  • Ultrafast carrier dynamics of near-band-edge emission in single-crystal ZnO nanorods
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Materials research bulletin. - : Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam.. - 0025-5408 .- 1873-4227. ; 46:6, s. 937-940
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on rational synthesis and optical characteristics of highly crystallined ZnO nanorods which were grown by a facile chemical vapor transport method. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra of as-fabricated ZnO nanorods are dominated by near-band-edge emission with a characteristic fine structure due to high crystallinity. Furthermore, the recombination emission involving carrier dynamics of near-band-edge emission in ZnO nanorods was systematically investigated by temperature-dependent time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Recombination peaks pertaining to the exciton emissions are monitored and resolved in both temporal and spatial regimes.

  • Emerging contaminants: A One Health perspective
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Innovation. - 2666-6758. ; 5
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN's Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

  • Association between Smoking and Molecular Subtypes of Colorectal Cancer
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: JNCI Cancer Spectrum. - : Oxford University Press. - 2515-5091. ; 5:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Smoking is associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. Previous studies suggested this association may be restricted to certain molecular subtypes of CRC, but large-scale comprehensive analysis is lacking. Methods: A total of 9789 CRC cases and 11 231 controls of European ancestry from 11 observational studies were included. We harmonized smoking variables across studies and derived sex study specific quartiles of pack-years of smoking for analysis. Four somatic colorectal tumor markers were assessed individually and in combination, including BRAF mutation, KRAS mutation, CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP), and microsatellite instability (MSI) status. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association between smoking and risk of CRC subtypes by molecular characteristics, adjusting for age, sex, and study. All statistical tests were 2-sided and adjusted for Bonferroni correction. Results: Heavier smoking was associated with higher risk of CRC overall and stratified by individual markers (P < .trend <01). The associations differed statistically significantly between all molecular subtypes, which was the most statistically significant for CIMP and BRAF. Compared with never-smokers, smokers in the fourth quartile of pack-years had a 90% higher risk of CIMP-positive CRC (odds ratio 1.90, 95% confidence interval 1.60 to 2.26) but only 35% higher risk for CIMP-negative CRC (odds ratio=1.35, 95% confidence interval 1.22 to 1.49; Pdifference 2.1 × 10-6). The association was also stronger in tumors that were CIMP positive, MSI high, or KRAS wild type when combined (Pdifference < .001).Conclusion: Smoking was associated with differential risk of CRC subtypes defined by molecular characteristics. Heavier smokers had particularly higher risk of CRC subtypes that were CIMP positive and MSI high in combination, suggesting that smoking may be involved in the development of colorectal tumors via the serrated pathway.

  • Enhanced performance and stability of inverted planar perovskite solar cells by incorporating 1,6-diaminohexane dihydrochloride additive
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0927-0248 .- 1879-3398. ; 188, s. 140-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein, 1,6-Diaminohexane Dihydrochloride (1,6-DD) is introduced into perovskite precursors to fabricate the inverted planar perovskite solar cells. By regulating the concentration of 1,6-DD additive, the average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells is enhanced by 20%. The champion device achieves a relatively high PCE of 17% and an excellent fill factor of 80.1%. The PCE of the large-area (1 cm(2)) device also reaches to 13.68%. After exposure to the air for 16 days, the device with 1,6-DD additive still retains above 90% of the initial efficiency, exhibiting good stability. We demonstrate that a small amount of 1,6-DD affects the crystallization dynamic, yielding ideal perovskite film with enhanced crystallinity and enlarged grain size. The two terminal -NH3+ groups passivates the vacancy defects at the perovskite crystal surface, suppressing charge recombination and facilitating charge transportation effectively. Meanwhile, adjacent crystal surfaces are linked through the hexane alkyl chain of 1,6-DD molecule, which enhances the interaction between perovskite grains and anchors the microstructure of perovskite to some degree. Hydrophobic hexane alkyl chains also increase the moisture resistance of perovskite film. Thus, an easy and effective way is provided for fabricating efficient and stable perovskite solar cells.

  • Ethyl Thioglycolate Assisted Multifunctional Surface Modulation for Efficient and Stable Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1616-301X .- 1616-3028.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the core component of sandwich-like perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the quality of perovskite layer is a challenge for further progress in PSCs due to the unfavorable defects and uncontrollable crystallization. Here, a surface post-treatment strategy employing ethyl thioglycolate (ET) as ligand molecule is developed for property manipulation of perovskite films. ET can lower surface energy of perovskite facets and induces secondary growth of grains, giving films with higher crystallinity and lower defect density. Meanwhile, both carbonyl and sulfhydryl in ET can bind to the Pb2+, thus forming bidentate anchoring on the surface for defect passivation. Besides, the perovskite/ET/C60 interface presents improved charge transfer owing to the well-aligned energy levels. Consequently, the power-conversion-efficiency (PCE) is boosted to 22.42% and 23.56% (certified 23.29%) for the FA0.85Cs0.15Pb(I0.95Br0.05)3 and FA0.9MA0.05Cs0.05Pb(I0.95Br0.05)3 PSCs, respectively, and the FA0.85Cs0.15Pb(I0.95Br0.05)3-based PSC with a larger area (1.03 cm2) delivers a PCE of 20.01%. Importantly, ET demonstrates effective management of I2 and PbI2, thereby preventing accelerated degradation and lead leakage of devices. Thanks to the multiple effects of ET, the resulting devices exhibit significantly enhanced ambient stability over a course of 800 h, and a thermal stability of over 1500 h while maintaining 80.4% of its original efficiency. The efficient and stable inverted perovskite solar cells are developed by introducing ethyl thioglycolate for synergistic crystallization modulation, surface passivation and interfacial PbI2/I2 management. image

  • Imputation and subset-based association analysis across different cancer types identifies multiple independent risk loci in the TERT-CLPTM1L region on chromosome 5p15.33
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Human Molecular Genetics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0964-6906 .- 1460-2083. ; 23:24, s. 6616-6633
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have mapped risk alleles for at least 10 distinct cancers to a small region of 63 000 bp on chromosome 5p15.33. This region harbors the TERT and CLPTM1L genes; the former encodes the catalytic subunit of telomerase reverse transcriptase and the latter may play a role in apoptosis. To investigate further the genetic architecture of common susceptibility alleles in this region, we conducted an agnostic subset-based meta-analysis (association analysis based on subsets) across six distinct cancers in 34 248 cases and 45 036 controls. Based on sequential conditional analysis, we identified as many as six independent risk loci marked by common single-nucleotide polymorphisms: five in the TERT gene (Region 1: rs7726159, P = 2.10 × 10(-39); Region 3: rs2853677, P = 3.30 × 10(-36) and PConditional = 2.36 × 10(-8); Region 4: rs2736098, P = 3.87 × 10(-12) and PConditional = 5.19 × 10(-6), Region 5: rs13172201, P = 0.041 and PConditional = 2.04 × 10(-6); and Region 6: rs10069690, P = 7.49 × 10(-15) and PConditional = 5.35 × 10(-7)) and one in the neighboring CLPTM1L gene (Region 2: rs451360; P = 1.90 × 10(-18) and PConditional = 7.06 × 10(-16)). Between three and five cancers mapped to each independent locus with both risk-enhancing and protective effects. Allele-specific effects on DNA methylation were seen for a subset of risk loci, indicating that methylation and subsequent effects on gene expression may contribute to the biology of risk variants on 5p15.33. Our results provide strong support for extensive pleiotropy across this region of 5p15.33, to an extent not previously observed in other cancer susceptibility loci.

  • Chinese Citizen Satisfaction with Government Performance during COVID-19
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Contemporary China. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1067-0564 .- 1469-9400. ; 30:132, s. 930-944
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While foreign pundits have alternatively blamed and praised the Chinese government’s handling of the COVID-19 virus, little is known about how citizens within China understand this performance. This article considers how satisfied Chinese citizens are with their government’s performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. It first considers the impact of authoritarian control, political culture, and/or actual government performance on citizen satisfaction. Then, it tests the consequences of satisfaction and specifically whether citizen satisfaction leads to greater trust. Analyzing data from the first post-COVID survey of its kind (n = 19,816) conducted from April 22 to 28 April 2020, the authors find that Chinese citizens have an overall high level of satisfaction, but that this satisfaction drops with each lower level of government. Further, authoritarian control, political culture, and awareness of government performance all contribute to citizen satisfaction and this in turn, has enhanced public support for the Chinese government.

  • Interleukin-33 is a Novel Immunosuppressor that Protects Cancer Cells from TIL Killing by a Macrophage-Mediated Shedding Mechanism
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : Wiley. - 2198-3844. ; 8:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recognition of specific antigens expressed in cancer cells is the initial process of cytolytic T cell-mediated cancer killing. However, this process can be affected by other non-cancerous cellular components in the tumor microenvironment. Here, it is shown that interleukin-33 (IL-33)-activated macrophages protect melanoma cells from tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte-mediated killing. Mechanistically, IL-33 markedly upregulates metalloprotease 9 (MMP-9) expression in macrophages, which acts as a sheddase to trim NKG2D, an activating receptor expressed on the surface of natural killer (NK) cells, CD8+ T cells, subsets of CD4+ T cells, iNKT cells, and gamma delta T cells. Further, MMP-9 also cleaves the MHC class I molecule, cell surface antigen-presenting complex molecules, expressed in melanoma cells. Consequently, IL-33-induced macrophage MMP-9 robustly mitigates the tumor killing-effect by T cells. Genetic and pharmacological loss-of-function of MMP-9 sheddase restore T cell-mediated cancer killing. Together, these data provide compelling in vitro and in vivo evidence showing novel mechanisms underlying the IL-33-macrophage-MMP-9 axis-mediated immune tolerance against cancer cells. Targeting each of these signaling components, including IL-33 and MMP-9 provides a new therapeutic paradigm for improving anticancer efficacy by immune therapy.

  • Multidimensional Morphology Control for PS-b-P-4 VP Templated Mesoporous Iron (III) Oxide Thin Films
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials Interfaces. - : Wiley. - 2196-7350. ; 8:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mesoporous alpha-Fe2O3 thin films with large area homogeneity demonstrate tremendous potential in multiple applications. In the present work, the synthesis of morphology-controlled alpha-Fe2O3 thin films is realized with polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) diblock copolymer assisted sol-gel chemistry. The solvent category (DMF and 1,4-dioxane) and polymer-to-FeCl3 ratio used for the solution preparation are systematically varied to tune the morphology of the thin films. For both solvents, DMF and 1,4-dioxane, nanocluster structures are obtained with low PS-b-P4VP concentration. When the concentration of PS-b-P4VP reaches the critical micelle concentration, spherical and wormlike porous structures are specifically formed in the DMF and 1,4-dioxane solvent system, respectively. Further increasing the polymer-to-FeCl3 ratios leads to the enlargement of the spherical pore sizes in the DMF system, whereas the center-to-center distances of the wormlike structures in the 1,4-dioxane system decrease. Moreover, DMF/1,4-dioxane solvent mixtures with different volume ratios are applied for the sol-gel solution preparation to gain more insight into how the solvent selectivity affects the thin film morphology. By adjusting the preferential affinity of the solvent mixture to the polymer blocks, a spherical to wormlike pore shape transition is observed with a critical Delta chi value of around 0.77.

  • Separable Microneedle Patch to Protect and Deliver DNA Nanovaccines Against COVID-19
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 15:9, s. 14347-14359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The successful control of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is not only relying on the development of vaccines, but also depending on the storage, transportation, and administration of vaccines. Ideally, nucleic acid vaccine should be directly delivered to proper immune cells or tissue (such as lymph nodes). However, current developed vaccines are normally treated through intramuscular injection, where immune cells do not normally reside. Meanwhile, current nucleic acid vaccines must be stored in a frozen state that may hinder their application in developing countries. Here, we report a separable microneedle (SMN) patch to deliver polymer encapsulated spike (or nucleocapsid) protein encoding DNA vaccines and immune adjuvant for efficient immunization. Compared with intramuscular injection, SMN patch can deliver nanovaccines into intradermal for inducing potent and durable adaptive immunity. IFN-gamma(+)CD4/8(+) and IL-2(+)CD4/8(+) T cells or virus specific IgG are significantly increased after vaccination. Moreover, in vivo results show the SMN patches can be stored at room temperature for at least 30 days without decreases in immune responses. These features of nanovaccines-laden SMN patch are important for developing advanced COVID-19 vaccines with global accessibility.
