  • Modeling and experimental verification of substrate noise generation in a 220-Kgates WLAN system-on-chip with multiple supplies
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits. - 0018-9200 .- 1558-173X. ; 38:7, s. 1250-1260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Substrate noise is a major obstacle for mixed-signal integration. While the power consumption scales linearly with the clock frequency, substrate noise does not have thin scaling due to the resonances in the transfer function of the supply current to the substrate. This paper addresses a practical technique to estimate the substrate noise frequency spectrum of a large mixed-mode System-on-Chip (SoC) with multiple supplies and embedded memories. The results have been verified with substrate noise measurements on a 60-MHz 220-Kgates telecom SoC implemented in a 0.3 mum CMOS process on an EPI-type substrate. We compute a linear chip-level substrate model together with the single-cycle representation of piecewise-linear noise sources of three. supply regions used in this ASIC. Based on this model we accurately estimate the four major resonances in the substrate poise spectrum and their relative magnitudes with 2 dB relative error at the major resonance with respect to measurements. We also present substrate noise measurements at different operating modes of the WLAN receiver. These measurements show that output I/O buffers generate significant substrate noise where an increase of 44% is measured for substrate noise peak-to-peak value due to the additional simultaneous switching of six output I/O buffers with already fully switching datapath and two output I/Os.

  • A remote-powered RFID tag with 10Mb/s UWB Uplink and -18.5dBm sensitivity UHF downlink in 0.18μm CMOS
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Digest of technical papers / IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference. - 0193-6530. ; , s. 198-199,199a
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, a 10 Mb/s impulse UWB RFID tag in 0.18 mum CMOS is presented. The tag is remotely powered by a UHF signal with a minimum input RF power as low as 14.1 muW. The primary innovation is to employ two different communication links (UWB and UHF) respectively in the uplink and downlink of the tag. This is because the amount of data or instructions from a reader to a tag is small and as a result a conventional UHF-RFID link at 900MHz can be used as the downlink. The UHF signal also provides remote power to the tag. The uplink requires higher data rates and precise positioning capability therefore an l-UWB transmitter is employed.

  • Fully integrated 1.2 pJ/p UWB transmitter with on-chip antenna for wireless identification
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB), 2010 IEEE International Conference on. - : IEEE Press. - 9781424453061 ; , s. 237-240
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A fully CMOS integrated impulse ultra wideband transmitter with monolithically on-chipantenna (OCA) for wireless identification is presented. Both OOK and BPSK modulation schemes are supported by the module. The chip is fabricated in standard 0.18μm CMOS technology. Direct measurement verifies the chip operation and wireless transmission measurement shows 7cm operation range with 1.2 pJ/pulse consumption at 10MPps, which is a huge improvement compared with related reported work with OCA.

  • Considering the energy, water and food nexus : Towards an integrated modelling approach
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Energy Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0301-4215 .- 1873-6777. ; 39:12, s. 7896-7906
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The areas of energy, water and food policy have numerous interwoven concerns ranging from ensuring access to services, to environmental impacts to price volatility. These issues manifest in very different ways in each of the three "spheres", but often the impacts are closely related. Identifying these interrelationships a priori is of great importance to help target synergies and avoid potential tensions. Systems thinking is required to address such a wide swath of possible topics. This paper briefly describes some of the linkages at a high-level of aggregation - primarily from a developing country perspective - and via case studies, to arrive at some promising directions for addressing the nexus. To that end, we also present the attributes of a modelling framework that specifically addresses the nexus, and can thus serve to inform more effective national policies and regulations. While environmental issues are normally the 'cohesive principle' from which the three areas are considered jointly, the enormous inequalities arising from a lack of access suggest that economic and security-related issues may be stronger motivators of change. Finally, consideration of the complex interactions will require new institutional capacity both in industrialised and developing countries.

  • Influence of bone remodelling rate on quantitative ultrasound parameters at the calcaneus and DXA BMDa of the hip and spine in middle-aged and elderly European men: the European Male Ageing Study (EMAS)
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Endocrinology. - 1479-683X. ; 165:6, s. 977-986
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To assess the influence of sex hormones on markers of bone turnover and to explore the association between these markers and bone health in middle-aged and elderly European men. Design: A cross-sectional population-based survey. Methods: Men aged 40-79 years were recruited from population registers in eight European centres. Subjects completed a postal questionnaire which included questions concerning lifestyle and were invited to undergo quantitative ultrasound (QUS) of the calcaneus and to provide a fasting blood sample from which the bone markers serum N-terminal propeptide of type 1 procollagen (P1NP) and crosslinks (beta C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide (beta-cTX)), total testosterone, total oestradiol (E-2), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) were measured. Dualenergy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the hip and lumbar spine was performed in two centres. Results: A total of 3120, mean age 59.9 years (S.D. = 11.0) were included. After adjustment for centre, age, height, weight, lifestyle factors, season and other hormones, total and free E-2 were negatively associated with beta-cTX but not P1NP while SHBG, IGF1 and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were positively associated with both beta-cTX and P1NP. Total or free testosterone was not independently associated with either bone marker. After the same adjustments, higher levels of both bone markers were significantly associated with lower QUS parameters and lower DXA-assessed bone density at the total hip and lumbar spine. Conclusions: E-2, SHBG, IGF1 and PTH contribute significantly to the regulation/rate of bone turnover in middle-aged and older European men. Higher rates of bone remodelling are negatively associated with male bone health.

  • Frailty and bone health in European men
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Age and Ageing. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0002-0729 .- 1468-2834. ; 46:4, s. 635-641
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: frailty is associated with an increased risk of fragility fractures. Less is known, however, about the association between frailty and bone health. Methods: men aged 40-79 years were recruited from population registers in eight European centres for participation in the European Male Aging Study. Subjects completed a comprehensive assessment which included quantitative ultrasound (QUS) scan of the heel (Hologic-SAHARA) and in two centres, dual-energy bone densitometry (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, DXA). Frailty was defined based on an adaptation of Fried's phenotype criteria and a frailty index (FI) was constructed. The association between frailty and the QUS and DXA parameters was determined using linear regression, with adjustments for age, body mass index and centre. Results: in total, 3,231 subjects contributed data to the analysis. Using the Fried categorisation of frailty, pre-frail and frail men had significantly lower speed of sound (SOS), broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) and quantitative ultrasound index (QUI) compared to robust men (P< 0.05). Similar results were seen using the FI after categorisation into 'high', 'medium' and 'low' levels of frailty. Using the Fried categorisation, frail men had lower femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) compared to robust men (P < 0.05), but not lower lumbar spine BMD. Using the FI categorisation, a 'high' level of frailty (FI > 0.35) was associated with lower lumbar spine BMD (P < 0.05) when compared to those with low (FI < 0.2), but not lower femoral neck BMD. When analysed as a continuous variable, higher FI was linked with lower SOS, BUA and QUI (P < 0.05).Conclusions: optimisation of bone health as well as prevention of falls should be considered as strategies to reduce fractures in frail older people.
