  • Detection of Gamma-Ray Emission from the Eta-Carinae Region
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL LETTERS. - 2041-8205. ; 698:2, s. L142-L146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results of extensive observations by the gamma-ray AGILE satellite of the Galactic region hosting the Carina nebula and the remarkable colliding wind binary Eta Carinae (eta Car) during the period 2007 July-2009 January. We detect a gamma-ray source (1AGL J1043-5931) consistent with the position of eta Car. If 1AGL J1043-5931 is associated with the Car system, our data provide the long sought first detection above 100 MeV of a colliding wind binary. The average gamma-ray flux above 100 MeV and integrated over the preperiastron period 2007 July-2008 October is F(gamma) = (37 +/- 5) x 10(-8) ph cm(-2) s(-1) corresponding to an average gamma-ray luminosity of L(gamma) = 3.4 x 10(34) erg s(-1) for a distance of 2.3 kpc. We also report a two-day gamma-ray flaring episode of 1AGL J1043-5931 on 2008 October 11-13 possibly related to a transient acceleration and radiation episode of the strongly variable shock in the system.

  • Alcohol intake and breast cancer risk: the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Cancer Causes and Control. - : Springer. - 1573-7225 .- 0957-5243. ; 18:4, s. 361-373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective Most epidemiologic studies have suggested an increased risk of breast cancer with increasing alcohol intake. Using data from 274,688 women participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study (EPIC), we investigated the relation between alcohol intake and the risk of breast cancer. Methods Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) based on Cox proportional hazard models were calculated using reported intake of alcohol, recent (at baseline) and lifetime exposure. We adjusted for known risk factors and stratified according to study center as well as potentially modifying host factors. Results During 6.4 years of follow up, 4,285 invasive cases of breast cancer within the age group 35-75 years were identified. For all countries together the IRR per 10 g/day higher recent alcohol intake (continuous) was 1.03 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-1.05). When adjusted, no association was seen between lifetime alcohol intake and risk of breast cancer. No difference in risk was shown between users and non-users of HRT, and there was no significant interaction between alcohol intake and BMI, HRT or dietary folate. Conclusion This large European study supports previous findings that recent alcohol intake increases the risk of breast cancer.

  • EANM guideline for the preparation of an Investigational Medicinal Product Dossier (IMPD)
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. - : Springer Verlag (Germany). - 1619-7070 .- 1619-7089. ; 41:11, s. 2175-2185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The preparation of an Investigational Medicinal Product Dossier (IMPD) for a radiopharmaceutical to be used in a clinical trial is a challenging proposition for radiopharmaceutical scientists working in small-scale radiopharmacies. In addition to the vast quantity of information to be assembled, the structure of a standard IMPD is not well suited to the special characteristics of radiopharmaceuticals. This guideline aims to take radiopharmaceutical scientists through the practicalities of preparing an IMPD, in particular giving advice where the standard format is not suitable. Examples of generic IMPDs for three classes of radiopharmaceuticals are given: a small molecule, a kit-based diagnostic test and a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical.

  • Introducing a cloud based architecture for the distributed analysis of Real-Time Ethernet traffic
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728148922 ; , s. 235-240
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of industrial communication protocols based on Real-Time Ethernet (RTE) standards is completely replacing traditional industrial fieldbuses. As usual, when a technology becomes mature, the need of efficient diagnostic and maintenance tools quickly raises. Very often, following the paradigm of Industry 4.0, the most effective diagnostic systems are today based on distributed, cloud-centric, architectures and artificial intelligence. However, the distributed analysis of RTE systems is challenging, considering the plurality of protocols and the stringent cost constrains which are common in industry. In this paper, a new architecture for the distributed analysis of RTE networks is proposed, leveraging on distributed probes that send traffic samples to Matlab cloud for remote analysis. The paper also proposes a software conversion tool to adapt general PCAP files captured by popular sniffers (e.g. Wireshark) into MAT file for easier Matlab elaboration. Last, a test bench for characterization (in terms of transfer delays) of the first part of the chain for RTE traffic sampling is described. The results show that in less than 10 seconds it is possible to transfer chunks of RTE traffic data (captured on industrial networks with hundreds of real-time devices) directly to the cloud and to have them converted in Matlab format. © 2020 IEEE.

  • Dietary glycaemic index and glycaemic load in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1476-5640 .- 0954-3007. ; 63:4s, s. 188-205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To describe dietary glycaemic index (GI) and glycaemic load (GL) values in the population participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study according to food groups, nutrients and lifestyle characteristics. Methods: Single 24-h dietary recalls (24-HDRs) from 33 566 subjects were used to calculate dietary GI and GL, and an ad hoc database was created as the main reference source. Mean GI and GL intakes were adjusted for age, total energy intake, height and weight, and were weighted by season and day of recall. Results: GI was the lowest in Spain and Germany, and highest in the Netherlands, United Kingdom and Denmark for both genders. In men, GL was the lowest in Spain and Germany and highest in Italy, whereas in women, it was the lowest in Spain and Greece and highest in the UK health-conscious cohort. Bread was the largest contributor to GL in all centres (15-45%), but it also showed the largest inter-individual variation. GL, but not GI, tended to be lower in the highest body mass index category in both genders. GI was positively correlated with starch and intakes of bread and potatoes, whereas it was correlated negatively with intakes of sugar, fruit and dairy products. GL was positively correlated with all carbohydrate components and intakes of cereals, whereas it was negatively correlated with fat and alcohol and with intakes of wine, with large variations across countries. Conclusions: GI means varied modestly across countries and genders, whereas GL means varied more, but it may possibly act as a surrogate of carbohydrate intake.
