancement And Reduction Of Radiation Dose For Panoramic Dental X-Ray Imaging
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Swedish Medical Engineering Conference 2013, Medicinteknikdagarna 2013.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • 1.  Background Reducing the X-ray dose too much produces images with low quality; Noisy, blurred, faded, under exposed. The approach used in this work aims at enhancing image quality by using advanced  automatic image processing algorithms.2.  Purpose To minimize X-ray dose exposure during panoramic dental X-ray imaging, in addition to automatically enhancing the acquired X-ray images to achieve high quality images that can be viewed using ordinary monitors.3.  Method An automatic, adaptive image enhancement algorithm was developed and implemented on multi-core CPU as well as GPU to achieve real time performance.4.  ResultsThe method was tested on panoramic dental X-ray images acquired with varying radiation dose. The results were promising and indicated the possibility of obtaining diagnostically usable images using a reduced dose by 50%. A group of ten dentists and specialists evaluated the resulted images. Figure (1) shows a comparison between an enhanced panoramic dental X-ray acquired with reduced dose by 50% and an original (unprocessed) panoramic dental X-ray acquired with a standard dose.5.  Discussion and conclusionsThis study shows the possibility to achieve a number of goals that can lead to better patient safety and better healthcare in general, such as:Minimized X-ray dose to the patient, which can lead to reduced risk of physical damage (e.g. cancer) and psycological consequences (e.g. stress).Better image quality which can lead to better, faster and more accurate and confident diagnostic. The resulted enhanced images can be automatically produced without any noticeable waiting time and viewed using any ordinary monitor (LCD/LED TV or computer screens) without any need for any expensive/exclusive high-dynamic-range displays.

  • Roles of piRNAs in microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR) induced reproductive toxicity in testis on male offspring
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Food and Chemical Toxicology. - : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 0278-6915 .- 1873-6351. ; 105, s. 177-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, we evaluated the toxic effects on the testis of the male offspring of MC-LR exposure during fetal and lactational periods. Pregnant females were distributed into two experimental groups: control group and MC-LR group which were exposed to 0 and 10 mu g/L of MC-LR, respectively, through drinking water separately during fetal and lactational periods. At the age of 30 days after birth, the male offspring were euthanized. The body weight, testis index, and histomorphology change were observed and the global changes of piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA) expression were evaluated. The results revealed that MC-LR was found in the testis of male offspring, body weight and testis index decreased significantly, and testicular tissue structure was damaged in the MC-LR group. In addition, the exposure to MCLR resulted in an altered piRNA expression profile and an increase of the cell apoptosis and a decrease of the cell proliferation in the testis of the male offspring. It was reasonable to speculate that the toxic effects on reproductive system of the male offspring in MC-LR group might be mediated by piRNAs through the regulation of the target genes. As far as we are aware, this is the first report showing that MC-LR could play a role in disorder of proliferative and cell apoptosis in the testis of the male offspring by the maternal transmission effect of toxicity. • Cerebrospinal fluid tau, Aβ, and sTREM2 in Former National Football League Players: Modeling the relationship between repetitive head impacts, microglial activation, and neurodegeneration.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Alzheimer's & dementia : the journal of the Alzheimer's Association. - 1552-5279. ; 14:9, s. 1159-1170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein analysis may facilitate detection and elucidate mechanisms of neurological consequences from repetitive head impacts (RHI), such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy. We examined CSF concentrations of total tau (t-tau), phosphorylated tau, and amyloid β1-42 and their association with RHI in former National Football League (NFL) players. The role of microglial activation (using sTREM2) was examined as a pathogenic mechanism of chronic traumatic encephalopathy.Sixty-eight former NFL players and 21 controls underwent lumbar puncture to quantify t-tau, p-tau181, amyloid β1-42, and sTREM2 in the CSF using immunoassays. The cumulative head impact index estimated RHI.No between-group differences for CSF analytes emerged. In the former NFL players, the cumulative head impact index predicted higher t-tau concentrations (P = .041), and higher sTREM2 levels were associated with higher t-tau concentrations (P = .009).In this sample of former NFL players, greater RHI and increased microglial activation were associated with higher CSF t-tau concentrations.
