  • Sclerosing Aortic and Coronary Arteritis Due to IgG4-Related Disease
  • 2017
  • In: Annals of Thoracic Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 0003-4975. ; 103:6, s. e487-e489
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present the case of a 55-year-old woman admitted for a coronary artery bypass operation because of three-vessel coronary artery disease based on angiographic findings and clinical symptoms. Unexpected intraoperative findings with diffuse tissue thickening of the ascending aorta and coronary arteries indicated an alternate pathogenesis rather than coronary artery atherosclerosis. Histopathologic findings and clinical evaluation could confirm IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD). IgG4-RD is a newly recognized fibroinflammatory condition that can present in a variety of organs and is characterized by common histopathologic features. Low disease awareness among clinicians makes this condition underdiagnosed. © 2017 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons

  • Wenlock metabentonites from Gotland, Sweden: geochemistry, sources and potential as chemostratigraphic markers
  • 1999
  • In: Geological Magazine. - 0016-7568. ; 136:6, s. 661-669
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Two metabentonite suites occur within the Wenlock limestones and marls of Gotland, one within the Slite Formation (M. belophorus to the C. ellesae biozones) and the other in the Mulde Formation (G. nassaM. dubius Biozone). Their geochemical characteristics based on rare-earth element (REE) distributions in apatite crystals separated from the metabentonites suggest origins from three separate volcanic sources. One of these sources has an alkaline affinity, reflected in relatively high levels of Th, Nb and Zr, which suggests that it may have lain over thickening continental crust during the waning stages of the closure of the Tornquist Sea, while the other two represent calc-alkaline magmas. The source of the volcanic ash is placed some 400 km to the southwest of Gotland, on the TornquistTeysseyre Zone, which is the northernmost expression of the Trans-European Suture Zone. Distinctive differences in REE distribution in apatite from these metabentonites should assist in future correlation studies in Wenlock stratigraphy, both within the Baltic region and further afield.

  • Screening of some European medicinal plants for spasmolytic activity on isolated guinea-pig trachea
  • 1995
  • In: International Journal of Pharmacognosy. - 0925-1618. ; 33:4, s. 356-358
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Eight European plants, used traditionally against diseases of the respiratory system, have been assayed for in vitro spasmolytic activity on guinea-pig trachea. The plants were collected or cultivated in the south of Sweden, and both water and 67% methanol extracts of the parts reported to be used in the traditional medicine were prepared and assayed. Five of the species did not show any significant activity at concentrations up to 0.6 mg extract per ml organ bath, the methanol extracts of 2 species (Glechoma hederacea and Hyssopus officinale) showed weak activity, while 0.6 mg/ml of the methanol extract of the aerial parts of Artemisia abrotanum relaxed the tone induced by 0.1 μmol/l carbachol almost (80%) as effectively as 2.2 mmol/l terbutaline.

  • Compliance and findings in a Swedish population screened for colorectal cancer with sigmoidoscopy
  • 2002
  • In: European Journal of Surgical Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-2157 .- 0748-7983. ; 28, s. 827-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the patterns of compliance and the frequency of adenomas and neoplasms in a Swedish population. Methods: In 1996, 2000 men and women born in 1935 or 1936 were selected at random from the population registers of Uppsala and Malmo/Lund. All subjects were invited by mail to participate. In a randomised study design, subjects were either called up by a nurse to schedule the appointment for sigmoidoscopy or instructed to call themselves. At sigmoidoscopy subjects with a cancer, an adenoma (neoplastic polyp) or more than three hyperplastic polyps were scheduled for a complete colonoscopy. Results: Thirty-nine percent (770/1988) of all the invited subjects had a sigmoidoscopy. The participation differed between the two centres, 47% at the Uppsala centre and 30% at the Malmo/Lund centre (P < 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference between the two different invitation groups. In all, 98 subjects (13%) were planned for colonoscopy. Thirty-one (35%) of the subjects having a colonoscopy were women and 57 (65%) were men. Fifty-five true adenomas were found in 46 subjects. All together, six subjects had proximal adenomas. Five adenocarcinomas were diagnosed, all within the reach of the sigmoidoscope. Conclusions: The compliance was lower and the adenomas were fewer than expected. To increase compliance it is necessary with rigorously controlled invitation routines. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Previous Injuries and Persisting Symptoms in Female Soccer Players
  • 1990
  • In: International Journal of Sports Medicine. - : Georg Thieme Verlag KG. - 0172-4622 .- 1439-3964. ; 11:6, s. 489-492
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • One hundred and fifty players in a female senior soccer division, starting up a new season, were examined for past injuries and persisting symptoms. An incidence of 0.18 injury/player/year was found, which is not significantly different from previously reported injury rates for male soccer. Sprains to the lower extremity and shinsplints were the most common previous injuries. Forty-three percent of the players had some kind of persistent symptom as a result of a past injury. Symptoms from previous ankle and knee sprains and from overuse injuries were the most common. Players who had sustained an ankle joint injury were more prone to have persistent symptoms (p < 0.05) if they had persistent mechanical instability. Compared to previous retrospective studies on men's soccer, the women showed a higher rate of previous patellar dislocations. These injuries often caused persistent symptoms. The women showed fewer serious knee injuries. This might depend on a real difference in incidence or is just a reflection of female players ceasing to play soccer after a severe knee injury.

  • Effects of Sex on Early Outcome following Repair of Acute Type A Aortic Dissection : Results from the Nordic Consortium for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection (NORCAAD)
  • 2019
  • In: AORTA. - : Georg Thieme Verlag KG. - 2325-4637. ; 7:1, s. 7-14
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background Female sex is known to have increased perioperative mortality in cardiac surgery. Studies reporting effects of sex on outcome following surgical repair for acute Type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) have been limited by small cohorts of heterogeneous patient populations and have shown diverging results. This study aimed to compare perioperative characteristics, operative management, and postoperative outcome between sexes in a large and well-defined cohort of patients operated for ATAAD. Methods The Nordic Consortium for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection study included patients with surgical repair of ATAAD at eight Nordic centers between January 2005 and December 2014. Independent predictors of 30-day mortality were identified using multivariable logistic regression. Results Females represented 373 (32%) out of 1,154 patients and were significantly older (65 ± 11 vs. 60 ± 12 years, p < 0.001), had lower body mass index (25.8 ± 5.4 vs. 27.2 ± 4.3 kg/m 2, p < 0.001), and had more often a history of hypertension (59% vs. 48%, p = 0.001) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (8% vs. 4%, p = 0.033) compared with males. More females presented with DeBakey class II as compared with males with dissection of the ascending aorta alone (33.4% vs. 23.1%, p = 0.003). Hypothermic cardiac arrest time (28 ± 16 vs. 31 ± 19 minutes, p = 0.026) and operation time (345 ± 133 vs. 374 ± 135 minutes, p < 0.001) were shorter among females. There was no difference between the sexes in unadjusted intraoperative death (9.1% vs. 6.7%, p = 0.17) or 30-day mortality (17.7% vs. 17.4%, p = 0.99). In a multivariable analysis including perioperative factors influencing mortality, no difference was found between females and males in 30-day mortality (odds ratio: 0.92, 95% confidence interval: 0.62-1.38, p = 0.69). Conclusions This study found no association between sex and early mortality following surgery for ATAAD, despite females being older and having more comorbidities, yet also presenting with a less widespread dissection than males.
