  • Electronic and excitonic properties of two-dimensional and bulk InN crystals
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: RSC Advances. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2046-2069. ; 7:67, s. 42455-42461
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motivated by potential extensive applications in nanoelectronics devices of III-Vmaterials, we calculate the structural and optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) InN as well as its three-dimensional (3D) counterparts by using density functional theory (DFT). Compared with the 3D form, the In-N bonding in the 2D InN layer is stronger in terms of the shorter bond length, and the formation of the 2D one is higher in terms of the lower cohesive energy. The bandgap of monolayer InN is 0.31 eV at PBE level and 2.02 eV at GW(0) level. By many-body GW(0) and BSE within RPA calculations, monolayer InN presents an exciton binding energy of 0.12 eV. The fundamental bandgap increases along with layer reduction and is converted from direct (0.7-0.9 eV) in bulk InN to indirect (2.02 eV) in monolayer InN. Under biaxial compressive strain, the bandgap of 2D-InN can be further tuned from indirect to direct.

  • Strong link between large tropical volcanic eruptions and severe droughts prior to monsoon in the central Himalayas revealed by tree-ring records
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Science Bulletin. - : Elsevier BV. - 2095-9273. ; 64:14, s. 1018-1023
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Large tropical volcanic eruptions can cause short-term global cooling. However, little is known whether large tropical volcanic eruptions, like the one in Tambora/Indonesia in 1815, cause regional hydroclimatic anomalies. Using a tree-ring network of precisely dated Himalayan birch in the central Himalayas, we reconstructed variations in the regional pre-monsoon precipitation back to 1650 CE. A superposed epoch analysis indicates that the pre-monsoon regional droughts are associated with large tropical volcanic eruptions, appearing to have a strong influence on hydroclimatic conditions in the central Himalayas. In fact, the most severe drought since 1650 CE occurred after the Tambora eruption. These results suggest that dry conditions prior to monsoon in the central Himalayas were associated with explosive tropical volcanism. Prolonged La Nina events also correspond with persistent pre-monsoon droughts in the central Himalayas. Our results provide evidence that large tropical volcanic eruptions most likely induced severe droughts prior to monsoon in the central Himalayas. (C) 2019 Science China Press. • Template-Induced Growth of Sputter-Deposited Gold Nanoparticles on Ordered Porous TiO2 Thin Films for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensors
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Nano Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2574-0970. ; 5:5, s. 7492-7501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ordered porous gold/titanium dioxide (Au/TiO2) hybrid nanostructured films are specifically interesting in large-scale applications using localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Deposition of Au nanoparticles via sputter deposition is one of the promising technologies to establish optically active sites at low cost in combination with nanostructured TiO2 films. In this work, we investigate the optical response of sputter-deposited Au/TiO2 nanohybrid thin films with a focus on the plasmonic response and application as molecular sensors. The LSPR peak red shifts with an increasing thickness of deposited Au. The Raman intensity of deposited molecules, probed with rhodamine 6G (R6G), depends on the deposited gold thickness. It has its maximum at an effective Au thickness of 3.4 nm. To elucidate the origin of this behavior, we apply in situ grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) to investigate the growth kinetics of Au on a TiO2 template during sputter deposition. On the basis of time-resolved GISAXS, the growth characteristics of sputter-deposited Au on a TiO2 template with a final effective Au layer thickness around the percolation threshold is described with the well-known four-stage model of nucleation and cluster formation, diffusion-mediated growth, adsorption-mediated growth, and grain growth. The maximum in SERS intensity is corroborated by the existence and optimal size of hot spots in the narrow space occurring between the sputter-deposited Au clusters, on staying below the percolation threshold. On the basis of the growth laws extracted, we give a guideline for tailoring the ordered porous Au/TiO2 nanohybrid thin films for SERS sensor applications.

  • Closing the case of APOE in multiple sclerosis : no association with disease risk in over 29 000 subjects
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medical Genetics. - : BMJ. - 0022-2593 .- 1468-6244. ; 49:9, s. 558-562
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs429358 (ε4) and rs7412 (ε2), both invoking changes in the amino-acid sequence of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene, have previously been tested for association with multiple sclerosis (MS) risk. However, none of these studies was sufficiently powered to detect modest effect sizes at acceptable type-I error rates. As both SNPs are only imperfectly captured on commonly used microarray genotyping platforms, their evaluation in the context of genome-wide association studies has been hindered until recently. Methods We genotyped 12 740 subjects hitherto not studied for their APOE status, imputed raw genotype data from 8739 subjects from five independent genome-wide association studies datasets using the most recent high-resolution reference panels, and extracted genotype data for 8265 subjects from previous candidate gene assessments. Results Despite sufficient power to detect associations at genome-wide significance thresholds across a range of ORs, our analyses did not support a role of rs429358 or rs7412 on MS susceptibility. This included meta-analyses of the combined data across 13 913 MS cases and 15 831 controls (OR=0.95, p=0.259, and OR 1.07, p=0.0569, for rs429358 and rs7412, respectively). Conclusion Given the large sample size of our analyses, it is unlikely that the two APOE missense SNPs studied here exert any relevant effects on MS susceptibility.

  • Streptococcus gordonii type I lipoteichoic acid contributes to surface protein biogenesis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: mSphere. - : American Society for Microbiology. - 2379-5042. ; 4:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lipoteichoic acid (LTA) is an abundant polymer of the Gram-positive bacterial cell envelope and is essential for many species. Whereas the exact function of LTA has not been elucidated, loss of LTA in some species affects hydrophobicity, biofilm formation, and cell division. Using a viable LTA-deficient strain of the human oral commensal Streptococcus gordonii, we demonstrated that LTA plays an important role in surface protein presentation. Cell wall fractions derived from the wild-type and LTA-deficient strains of S. gordonii were analyzed using label-free mass spectroscopy. Comparisons showed that the abundances of many proteins differed, including (i) SspA, SspB, and S. gordonii 0707 (SGO_0707) (biofilm formation); (ii) FtsE (cell division); (iii) Pbp1a and Pbp2a (cell wall biosynthesis and remodeling); and (iv) DegP (envelope stress response). These changes in cell surface protein presentation appear to explain our observations of altered cell envelope homeostasis, biofilm formation, and adhesion to eukaryotic cells, without affecting binding and coaggregation with other bacterial species, and provide insight into the phenotypes revealed by the loss of LTA in other species of Gram-positive bacteria. We also characterized the chemical structure of the LTA expressed by S. gordonii Similarly to Streptococcus suis, S. gordonii produced a complex type I LTA, decorated with multiple d-alanylations and glycosylations. Hence, the S. gordonii LTA appears to orchestrate expression and presentation of cell surface-associated proteins and functions.IMPORTANCE Discovered over a half-century ago, lipoteichoic acid (LTA) is an abundant polymer found on the surface of Gram-positive bacteria. Although LTA is essential for the survival of many Gram-positive species, knowledge of how LTA contributes to bacterial physiology has remained elusive. Recently, LTA-deficient strains have been generated in some Gram-positive species, including the human oral commensal Streptococcus gordonii The significance of our research is that we utilized an LTA-deficient strain of S. gordonii to address why LTA is physiologically important to Gram-positive bacteria. We demonstrate that in S. gordonii, LTA plays an important role in the presentation of many cell surface-associated proteins, contributing to cell envelope homeostasis, cell-to-cell interactions in biofilms, and adhesion to eukaryotic cells. These data may broadly reflect a physiological role of LTA in Gram-positive bacteria.

  • Present and future European heat wave magnitudes: climatologies, trends, and their associated uncertainties in GCM-RCM model chains
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Earth System Dynamics. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 2190-4979 .- 2190-4987. ; 13:3, s. 1197-1214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates present and future European heat wave magnitudes, represented by the Heat Wave Magnitude Index-daily (HWMId), for regional climate models (RCMs) and the driving global climate models (GCMs) over Europe. A subset of the large EURO-CORDEX ensemble is employed to study sources of uncertainties related to the choice of GCMs, RCMs, and their combinations. We initially compare the evaluation runs of the RCMs driven by ERA-interim reanalysis to E-OBS (observation-based estimates), finding that the RCMs can capture most of the observed spatial and temporal features of HWMId. With their higher resolution compared to GCMs, RCMs can reveal spatial features of HWMId associated with small-scale processes (e.g., orographic effects); moreover, RCMs represent large-scale features of HWMId satisfactorily (e.g., by reproducing the general pattern revealed by E-OBS with high values at western coastal regions and low values at the eastern part). Our results indicate a clear added value of the RCMs compared to the driving GCMs. Forced with the emission scenario RCP8.5, all the GCM and RCM simulations consistently project a rise in HWMId at an exponential rate. However, the climate change signals projected by the GCMs are generally attenuated when downscaled by the RCMs, with the spatial pattern also altered. The uncertainty in a simulated future change of heat wave magnitudes following global warming can be attributed almost equally to the difference in model physics (as represented by different RCMs) and to the driving data associated with different GCMs. Regarding the uncertainty associated with RCM choice, a major factor is the different representation of the orographic effects. No consistent spatial pattern in the ensemble spread associated with different GCMs is observed between the RCMs, suggesting GCM uncertainties are transformed by RCMs in a complex manner due to the nonlinear nature of model dynamics and physics. In summary, our results support the use of dynamical downscaling for deriving regional climate realization regarding heat wave magnitudes. © Author(s) 2022.

  • Summer afternoon precipitation associated with wind convergence near the Himalayan glacier fronts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-8095. ; 259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little is known about the effects of glacier-air interactions on the Himalayan glacier mass balance. Until this knowledge gap is filled, a reliable projection of the future changes in the Himalayan glaciers is hardly possible. Here, we describe the drying effect of the katabatic winds on the up-valley summer monsoon flows by creating favorable conditions for local convergence-induced precipitation to occur near the glacier fronts. We postulate that this retarding effect on the up-valley monsoon flows results in a negative feedback mechanism mediated by glacier-air interactions, in which glacial retreat pushes precipitation upwards as the down-valley katabatic winds weaken, resulting in greater local precipitation and enhanced snow accumulation across the upper parts of the Himalayan glaciers. Our analyses are based on the exclusive data recorded in the Khumbu valley and the Langtang valley in the Nepalese Himalayas. These data revealed higher afternoon precipitation in summer associated with surface wind convergence near the glacier fronts and a sharp decrease in the temperature lapse rate over the glacier surfaces. The principle of the observed phenomena was proven by our high-resolution modeling sensitive experiment, which involved two simulations, one with the present glaciers and the other without. This numerical experiment also supports the proposed negative feedback. Furthermore, we report a low deuterium excess near the glacier fronts, indicating below-cloud re-evaporation facilitated by the local convergence induced by the dry katabatic winds. Our study suggests that current models may overestimate the retreat of Himalayan glaciers because they have completely ignored the glacier-air interactions. © 2021 The Author(s)

  • Detection of magnetic circular dichroism in amorphous materials utilizing a single-crystalline overlayer
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Materials. - 2475-9953. ; 1:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electron energy-loss magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD) is a novel technique that allows magnetic information determination down to the nanoscale. However, constrained by the predefined diffraction geometry in regular EMCD experiments, it has not yet been feasible to obtain EMCD signals from amorphous materials, due to the lack of long-range ordering. Here we propose a protocol for EMCD detection in amorphous materials utilizing a single-crystalline overlayer acting as a two-beam splitter. Phase locking of the EMCD signals is observed and explained by two conceivable scenarios. Both experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrate significant EMCD signals of amorphous materials.

  • An Ultra-dense Optical Comb Based DWDM-OFDM-PON System
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We proposed and demonstrated an ultra-dense optical comb based DWDM-OFDM-PON scheme. At the optical line terminal (OLT), a cost-effective optical frequency comb generator (OFCG) is proposed and achieved as the multi-wavelength optical source. The OFCG is capable to provide multiple channels with reconfigurable wavelength spacing for ultra-dense WDM-PON based access network. In our scheme, OFDMsignal with multi-level modulation will be encoded into the OFCG lines for the downstream transmission to enhance the spectral efficiency while the OFDM signal will be remodulated by OOK data for the upstream transmission due to its ease of implementation in optical network unit (ONU) side. In experiments, we demonstrated that 10 optical lines with 25 GHz channel spacing are generated and they were modulated by 2.5-GB/s QPSK-OFDM for the downlink signal transmission. We also demonstrated that the multiple wavelengths from the OFCG.

  • Palm-shaped spectrum generation for dual-band millimeter wave and baseband signals over fiber
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Optics Communications. - : Elsevier. - 0030-4018 .- 1873-0310. ; 367, s. 137-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to offer abundant available bandwidth for radio access networks satisfying future 5G requirements on capacity, this paper proposes a simple and cost-effective palm-shaped spectrum generation scheme that can be used for high capacity radio over fiber (RoF) system. The proposed scheme can simultaneously generate an optical carrier used for upstream and two bands of millimeter wave (MMW) that are capable of carrying different downstream data. The experiment results show that the proposed palm-shaped spectrum generation scheme outperforms optical frequency comb (OFC) based multi-band MMW generation in terms of upstream transmission performance. Furthermore, simulation is carried out with different dual-band MMW configurations to verify the feasibility of using the proposed spectrum generation scheme in the RoF system.
