    • This letter presents the design, simulation, fabrication, and characterization of an LC-resonator-based chipless RFID tag. The ID-generating circuit is designed based on a reconfigurable LC resonance circuit. Phase position modulation (PPM) coding is used for the enhancement of the coding capacity. The tag has been realized on packaging paper using all printing technique. In fabrication, overprinting process has been investigated as an effective pathway for the improvement of the conductivities. The tag with 4.25-bit coding capacity has been examined using a sweeping frequency signal transmitted from a vector network analyzer, and experimental results confirm the feasibility of the proposed chipless tag. With further optimizations, the tag can be used in the item-level tracking and identification applications, especially for the management of paper tickets and banknotes.

  • Linearly-tapered RFID tag antenna with 40% material reduction for ultra-low-cost applications

    • The development of RFID technology are requiring high performance and low cost tag antennas than ever before. To meet these demands, linear tapering technique is firstly proposed in the design of planar tag antennas. With this strategy, the current distribution along antenna arms is effectively assigned by varying the antenna line width. Compared with conventional ones, the tapered antennas can reduce the material cost by over 40% not only for PCB (Printed Circuit Board) processed, but also for ink-jet printing produced dipole and meander line antennas, while they still maintain comparable performance. With an identical volume of conducting material, the tapered antennas can achieve better radiation performance than non-tapered ones on antenna gains and radiation efficiencies. The method has been successfully verified by applying it onto 869 MHz and 2.45 GHz antennas. The influence of the tapering technique on antenna bandwidth is also investigated.

    • This paper focuses on the process dependence of an inkjet printed folded dipole antenna based on practical parameters in a typical inkjet printing process. We present the effect of width variations and number of overprinting times on the antenna properties such as gain, radiation efficiency and input impedance. Furthermore we investigate the read range degradation of the tag on which the antenna is attached, due to width or thickness variations. In addition, an comparison between an inkjet printed antenna on a regular paper substrate and a copper antenna on Printed Circuit Board (PCB) was made, manifesting the strong competitiveness of the printed silver antenna as a low cost solution.

  • Mining Can Exacerbate Global Degradation of Dryland

    • Groundwater storage (GS) is the major water resource for vegetation in drylands. Thus, positive relationships between vegetative growth condition (VGC) and GS are expected in drylands. Since mining-induced dewatering tends to deplete GS surrounding mine sites, VGC should become less favorable due to a shortage of accessible water. However, quantitative analysis repealed the opposite. We found that global annual mineral production in drylands increased by 24%, while GS decreased by 22% but the VGC improved by 37% (2002–2010). And negative relationships between VGC and GS were detected in 84.7% of global dryland mine sites. We concluded that irrigation supported by mining-induced dewatering promoted the vegetation growth surrounding mine sites. However, since the GS is limited, irrigation-supported vegetation growth is unsustainable. This study elucidates the reason behind these abnormal negative relationships and highlights the potential risk of vegetation degradation induced by unsustainable groundwater depletion in global dryland mine sites.

  • Varying effects of mining development on ecological conditions and groundwater storage in dry region in Inner Mongolia of China

Considerable efforts have been made to understand negative impacts of mining on vegetation conditions for humid regions, while little attention has been paid to impacts of mining in dry regions on ecological conditions and groundwater in an integrated way. A case study including two mines in Inner Mongolia of China was conducted to reveal varying influences of mining on ecology and groundwater under various development phases of the mines during 2002 and 2015. Three such phases were defined based on impacts of mining-induced groundwater variances on vegetation conditions: damaging phase, post-damaging phase, and restoration phase. In the damaging phase, increased (by 341% and 166% in Baiyin and Shengli Mine respectively) vegetation greenness due to drained groundwater irrigation and associated groundwater storage drawdown (by 206% and 60% in Baiyin and Shengli Mine respectively) were identified. The post-damaging phase can be characterized by reduced irrigation due to shutting down of groundwater drainage, causing sharp degradation of vegetation (by 165% (74%)) and recharging of the groundwater storage (by 202% (126%)) below 200 cm depth in Baiyin (Shengli) Mine. And the restoration phase is associated with the termination of the mining and related extraction of groundwater, featured by increased vegetation greenness (by 277%) and groundwater storage (by 196%) in Baiyin Mine. Besides, we found vegetation restoration is 1-year ahead of groundwater restoration. Although the withdrawal of groundwater in the damaging phase boosted thrives of vegetation, mining-induced groundwater depletion and damaged hydrogeological structure have far-reaching implications for local water resources and the living condition of groundwater-dependent vegetation in drylands, which may raise risks of irreversible vegetation degradation and subsequent desertification in long-term droughts.

    • Understanding the underlying mechanisms and links between genome evolution and adaptive innovations stands as a key goal in evolutionary studies. Poplars, among the world's most widely distributed and cultivated trees, exhibit extensive phenotypic diversity and environmental adaptability. In this study, we present a genus-level super-pangenome comprising 19 Populus genomes, revealing the likely pivotal role of private genes in facilitating local environmental and climate adaptation. Through the integration of pangenomes with transcriptomes, methylomes, and chromatin accessibility mapping, we unveil that the evolutionary trajectories of pangenes and duplicated genes are closely linked to local genomic landscapes of regulatory and epigenetic architectures, notably CG methylation in gene-body regions. Further comparative genomic analyses have enabled the identification of 142 202 structural variants across species that intersect with a significant number of genes and contribute substantially to both phenotypic and adaptive divergence. We have experimentally validated a ∼180-bp presence/absence variant affecting the expression of the CUC2 gene, crucial for leaf serration formation. Finally, we developed a user-friendly web-based tool encompassing the multi-omics resources associated with the Populus super-pangenome (http://www.populus-superpangenome.com). Together, the present pioneering super-pangenome resource in forest trees not only aids in the advancement of breeding efforts of this globally important tree genus but also offers valuable insights into potential avenues for comprehending tree biology.

  • Genomic analysis of Staphylococcus aureus along a pork production chain and in the community, Shandong Province, China

    • Livestock-associated meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) is an increasingly important public health concern worldwide; however, data on LA-MRSA from Asian countries is scarce. As such, a comprehensive molecular epidemiological survey of S. aureus along a pork production chain and in the community was undertaken in Shandong Province, China. spa typing and whole-genome sequencing were used to survey the occurrence and potential transmission of S. aureus in various sectors, including 899 porcine samples (snout or skin swabs, carcass swabs and pork portions), 845 human nasal samples and 239 environmental samples from commercial farms, a slaughterhouse, a pork wholesale market and the surrounding community. MRSA was detected in higher frequencies in samples from two commercial pig farms (pigs, 49%; farm workers, 64%; environmental samples, 16%) than in samples from the slaughterhouse (fatteners, 8.2%; carcasses, 1.1%; operation workers, 0%; environmental samples, 3.8%), the pork wholesale market (pork, 14%; sellers, 0%) and individuals in the community (6.8%). There were significant differences in population structures, antimicrobial susceptibility profiles, and the presence of resistance and virulence genes between human- and pig-associated isolates. The phylogenetic analysis confirmed the dissemination of LA-MRSA between various segments along the pork production chain. However, MRSA of the same sequence type was not found to be disseminated between the commercial farms and the surrounding communities. Furthermore, one MRSA ST398 was observed, and a novel CC9 variant ST3597 was detected within the chain. The high MRSA carriage rates and the emergence of a new MRSA CC9 variant identified in this study highlight the need for MRSA surveillance.

    • INTRODUCTION: To effectively minimise the emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria, a holistic One Health approach is called for. The Sino-Swedish Integrated Multisectoral Partnership for Antibiotic Resistance Containment is a cross-sectoral and integrated project on antibiotic resistance, conducted in Shandong Province in China. This paper outlines the overall study protocol for the project. To our knowledge, this is the first research programme aiming to take a true holistic approach across multiple sectors simultaneously in China, and the first to incorporate both antibiotic use and infection prevention and control in addition to antibiotic resistance patterns. The project aims to address gaps in current knowledge and seeks to improve the situation through a system-wide intervention. By using a One Health approach we can address important research questions that individual discipline investigations are unable to. The results obtained should thus more closely reflect the world in which human health, animal health and the environment are inextricably and intimately interlinked.METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Both quantitative and qualitative studies are included for households from 12 villages, their surrounding environment and a tertiary care hospital in a nearby town. The studies include analyses of antibiotic consumption for humans and pigs; qualitative and quantitative data on perceptions, knowledge and attitudes; faecal carriage of extended spectrum β-lactamase and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae from pigs and humans, and occurrence in household drinking water, surface water, waste water and clinical bacterial isolates from the hospital. Carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in humans, household pigs and clinical bacterial isolates is also investigated. Furthermore, potential inter-relationships between these sources are analysed. A multifaceted One Health intervention is designed and implemented in 6 of the 12 villages. Repeated and continuous data collections take place over 2 years, where the repeated data collection is performed after 1 year of intervention. Comparisons are made between intervention and control villages, before and after the intervention.ETHICS: Ethics approval was obtained from the first Affiliated Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang University, China, reference number 2015#185 and 2015#283.

  • Evolution of future precipitation extremes: Viewpoint of climate change classification

    • Climate change is often described as the average changes in temperature and precipitation; however, it is the change in climate extremes determines the levels of socioeconomic impacts related to climate change. It is generally believed that global warming drives increase in frequency, intensity and duration of precipitation extremes, but these changes vary regionally. Focusing on the relationships between evolution of extreme events and long-term climate change, here we propose a novel classification scheme based on Kӧppen's system and changes in mean and variability of precipitation, divide the global climate into 20 different changing types and reveal the regional evolution of precipitation extremes. We find that precipitation extremes ascend significantly in wetting regions, especially in tropical and temperate zones, independent with changed variability. As for drying regions, the evolution of extremes is related to precipitation variability. An increase of extremes can still be detected in fluctuant-drying areas, while a slight decrease can be seen in stabilized-drying areas. It is surprising to find increase in both wetness and dryness extremes which implies higher intensity of meteorological hazards in densely populated areas. Based on the current and projected growth of population exposure to precipitation extremes, we identify some hotspots with high potential risk in the future.

    • This paper presents the model development of Agere eletro-thermal transistor, an electro-thermal large signal nonlinear RF-LDMOSFET model used in radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs). We first describe our model schematics, then the iso-thermal and pulsed device characterization systems used in the parametrization of the model are described. The extracted model is implemented in Agilent's Advanced Design System (ADS) for the development of several PAs. Finally, the model accuracy is measured by comparing several experimental verifications of physical chips against those of EDA designs.
