  • Corporate ESG performance and systemic risk: a network perspective
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Annals of Operations Research. - : SPRINGER. - 0254-5330 .- 1572-9338.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate whether corporates' environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance affects their systemic risk. Based on 284 publicly-listed Chinese firms over the period 2011-2020, we construct a tail risk spillover network for measuring their connectedness and systemic risk and use a panel regression model to examine the influence of corporate ESG performance on systemic risk. Network connectedness is an essential channel for risk contagion, and the energy, industry, and finance sectors occupy a significant position in the system. The ESG performance has a significant negative impact on systemic risk, both in terms of systemic vulnerability and systemic risk contribution, i.e., the ESG performance can dampen the two-way transmission of shocks between individual firms and the system. The results are robust to proxy measures of systemic vulnerability and systemic risk contribution, as well as to winsorize all variables and lag the core explanatory variables. Our study provides a new angle from the ESG performance for regulating systemic risk.

  • Interconnected multilayer networks: Quantifying connectedness among global stock and foreign exchange markets
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Review of Financial Analysis. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 1057-5219 .- 1873-8079. ; 86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a novel interconnected multilayer network framework based on variance decomposition and block aggregation technique, which can be further served as a tool of linking and measuring cross-market and within-market contagion. We apply it to quantifying connectedness among global stock and foreign exchange (forex) markets, and demonstrate that measuring volatility spillovers of both stock and forex markets simultaneously could support a more comprehensive view for financial risk contagion. We find that (i) stock markets transmit the larger spillovers to forex markets, (ii) the French stock market is the largest risk transmitter in multilayer networks, while some Asian stock markets and most forex markets are net risk receivers, and (iii) interconnected multilayer networks could signal the financial instability during the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 crisis. Our work provides a new perspective and method for studying the cross-market risk contagion.

  • Portfolio optimization based on network centralities: Which centrality is better for asset selection during global crises?
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. - : KEAI PUBLISHING LTD. - 2096-2320. ; 9:3, s. 348-375
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We construct correlation-based networks linking 86 assets (stock indices, bond indices, foreign exchange rates, commodity futures, and cryptocurrencies) and analyze the impact of asset selection on portfolio optimization using different centrality measures (including degree, eigenvector, eccentricity, betweenness, PageRank, and hybrid centralities). In times of a global crisis, peripheral assets located in cross-market networks are more suitable for investment. By comparing portfolio performance based on different centrality measures, we find that (i) hybrid, eigenvector, and PageRank centralities can best improve portfolio performance; (ii) degree centrality is suitable for larger portfolios; and (iii) eccentricity and betweenness centralities are unsuitable for network optimization portfolios. In response, we explain them based on the construction principle of centrality measures. Additionally, our optimal portfolios suggest that investors pay more attention to the role of emerging countries, which are less exposed to external shocks and whose financial markets are more likely to remain stable. • Photovoltaic Blend Microstructure for High Efficiency Post-Fullerene Solar Cells. To Tilt or Not To Tilt?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 141:34, s. 13410-13420
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Achieving efficient polymer solar cells (PSCs) requires a structurally optimal donor-acceptor heterojunction morphology. Here we report the combined experimental and theoretical characterization of a benzodithiophene-benzo-thiadiazole donor polymer series (PBTZF4-R; R = alkyl substituent) blended with the non-fullerene acceptor ITIC-Th and analyze the effects of substituent dimensions on blend morphology, charge transport, carrier dynamics, and PSC metrics. Varying substituent dimensions has a pronounced effect on the blend morphology with a direct link between domain purity, to some extent domain dimensions, and charge generation and collection. The polymer with the smallest alkyl substituent yields the highest PSC power conversion efficiency (PCE, 11%), reflecting relatively small, high-purity domains and possibly benefiting from "matched" donor polymer-small molecule acceptor orientations. The distinctive morphologies arising from the substituents are investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations which reveal that substituent dimensions dictate a well-defined set of polymer conformations, in turn driving chain aggregation and, ultimately, the various film morphologies and mixing with acceptor small molecules. A straightforward energetic parameter explains the experimental polymer domain morphological trends, hence PCE, and suggests strategies for substituent selection to optimize PSC materials morphologies.

  • Spirometric phenotypes from early childhood to young adulthood : a Chronic Airway Disease Early Stratification study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ERJ Open Research. - : ERS Publications. - 2312-0541. ; 7:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The prevalences of obstructive and restrictive spirometric phenotypes, and their relation to early-life risk factors from childhood to young adulthood remain poorly understood. The aim was to explore these phenotypes and associations with well-known respiratory risk factors across ages and populations in European cohorts. Methods: We studied 49334 participants from 14 population-based cohorts in different age groups (⩽10, >10–15, >15–20, >20–25 years, and overall, 5–25 years). The obstructive phenotype was defined as forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) z-score less than the lower limit of normal (LLN), whereas the restrictive phenotype was defined as FEV1/FVC z-score ⩾LLN, and FVC z-score Results: The prevalence of obstructive and restrictive phenotypes varied from 3.2–10.9% and 1.8–7.7%, respectively, without clear age trends. A diagnosis of asthma (adjusted odds ratio (aOR=2.55, 95% CI 2.14–3.04), preterm birth (aOR=1.84, 1.27–2.66), maternal smoking during pregnancy (aOR=1.16, 95% CI 1.01–1.35) and family history of asthma (aOR=1.44, 95% CI 1.25–1.66) were associated with a higher prevalence of obstructive, but not restrictive, phenotype across ages (5–25 years). A higher current body mass index (BMI was more often observed in those with the obstructive phenotype but less in those with the restrictive phenotype (aOR=1.05, 95% CI 1.03–1.06 and aOR=0.81, 95% CI 0.78–0.85, per kg·m−2 increase in BMI, respectively). Current smoking was associated with the obstructive phenotype in participants older than 10 years (aOR=1.24, 95% CI 1.05–1.46).Conclusion: Obstructive and restrictive phenotypes were found to be relatively prevalent during childhood, which supports the early origins concept. Several well-known respiratory risk factors were associated with the obstructive phenotype, whereas only low BMI was associated with the restrictive phenotype, suggesting different underlying pathobiology of these two phenotypes.

  • US2Mask : Image-to-mask generation learning via a conditional GAN for cardiac ultrasound image segmentation
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Computers in Biology and Medicine. - Oxford : Elsevier. - 0010-4825 .- 1879-0534. ; 172, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cardiac ultrasound (US) image segmentation is vital for evaluating clinical indices, but it often demands a large dataset and expert annotations, resulting in high costs for deep learning algorithms. To address this, our study presents a framework utilizing artificial intelligence generation technology to produce multi-class RGB masks for cardiac US image segmentation. The proposed approach directly performs semantic segmentation of the heart's main structures in US images from various scanning modes. Additionally, we introduce a novel learning approach based on conditional generative adversarial networks (CGAN) for cardiac US image segmentation, incorporating a conditional input and paired RGB masks. Experimental results from three cardiac US image datasets with diverse scan modes demonstrate that our approach outperforms several state-of-the-art models, showcasing improvements in five commonly used segmentation metrics, with lower noise sensitivity. • Thermodynamic reassessment of the Au-Te system
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 407:1-2, s. 106-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Au-Te binary system has been thermodynamically reassessed using the CALPHALD method. The excess Gibbs energy of the liquid phase was formulated with the Redlich-Kister expression and the AuTe2 intermetallic phase was treated as a stoichiometric compound. A set of self-consistent thermodynamic parameters for each phase has been obtained. Good agreement is reached between the calculated and experimental results. Additionally, the standard formation enthalpy and enthalpy of fusion of AuTe2 intermetallic phase have also been calculated.

  • Thermodynamic and diffusion kinetic studies of the Fe-Co system
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Calphad. - : Elsevier. - 0364-5916 .- 1873-2984. ; 58, s. 82-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phase equilibria, thermodynamic properties and diffusion mobilities of the Fe-Co system were carefully assessed through the CALPHAD methods. As an indispensable tool, the first-principles calculations were carried out to study the magnetic moments and the enthalpies of mixing of the bcc_A2, bcc_B2, fcc_A1 and hcp_A3 phases as well as the point defect types of the bcc_B2 phase. In order to verify the heat capacities reported in the literature, new measurements were conducted in a high-temperature calorimetric apparatus using the three-dimensional calorimetric method. Because of the revision of the thermodynamic parameters in the present work, the diffusion mobilities for the fcc_Al phase were reassessed. The diffusion mobilities for the bcc_A2 phase were established for the first time based on the experimental diffusion coefficients. For the low temperature bcc_B2 phase, the diffusion couple experiments conducted in the present work show that the diffusion process is sluggish and the interdiffusion coefficients are difficult to determine. Therefore the tracer diffusivities of Co and Fe in the Fe-Co alloys were used to assess the diffusion mobilities for the bcc_B2 phase, while the composition-distance profile of one diffusion couple was served as a validation of its diffusion mobilities.

  • Telomere-to-telomere and haplotype-resolved genome assembly of the Chinese cork oak (Quercus variabilis)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Plant Science. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-462X. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Quercus variabilis, a deciduous broadleaved tree species, holds significant ecological and economical value. While a chromosome-level genome for this species has been made available, it remains riddled with unanchored sequences and gaps. In this study, we present a nearly complete comprehensive telomere-to-telomere (T2T) and haplotype-resolved reference genome for Q. variabilis. This was achieved through the integration of ONT ultra-long reads, PacBio HiFi long reads, and Hi-C data. The resultant two haplotype genomes measure 789 Mb and 768 Mb in length, with a contig N50 of 65 Mb and 56 Mb, and were anchored to 12 allelic chromosomes. Within this T2T haplotype-resolved assembly, we predicted 36,830 and 36,370 protein-coding genes, with 95.9% and 96.0% functional annotation for each haplotype genome. The availability of the T2T and haplotype-resolved reference genome lays a solid foundation, not only for illustrating genome structure and functional genomics studies but also to inform and facilitate genetic breeding and improvement of cultivated Quercus species.
