  • Strategies for greening the economy in three Nordic countries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Environmental Policy and Governance. - : Wiley. - 1756-932X .- 1756-9338. ; 31:6, s. 592-604
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Green economy is a concept frequently used by governments and international institutions to promote sustainable transformations of the economy. In this study, we explore how the transition towards a green economy is being conceptualised in policy terms in the three Nordic countries Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Comparing these cases, we analyse strategic policy documents on green growth, circular economy, bioeconomy, low-carbon transitions, and sustainable development. While comprehensive national policy strategies on the green economy are lacking, the studied documents display policy approaches that reflect different aspects of a green economic transformations, such as low-carbon developments, promotion of environmental technology sectors, and enhanced circularity. Our findings indicate the presence of a transformative Nordic model for greening the economy, in which the state plays an active role in supporting innovation and technology development, facilitating cooperation among societal actors, and securing social welfare and human wellbeing. It is underpinned by optimism about the opportunity to reconcile economic growth with sustainable development, while more radical beyond growth approaches are strikingly absent, reflecting their marginal roles in the established policy discourse of these countries. Rather, concepts such as circular economy, sharing economy, and sustainable production and consumption are highlighted as central for greening the economy.

  • Anti-PD-1 checkpoint blockade improves the efficacy of a melphalan-based therapy in experimental melanoma
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ejso. - : Elsevier BV. - 0748-7983. ; 47:9, s. 2460-2464
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The induction of adaptive cellular immunity in patients with in-transit melanoma metastasis treated with hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion (ILP) with melphalan has been shown to contribute to the effectiveness of the therapy. Activated CD8(+) T cells appear to be of particular importance for the efficacy of melphalan-based ILP therapy, as observed in both patients and animal models. In this study, we explored the possible synergistic effects of combining melphalan-based therapy with the checkpoint inhibitor anti-PD-1 on tumours in a mouse melanoma model. Methods: A murine vaccination model that utilized melphalan-exposed melanoma cells was used to mimic certain immunological features of melphalan-based ILP. The effects of the vaccine on tumour growth and PD-1 expression on CD8(+) tumour-infiltrating T cells were analyzed. The melphalan-based vaccine was then combined with an anti-PD-1 antibody and tumour growth was assessed. Results: Treatment with melphalan-based therapy significantly induced the expression of PD-1 on CD8(+) tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes. Combination therapy using melphalan-based therapy followed by treatment with PD-1 antibodies significantly reduced early-stage tumour growth relative to mono-therapies and no treatment. Conclusions: This study thus suggests that the addition of PD-1 blockade to melphalan-based therapies, such as ILP, may be therapeutically beneficial. (C) 2021 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

  • Word length effects on pictorial memory encoding in 5- to 7-year-old children: An eye-tracking study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cognitive Development. - : Elsevier BV. - 0885-2014. ; 55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How speech coding is used for visual material is critical to understanding the link between language and memory development. Using eye-tracking, the present study examined whether the number of syllables of pictured objects’ names, monosyllabic versus multisyllabic, predicts looking time at the stimuli-objects in the context of a memory task, thereby indicating verbal recoding. The children’s (N = 39, ages 5–7 years) language ability was also considered. Younger children (5;1–6;3 years) did not appear to sub-vocally recode the verbal labels of visual stimuli during encoding, whereas older children (6;4–7;3 years) who were already attending elementary school looked longer at objects with multisyllabic labels. Notably, it was primarily the less verbally competent among those children who contributed to the effect. Thus, our results demonstrate, for the first time, that young children’s sub-vocal verbal processing when trying to memorize visual stimuli may be contingent upon verbal competence.

  • Digitalization and mobile work in home care nursing – how does it work in everyday practice?
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we explore what digitally supported, mobile work in home care nursing may look like in practice. The results show that there is a large degree of self-determination among the nurses when it comes to organizing their work and that the digital systems can lead to an increased complexity. The diverse environment encountered in home care (as compared to the more standardized hospital environment) accentuates that digitalization has many sides to it and cannot be treated as a generic homogeneous entity regardless of context and task.

  • Exploring Local Initiatives to Improve the Work Environment : A Qualitative Survey in Swedish Home Care Practice
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Home Health Care Management & Practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1084-8223 .- 1552-6739. ; 33:3, s. 154-161
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Home care for the elderly constitutes a large and growing part of the social welfare system. Though, home care work is associated with a number of work environment-related challenges, including an increased risk for injuries, musculoskeletal disorders, high levels of sick leave and staff turnover, as well as stress and high workload, research is sparse. The present study explores local initiatives to improve the work environment initiated by the home care organizations themselves, and asks whether or not these initiatives affected gender equality. A qualitative web survey was sent to Swedish home care organizations, with open questions about change initiatives intended to have a positive effect on the work environment. There is an impressive amount of local work environment-related change initiatives going on. 80 categories of change initiatives were identified in answers from 178 units. However, these change initiatives were seldom evaluated or made accessible to stakeholders outside the organization. Main themes were concerned with work organization, digitalization, and planning, which largely follows trends in society (ie, digitalization, teamwork), rather than the actual needs identified by research (eg, musculoskeletal disorders). Despite apparent gender-related challenges, little of the work was associated with gender equality. The results indicates that there is a huge learning potential as the identified initiatives can serve as inspiration for others. However, to fully take advantage of these type of initiatives, more systematic evaluations are required.
