Search for excited electrons in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV

- We present the results of a search for the production of an excited state of the electron, e(*), in proton-antiproton collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. The data were collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 1 fb(-1). We search for e(*) in the process p (p) over bar -> e(*)e, with the e(*) subsequently decaying to an electron plus photon. No excess above the standard model background is observed. Interpreting our data in the context of a model that describes e(*) production by four-fermion contact interactions and e(*) decay via electroweak processes, we set 95% C.L. upper limits on the production cross section ranging from 8.9 to 27 fb, depending on the mass of the excited electron. Choosing the scale for contact interactions to be Lambda = 1 TeV, excited electron masses below 756 GeV are excluded at the 95% C.L.

- We report on a search for large extra dimensions in a data sample of approximately 1 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV. We investigate Kaluza-Klein graviton production with a photon and missing transverse energy in the final state. At the 95% C.L. we set limits on the fundamental mass scale M-D from 884 to 778 GeV for two to eight extra dimensions.

- We report the results of a search for pair production of doubly charged Higgs bosons via p (p) over bar -> H++H--X ->mu(+)mu(+)mu(-)mu X- at root s=1.96 TeV. We use a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.1 fb(-1) collected from 2002 to 2006 by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. In the absence of an excess above the standard model background, lower mass limits of M(H-L(+/-+/-))> 150 GeV/c(2) and M(H-R(+/-+/-))> 127 GeV/c(2) at 95% C.L. are set, respectively, for left-handed and right-handed doubly charged Higgs bosons assuming a 100% branching ratio into muons.

- We present a search for the pair production of scalar top quarks, (t) over tilde, using 995 pb(-1) of data collected in p (p) over bar collisions with the Dempty set detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. Both scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a charm quark and a neutralino ((chi) over tilde (0)(1)), where (chi) over tilde (0)(1) is the lightest supersymmetric particle. This leads to a final state with two acoplanar charm jets and missing transverse energy. We find the yield of such events to be consistent with the standard model expectation, and exclude sets of (t) over tilde and (chi) over tilde (0)(1) masses at the 95% C.L. that substantially extend the domain excluded by previous searches.

- A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 fb(-1) collected by the D phi detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider was analyzed to search for squarks and gluinos produced in p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. No evidence for the production of such particles was observed in topologies involving jets and missing transverse energy, and 95% C.L. lower limits of 379 GeV and 308 GeV were set on the squark and gluino masses, respectively, within the framework of minimal supergravity with tan beta = 3, A(0) = 0, and mu < 0. The corresponding previous limits are improved by 54 GeV and 67 GeV.

- We search for the production of a heavy W ' gauge boson that decays to third generation quarks in 0: 9 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1: 96 TeV, collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We find no significant excess in the final-state invariant mass distribution and set upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction. For a left-handed W ' boson with SM couplings, we set a lower mass limit of 731 GeV. For right-handed W ' bosons, we set lower mass limits of 739 GeV if the W ' boson decays to both leptons and quarks and 768 GeV if the W ' boson decays only to quarks. We also set limits on the coupling of the W ' boson to fermions as a function of its mass.

- We present the first simultaneous measurement of the ratio of branching fractions, R = B(t --> Wb)/B(t --> Wq), with q being a d, s, or b quark, and the top-quark pair production cross section sigma(t (t) over bar) in the lepton plus jets channel using 0.9 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collision data at root s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector. We extract R and sigma(t (t) over bar) by analyzing samples of events with 0, 1, and >= 2 identified b jets. We measure R = 0.97(-0.08)(+0.09) (stat + syst) and sigma(t (t) over bar) = 8.18(-0.84)(+0.90) (stat + syst) +/- 0.50(lumi) pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction.

- We present a search for direct CP violation in B-+/- -> J/psi K-+/- (pi(+/-)) decays. The event sample is selected from 2: 8 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions recorded by D0 experiment in run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The charge asymmetry A(CP)(B+ -> J/psi K+) = +0: 0075 +/- 0: 0061(stat) +/- 0: 0030 (syst) is obtained using a sample of approximately 40 000 B-+/- -> J/psi K-+/- decays. The achieved precision is of the same level as the expected deviation predicted by some extensions of the standard model. We also measured the charge asymmetry A(CP) (B+ -> J/psi pi(+)) = - 0: 09 +/- 0: 08(stat) +/- 0: 03(syst).

- We present a study of eey and mu mu gamma events using 1109 (1009) pb-(1) of data in the electron (muon) channel, respectively. These data were collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp collider at Is = 1.96 TeV. Having observed 453 (515) candidates in the eey (jtAy) final state, we measure the Z gamma production cross section for a photon with transverse energy ET > 7 GeV, separation between the photon and leptons Delta Rey > 0.7, and invariant mass of the di-lepton pair Mee > 30 GeV/(2)(c), to be 4.96 0.30(stat. + syst.) zE 0.30(lumi.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 4.74 0.22 pb. This is the most precise Zy cross section measurement at a hadron collider. We set limits on anomalous trilinear Zyy and ZZy gauge boson couplings of -0.085 < h(30)(y) < 0.084, -0.0053 < h(40)(y) < 0.0054 and -0.083 < h(30)(Z) < 0.082, 30 40 30 -0.0053 < h(40)(Z) < 0.0054 at the 95% C.L. for the form-factor scale A = 1.2 TeV. 40 .

- The process p (p) over bar -> gamma + jet + X is studied using 1.0 fb(-1) of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar collider at a center-of-mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV. Photons are reconstructed in the central rapidity region vertical bar y(gamma)vertical bar < 1.0 with transverse momenta in the range 30 < p(T)(gamma) < 400 GeV while jets are reconstructed in either the central vertical bar y(jet)vertical bar < 0.8 or forward 1.5 < vertical bar y(jet)vertical bar < 2.5 rapidity intervals with P-T(jet) > 15 GeV. The differential cross section d(3 sigma)/dp(T)(gamma) dy(gamma) dy(jet) is measured as a function of p(T)(gamma) in four regions, differing by the relative orientations of the photon and the jet in rapidity. Ratios between the differential cross sections in each region are also presented. Next-to-leading order QCD predictions using different parameterizations of parton distribution functions and theoretical scale choices are compared to the data. The predictions do not simultaneously describe the measured normalization and p(T)(gamma) dependence of the cross section in the four measured regions.
