• TiO2 nanomaterial detection in calcium rich matrices by spICPMS. A matter of resolution and treatment
• 2017
• Ingår i: Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 0267-9477 .- 1364-5544. ; 32:7, s. 1400-1411
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• High Ca concentrations in complex matrices such as river waters often hamper the detection of titanium nanomaterials (TiO2 NPs) by single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICPMS), because of isobaric interference of Ca-48 on the most abundant Ti isotope (Ti-48). Several approaches were used to reduce this interference while measuring TiO2 in solutions with different Ca concentrations up to 100 mg L-1. ICP-MS/MS was used with ammonia as the reaction ceLL gas and high resoLution (HR) ICP-MS was used under different resoLution settings. These approaches were compared by measuring different Ti isotopes (Ti-47 and Ti-49). spICPMS data were then treated with a deconvoLution method to filter out dissolved signals and identify the best approach to detect the Lowest possible corresponding spherical size of TiO2 NPs (D,in). ICP-MS/MS aLLowed for an important decrease of the theoretical D-min compared to standard quadrupole ICP-MS, down to 64 nm in uLtrapure water; however the sensitivity was reduced by the reaction gas and increasing Ca concentrations also increased the D-min. The comparably higher sensitivity of HR-ICP-MS aLLowed for theoretically measuring a D-min of 10 nm in uLtrapure water. Combined with the deconvoLution analysis, the highest resoLution mode in HR-ICP-MS Leads to the Lowest D-min at high Ca concentrations, even though significant broadening of the measured mass distributions occurred for TiO2 NPs at Ca concentrations up to 100 mg L-1.

• Ag nanoaggregates as efficient broadband sensitizers for Tb3+ ions in silica-zirconia ion-exchanged sol-gel glasses and glass-ceramics
• 2018
• Ingår i: Optical materials (Amsterdam). - : Elsevier. - 0925-3467 .- 1873-1252. ; 84, s. 668-674
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• In this paper we report the study of down-shifting silica-zirconia glass and glass-ceramic films doped by Tb3+ ions and Ag nanoaggregates, which combine the typical spectral properties of the rare-earth-ions with the broadband sensitizing effect of the metal nanostructures. Na-Tb co-doped silica-zirconia samples were obtained by a modified sol-gel route. Dip-coating deposition followed by annealing for solvent evaporation and matrix densification were repeated several times, obtaining a homogeneous crack-free film. A final treatment at 700 °C or 1000 °C was performed to control the nanoscale structural properties of the samples, resulting respectively in a glass (G) or a glass-ceramic (GC), where tetragonal zirconia nanocrystals are surrounded by an amorphous silica matrix. Ag introduction was then achieved by ion-exchange in a molten salt bath, followed by annealing in air to control the migration and aggregation of the metal ions. The comparison of the structural, compositional and optical properties are presented for G and GC samples, providing evidence of highly efficient photoluminescence enhancement in both systems, slightly better in G than in GC samples, with a remarkable increase of the green Tb3+ PL emission at 330 nm excitation: 12 times for G and 8 times for GC samples. Furthermore, after Ag-exchange, the shape of Tb3+ excitation resembles the one of Ag ions/nanoaggregates, with a broad significant absorption in the whole UV-blue spectral region. This broadband enhanced downshifting could find potential applications in lighting devices and in PV solar cells.

• Implications of Placebo and Nocebo Effects for Clinical Practice: Expert Consensus
• 2018
• Ingår i: Psychotherapy and psychosomatics. - : S. Karger AG. - 1423-0348 .- 0033-3190. ; 87:4, s. 204-210
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Background: Placebo and nocebo effects occur in clinical or laboratory medical contexts after administration of an inert treatment or as part of active treatments and are due to psychobiological mechanisms such as expectancies of the patient. Placebo and nocebo studies have evolved from predominantly methodological research into a far-reaching interdisciplinary field that is unravelling the neurobiological, behavioural and clinical underpinnings of these phenomena in a broad variety of medical conditions. As a consequence, there is an increasing demand from health professionals to develop expert recommendations about evidence-based and ethical use of placebo and nocebo effects for clinical practice. Methods: A survey and interdisciplinary expert meeting by invitation was organized as part of the 1st Society for Interdisciplinary Placebo Studies (SIPS) conference in 2017. Twenty-nine internationally recognized placebo researchers participated. Results: There was consensus that maximizing placebo effects and minimizing nocebo effects should lead to better treatment outcomes with fewer side effects. Experts particularly agreed on the importance of informing patients about placebo and nocebo effects and training health professionals in patient-clinician communication to maximize placebo and minimize nocebo effects. Conclusions: The current paper forms a first step towards developing evidence-based and ethical recommendations about the implications of placebo and nocebo research for medical practice, based on the current state of evidence and the consensus of experts. Future research might focus on how to implement these recommendations, including how to optimize conditions for educating patients about placebo and nocebo effects and providing training for the implementation in clinical practice.

• On the role of the extracellular space on the holistic behavior of the brain
• 2015
• Ingår i: Reviews in the neurosciences. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 2191-0200 .- 0334-1763. ; 26:5, s. 489-506
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Multiple players are involved in the brain integrative action besides the classical neuronal and astrocyte networks. In the past, the concept of complex cellular networks has been introduced to indicate that all the cell types in the brain can play roles in its integrative action. Intercellular communication in the complex cellular networks depends not only on well-delimited communication channels (wiring transmission) but also on diffusion of signals in physically poorly delimited extracellular space pathways (volume transmission). Thus, the extracellular space and the extracellular matrix are the main players in the intercellular communication modes in the brain. Hence, the extracellular matrix is an ‘intelligent glue’ that fills the brain and, together with the extracellular space, contributes to the building-up of the complex cellular networks. In addition, the extracellular matrix is part of what has been defined as the global molecular network enmeshing the entire central nervous system, and plays important roles in synaptic contact homeostasis and plasticity. From these premises, a concept is introduced that the global molecular network, by enmeshing the central nervous system, contributes to the brain holistic behavior. Furthermore, it is suggested that plastic ‘brain compartments’ can be detected in the central nervous system based on the astrocyte three-dimensional tiling of the brain volume and on the existence of local differences in cell types and extracellular space fluid and extracellular matrix composition. The relevance of the present view for neuropsychiatry is discussed. A glossary box with terms and definitions is provided.
