  • Nanometric Moire Stripes on the Surface of Bi2Se3 Topological Insulator
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1936-086X .- 1936-0851. ; 16:9, s. 13860-13868
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mismatch between adjacent atomic layers in low-dimensional materials, generating moire patterns, has recently emerged as a suitable method to tune electronic properties by inducing strong electron correlations and generating novel phenomena. Beyond graphene, van der Waals structures such as three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) appear as ideal candidates for the study of these phenomena due to the weak coupling between layers. Here we discover and investigate the origin of 1D moire stripes on the surface of Bi2Se3 TI thin films and nanobelts. Scanning tunneling microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveal a unidirectional strained top layer, in the range 14-25%, with respect to the relaxed bulk structure, which cannot be ascribed to the mismatch with the substrate lattice but rather to strain induced by a specific growth mechanism. The 1D stripes are characterized by a spatial modulation of the local density of states, which is strongly enhanced compared to the bulk system. Density functional theory calculations confirm the experimental findings, showing that the TI surface Dirac cone is preserved in the 1D moire stripes, as expected from the topology, though with a heavily renormalized Fermi velocity that also changes between the top and valley of the stripes. The strongly enhanced density of surface states in the TI 1D moire superstructure can be instrumental in promoting strong correlations in the topological surface states, which can be responsible for surface magnetism and topological superconductivity.

  • Stoichiometric Bi(2)Se(3)topological insulator ultra-thin films obtained through a new fabrication process for optoelectronic applications
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2040-3372 .- 2040-3364. ; 12:23, s. 12405-12415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new fabrication process is developed for growing Bi(2)Se(3)topological insulators in the form of nanowires/nanobelts and ultra-thin films. It consists of two consecutive procedures: first Bi(2)Se(3)nanowires/nanobelts are deposited by standard catalyst free vapour-solid deposition on different substrates positioned inside a quartz tube. Then, the Bi2Se3, stuck on the inner surface of the quartz tube, is re-evaporated and deposited in the form of ultra-thin films on new substrates at a temperature below 100 degrees C, which is of relevance for flexible electronic applications. The method is new, quick, very inexpensive, easy to control and allows obtaining films with different thickness down to one quintuple layer (QL) during the same procedure. The composition and the crystal structure of both the nanowires/nanobelts and the thin films are analysed by different optical, electronic and structural techniques. For the films, scanning tunnelling spectroscopy shows that the Fermi level is positioned in the middle of the energy bandgap as a consequence of the achieved correct stoichiometry. Ultra-thin films, with thickness in the range 1-10 QLs deposited on n-doped Si substrates, show good rectifying properties suitable for their use as photodetectors in the ultra violet-visible-near infrared wavelength range.

  • Fast tuning of superconducting microwave cavities
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proc. 2nd International Workshop on Solid-State Quantum Computing. - 9780735406056 ; , s. 12-21
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photons are fundamental excitations of electromagnetic fields and can be captured in cavities. For a given cavity with a certain size, the fundamental mode has a fixed frequency f which gives the photons a specific "color". The cavity also has a typical lifetime tau, which results in a finite linewidth delta f. If the size of the cavity is changed fast compared to tau, and so that the frequency change Delta f >> delta f, then it is possible to change the "color" of the captured photons. Here we demonstrate superconducting microwave cavities, with tunable effective lengths. The tuning is obtained by varying a Josephson inductance at one end of the cavity. We show data on four different samples and demonstrate tuning by several hundred linewidths in a time Delta t

  • Tuning the field in a microwave resonator faster than the photon lifetime
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 92:20, s. 203501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have fabricated and characterized tunable superconducting transmission line resonators. To change the resonance frequency, we modify the boundary condition at one end of the resonator through the tunable Josephson inductance of a superconducting quantum interference device. We demonstrate a large tuning range (several hundred megahertz), high quality factors (10(4)), and that we can change the frequency of a few-photon field on a time scale orders of magnitude faster than the photon lifetime of the resonator. This demonstration has implications in a variety of applications.

  • Ultralow 1/f noise in epigraphene devices
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : American Institute of Physics Inc.. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 124:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the lowest recorded levels of 1/ f noise for graphene-based devices, at the level of S V / V 2 = S I / I 2 = 4.4 × 10 − 16 (1/Hz), measured at f = 10 Hz ( S V / V 2 = S I / I 2 < 10 − 16 1/Hz for f > 100 Hz) in large-area epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide (epigraphene) Hall sensors. This performance is made possible through the combination of high material quality, low contact resistance achieved by edge contact fabrication process, homogeneous doping, and stable passivation of the graphene layer. Our study explores the nature of 1/ f noise as a function of carrier density and device geometry and includes data from Hall sensors with device area range spanning over six orders of magnitude, with characteristic device length ranging from L = 1 μm to 1 mm. In optimized graphene Hall sensors, we demonstrate arrays to be a viable route to improve further the magnetic field detection: a simple parallel connection of two devices displays record-high magnetic field sensitivity at room temperature, with minimum detectable magnetic field levels down to B min = 9.5 nT/√Hz. The remarkable low levels of 1/ f noise observed in epigraphene devices hold immense capacity for the design and fabrication of scalable epigraphene-based sensors with exceptional performance. © 2024 Author(s).

  • Gate-tunable pairing channels in superconducting non-centrosymmetric oxides nanowires
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: npj Quantum Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2397-4648. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two-dimensional SrTiO3-based interfaces stand out among non-centrosymmetric superconductors due to their intricate interplay of gate-tunable Rashba spin-orbit coupling and multi-orbital electronic occupations, whose combination theoretically prefigures various forms of non-standard superconductivity. By employing superconducting transport measurements in nano-devices we present strong experimental indications of unconventional superconductivity in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. The central observations are the substantial anomalous enhancement of the critical current by small magnetic fields applied perpendicularly to the plane of electron motion, and the asymmetric response with respect to the magnetic field direction. These features cannot be accommodated within a scenario of canonical spin-singlet superconductivity. We demonstrate that the experimental observations can be described by a theoretical model based on the coexistence of Josephson channels with intrinsic phase shifts. Our results exclude a time-reversal symmetry breaking scenario and suggest the presence of anomalous pairing components that are compatible with inversion symmetry breaking and multi-orbital physics.

  • Nanopatterning of weak links in superconducting oxide interfaces
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nanomaterials. - : MDPI AG. - 2079-4991. ; 11:2, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interface between two wide band-gap insulators, LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 (LAO/STO), hosts a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (q2DEG), two-dimensional superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and giant Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The co-existence of two-dimensional superconductivity with gate-tunable spin-orbit coupling and multiband occupation is of particular interest for the realization of unconventional superconducting pairing. To investigate the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter, phase sensitive measurements of the Josephson effect are required. We describe an approach for the fabrication of artificial superconducting weak links at the LAO/STO interface using direct high-resolution electron beam lithography and low-energy argon ion beam irradiation. The method does not require lift-off steps or sacrificial layers. Therefore, resolution is only limited by the electron beam lithography and pattern transfer. We have realized superconducting weak links with a barrier thickness of 30–100 nm. The barrier transparency of the weak links can be controlled by the irradiation dose and further tuned by a gate voltage. Our results open up new possibilities for the realization of quantum devices in oxide interfaces.

  • Low-Vacuum Catalyst-Free Physical Vapor Deposition and Magnetotransport Properties of Ultrathin Bi 2 Se 3 Nanoribbons
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nanomaterials. - 2079-4991. ; 13:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, a simple catalyst-free physical vapor deposition method is optimized by adjusting source material pressure and evaporation time for the reliable obtaining of freestanding nanoribbons with thicknesses below 15 nm. The optimum synthesis temperature, time and pressure were determined for an increased yield of ultrathin Bi2Se3 nanoribbons with thicknesses of 8–15 nm. Physical and electrical characterization of the synthesized Bi2Se3 nanoribbons with thicknesses below 15 nm revealed no degradation of properties of the nanoribbons, as well as the absence of the contribution of trivial bulk charge carriers to the total conductance of the nanoribbons.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Asia Communications and Photonics Conference, ACP. - Washington, D.C. : OSA. - 2162-108X.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Molecular beam epitaxy of Bi2Te3 on various substrates for thermoelectric applications is investigated. Growth conditions were optimized based on Si(111) substrates with two different growth techniques, co-deposition followed by crystallization and direct growth. Growth of Bi 2Te3 on GaAs, GaN, et. al. substrates with different crystal directions and offcut angles were investigated. High quality Bi2Te3 thin films were achieved with very low carrier density and record high carrier mobility.
