  • On the fate of oxygenated organic molecules in atmospheric aerosol particles
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 2375-2548. ; 6:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) are formed from the oxidation of biogenic and anthropogenic gases and affect Earth's climate and air quality by their key role in particle formation and growth. While the formation of these molecules in the gas phase has been extensively studied, the complexity of organic aerosol (OA) and lack of suitable measurement techniques have hindered the investigation of their fate post-condensation, although further reactions have been proposed. We report here novel real-time measurements of these species in the particle phase, achieved using our recently developed extractive electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (EESI-TOF). Our results reveal that condensed-phase reactions rapidly alter OA composition and the contribution of HOMs to the particle mass. In consequence, the atmospheric fate of HOMs cannot be described solely in terms of volatility, but particle-phase reactions must be considered to describe HOM effects on the overall particle life cycle and global carbon budget.

  • Patient demographic and surgical characteristics in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a description of registries from six countries
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Sports Medicine. - : BMJ. - 0306-3674 .- 1473-0480. ; 52:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective Findings from individual anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) registry studies are impactful, but how various registries from different countries compare with different patient populations and surgical techniques has not been described. We sought to describe six ACLR registry cohorts to understand variation across countries. Methods Five European registries and one US registry participated. For each registry, all primary ACLR registered between registry establishment through 31December 2014 were identified. Descriptive statistics included frequencies, proportions, medians and IQRs. Revision incidence rates following primary ACLR were computed. Results 101 125 ACLR were included: 21820 in Denmark, 300 in Luxembourg, 17556 in Norway, 30422 in Sweden, 2972 in the UK and 28055 in the US. In all six cohorts, males (range: 56.8%-72.4%) and soccer injuries (range: 14.1%-42.3%) were most common. European countries mostly used autografts (range: 93.7%-99.7%); allograft was most common in the US (39.9%). Interference screw was the most frequent femoral fixation in Luxembourg and the US (84.8% and 42.9%), and suspensory fixation was more frequent in the other countries (range: 43.9%-75.5%). Interference was the most frequent tibial fixation type in all six cohorts (range: 64.8%-98.2%). Three-year cumulative revision probabilities ranged from 2.8% to 3.7%. Conclusions Similarities in patient demographics and injury activity were observed between all cohorts of ACLR. However, graft and fixation choices differed. Revision rates were low. This work, including >100 000 ACLR, is the most comprehensive international description of contemporary practice to date.

  • Fabrication of self-organized InP nanopillars by ion-bombardment for optoelectronic applications
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE 14th Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Conference, NMDC 2019. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728126371
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, we investigate a wafer-scale, lithography-free, self-assembled indium phosphide (InP) nanopillars fabrication method based on ion bombardment. The influence of process conditions, such as the substrate temperature, ion beam energy, ion beam incidence angle, and processing time, were investigated with regard to the geometry (shape, diameter and height) and density of the fabricated nanopillars. For optimized process conditions, we show that by controlling the ion beam incidence angle (while rotating the sample), the shape (tapered to cylindrical) and average diameter (~75-150 nm) can be tuned and where InP nanopillar heights of ~600 nm were realized. It is shown that by modifying the shapes of the InP nanopillars, broadband anti-reflection can be obtained with average reflectance as low as ~4% in the wavelength range of 400-900 nm.

  • Evaluation of plant and fungal extracts for their potential antigingivitis and anticaries activity.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of biomedicine & biotechnology. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1110-7251 .- 1110-7243. ; 2012
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The link between diet and health has lead to the promotion of functional foods which can enhance health. In this study, the oral health benefits of a number of food homogenates and high molecular mass and low molecular mass fractions were investigated. A comprehensive range of assays were performed to assess the action of these foods on the development of gingivitis and caries using bacterial species associated with these diseases. Both antigingivitis and anticaries effects were investigated by assays examining the prevention of biofilm formation and coaggregation, disruption of preexisting biofilms, and the foods' antibacterial effects. Assays investigating interactions with gingival epithelial cells and cytokine production were carried out to assess the foods' anti- gingivitis properties. Anti-caries properties such as interactions with hydroxyapatite, disruption of signal transduction, and the inhibition of acid production were investigated. The mushroom and chicory homogenates and low molecular mass fractions show promise as anti-caries and anti-gingivitis agents, and further testing and clinical trials will need to be performed to evaluate their true effectiveness in humans.
