  • Reducing energy lossviatuning energy levels of polymer acceptors for efficient all-polymer solar cells
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science China Chemistry. - : Science China Press and Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany. - 1674-7291 .- 1869-1870. ; 63, s. 1785-1792
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The open-circuit voltage (V-oc) of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) is typically lower than 0.9 V even for the most efficient ones. Large energy loss is the main reason for limitingV(oc)and efficiency of all-PSCs. Herein, through materials design using electron deficient building blocks based on bithiophene imides, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of polymer acceptors can be effectively tuned, which resulted in a reduced energy loss induced by charge generation and recombination loss due to the suppressed charge-transfer (CT) state absorption. Despite a negligible driving force, all-PSC based on the polymer donor and acceptor combination with well-aligned energy levels exhibited efficient charge transfer and achieved an external quantum efficiency over 10% while maintaining a largeV(oc)of 1.02 V, leading to a 9.21% efficiency. Through various spectroscopy approaches, this work sheds light on the mechanism of energy loss in all-PSCs, which paves an avenue to achieving efficient all-PSCs with largeV(oc)and drives the further development of all-PSCs.

  • Studies of modified lithiated NiO cathode for low temperature solid oxide fuel cell with ceria-carbonate composite electrolyte
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International journal of hydrogen energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0360-3199 .- 1879-3487. ; 38:1, s. 370-376
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, the effect of copper, iron and cobalt oxides on electrochemical properties of lithiated NiO cathodes was reported in low temperature solid oxide fuel cell (LT-SOFC) with ceria-carbonate composite electrolyte. The modified lithiated NiO cathodes were characterized by XRD, DC conductivity, SEM and electrochemical measurements. In spite of lower conductivities of modified cathodes, Li-Ni-M (M = Cu, Fe, Co) oxides with the order of Li-Ni-Co oxide > Li-Ni-Fe oxide > Li-Ni-Cu oxide, compared with that without modification, the catalytic activities of all the Li-Ni-M oxides were improved. In particularly, cobalt oxide modification favors both charge transfer and gas diffusion for O2 reduction reaction as confirmed by AC impedance measurements. SEM micrographs show that grains aggregate with the modification of copper oxide or iron oxide, which may be responsible for the increased gas diffusion resistance. The results indicate that the lithiated NiO modified by cobalt oxide as cathode is an alternative to improve LT-SOFC performance with ceria-carbonate composite electrolyte.

  • Survival effect of PDGF-CC rescues neurons from apoptosis in both brain and retina by regulating GSK3β phosphorylation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Experimental Medicine. - : The Rockefeller University Press. - 0022-1007 .- 1540-9538. ; 207:4, s. 867-880
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Platelet-derived growth factor CC (PDGF-CC) is the third member of the PDGF family discovered after more than two decades of studies on the original members of the family, PDGF-AA and PDGF-BB. The biological function of PDGF-CC remains largely to be explored. We report a novel finding that PDGF-CC is a potent neuroprotective factor that acts by modulating glycogen synthase kinase 3beta (GSK3beta) activity. In several different animal models of neuronal injury, such as axotomy-induced neuronal death, neurotoxin-induced neuronal injury, 6-hydroxydopamine-induced Parkinson's dopaminergic neuronal death, and ischemia-induced stroke, PDGF-CC protein or gene delivery protected different types of neurons from apoptosis in both the retina and brain. On the other hand, loss-of-function assays using PDGF-C null mice, neutralizing antibody, or short hairpin RNA showed that PDGF-CC deficiency/inhibition exacerbated neuronal death in different neuronal tissues in vivo. Mechanistically, we revealed that the neuroprotective effect of PDGF-CC was achieved by regulating GSK3beta phosphorylation and expression. Our data demonstrate that PDGF-CC is critically required for neuronal survival and may potentially be used to treat neurodegenerative diseases. Inhibition of the PDGF-CC-PDGF receptor pathway for different clinical purposes should be conducted with caution to preserve normal neuronal functions.

  • Analysis of Efficient TDMA Schedules via the Fat-Tree Network with Real-Time Many-to-Many Communication
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IASTED International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing and Networks. - Anaheim, CA : ACTA Press. - 088986568X ; , s. 192-197
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Real-Time Many-to-Many (RTM2M) communication pattern is widely used in many parallel and distributed computing applications with time constraints such as radar signal processing. In this paper, we propose how to use TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) to achieve efficient support for RTM2M over the fat-tree network built up on 4×2 switches (four children and two parents). Moreover, we have compared four different TDMA schedules in terms of the end-to-end delay and network utilization [1] and presented two of them in detail hereby. The general formulas of the end-to-end delay of two of the most interesting schedules are derived and simulations are represented to both verify the formulas and provide support for the conclusion from the viewpoint of the network utilization.

  • Preparation and characterization of Sm and Ca co-doped ceria-La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-delta semiconductor-ionic composites for electrolyte-layer-free fuel cells
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 4:40, s. 15426-15436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of Sm and Ca co-doped ceria, i.e. Ca0.04Ce0.96-xSmxO2-delta (x = 0, 0.09, 0.16, and 0.24) (SCDC), were synthesized by a co-precipitation method. Detailed morphology, composition, crystal structure and electrochemical properties of the prepared materials were characterized. The results revealed that Sm and Ca co-doping could enhance the ionic conductivity in comparison with that of single Ca-doped samples. The composition as Ca0.04Ce0.80Sm0.16O2-delta exhibited a highest ionic conductivity of 0.039 S cm(-1) at 600 degrees C in comparison with the rest of the series, and the optimal ionic conductivity can be interpreted by the coupling effect of oxygen vacancies and mismatch between the dopant ionic radius and critical radius. Composite formation between the semiconductor La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-delta (LSCF) and the as-prepared SCDC contributed to a remarkable improvement in the ionic conductivity, an unexpectedly high ionic conductivity of 0.188 S cm(-1) was obtained for LSCF-SCDC composites at 600 degrees C, which was four times higher than that of pure SCDC. Using transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy approaches, we detected an enrichment of oxygen in the LSCF-SCDC interface region and a depletion of oxygen vacancies in LSCF-SCDC and LSCF-LSCF grain boundaries was significantly mitigated, which resulted in the enhancement of ionic conductivity of semiconductor-ionic LSCF-SCDC composites. The electrolyte-layer-free fuel cell (EFFC) fabricated from the LSCF-SCDC semiconductor-ionic membrane demonstrated excellent performances, e.g. 814 mW cm(-2) at 550 degrees C for using the LSCF-Ca0.04Ce0.80Sm0.16O2-delta (SCDC2).

  • Imputation and subset-based association analysis across different cancer types identifies multiple independent risk loci in the TERT-CLPTM1L region on chromosome 5p15.33
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Human Molecular Genetics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0964-6906 .- 1460-2083. ; 23:24, s. 6616-6633
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have mapped risk alleles for at least 10 distinct cancers to a small region of 63 000 bp on chromosome 5p15.33. This region harbors the TERT and CLPTM1L genes; the former encodes the catalytic subunit of telomerase reverse transcriptase and the latter may play a role in apoptosis. To investigate further the genetic architecture of common susceptibility alleles in this region, we conducted an agnostic subset-based meta-analysis (association analysis based on subsets) across six distinct cancers in 34 248 cases and 45 036 controls. Based on sequential conditional analysis, we identified as many as six independent risk loci marked by common single-nucleotide polymorphisms: five in the TERT gene (Region 1: rs7726159, P = 2.10 × 10(-39); Region 3: rs2853677, P = 3.30 × 10(-36) and PConditional = 2.36 × 10(-8); Region 4: rs2736098, P = 3.87 × 10(-12) and PConditional = 5.19 × 10(-6), Region 5: rs13172201, P = 0.041 and PConditional = 2.04 × 10(-6); and Region 6: rs10069690, P = 7.49 × 10(-15) and PConditional = 5.35 × 10(-7)) and one in the neighboring CLPTM1L gene (Region 2: rs451360; P = 1.90 × 10(-18) and PConditional = 7.06 × 10(-16)). Between three and five cancers mapped to each independent locus with both risk-enhancing and protective effects. Allele-specific effects on DNA methylation were seen for a subset of risk loci, indicating that methylation and subsequent effects on gene expression may contribute to the biology of risk variants on 5p15.33. Our results provide strong support for extensive pleiotropy across this region of 5p15.33, to an extent not previously observed in other cancer susceptibility loci.

  • APR-246 Enhances Colorectal Cancer Sensitivity to Radiotherapy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Molecular Cancer Therapeutics. - : AMER ASSOC CANCER RESEARCH. - 1535-7163 .- 1538-8514. ; 22:8, s. 947-961
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • p53 mutation is common and highly related to radiotherapy resistance in rectal cancer. APR-246, asa small molecule, can restore the tumor-suppressor function to mutant p53. As there is currently no existing study on combining APR-246 with radiation in rectal cancer, our objective was to investigate whether APR-246 could enhance the sensitivity of colorectal cancer cells, regardless of their p53 status, to radiation treatment. The combination treatment had synergistic effects on HCT116p53-R248W/- (p53Mut) cells, followed by HCT116p53+/+ [wild-type p53 (p53WT)] cells, and exhibited an additive effect on HCT116p53-/- (p53Null) cells through inhibiting proliferation, enhancing reactive oxygen species, and apoptosis. The results were confirmed in zebrafish xenografts. Mechanistically, p53Mut and p53WT cells shared more activated pathways and differentially expressed genes following the combination treat-ment, compared with p53Null cells, although the combination treatment regulated individual pathways in the different cell lines. APR-246 mediated radiosensitization effects through p53-dependent and-independent ways. The results may provide evidence for a clinical trial of the combination in patients with rectal cancer.

  • Removal and recovery of aqueous U(VI) by heterogeneous photocatalysis: Progress and challenges
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1385-8947. ; 450
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the rapidly expanding implementations of nuclear power technology, the contamination of the aquatic environment by uranium is a rising environmental problem. Photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) is a plausible solution to the aqueous uranium contamination, which has generated increasing research interest in the recent decade. Therefore, a systematic assessment highlighting the important direction for future studies is in need. We herein present a critical review to address the following two aspects: (1) the progress and current understandings of photocatalytic U(VI) removal technology, including various applied catalysts, current understanding of the kinetics and mechanisms, the effects of key operation parameters, and the effects of co-existing water constituents; (2) key knowledge gaps that need future research efforts in this field.
