  • TRANSP modelling of total and local neutron emission on MAST
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 55:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The results of TRANSP simulations of neutron count rate profiles measured by a collimated neutron flux monitor-neutron camera (NC)-for different plasma scenarios on MAST are reported. In addition, the effect of various plasma parameters on neutron emission is studied by means of TRANSP simulation. The fast ion redistribution and losses due to fishbone modes, which belong to a wider category of energetic particle modes, are observed by the NC and modelled in TRANSP.

  • Cited2 Is an Essential Regulator of Adult Hematopoietic Stem Cells
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Cell Stem Cell. - : Elsevier BV. - 1934-5909. ; 5:6, s. 659-665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The regulatory pathways necessary for the maintenance of adult hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) remain poorly defined. By using loss-of-function approaches, we report a selective and cell-autonomous requirement for the p300/CBP-binding transcriptional coactivator Cited2 in adult HSC maintenance. Conditional deletion of Cited2 in the adult mouse results in loss of HSCs causing multilineage bone marrow failure and increased lethality. In contrast, conditional ablation of Cited2 after lineage specification in lymphoid and myeloid lineages has no impact on the maintenance of these lineages. Additional deletion of Ink4a/Arf (encoding p16Ink4a and p19Arf) or Trp53 (encoding p53, a downstream target of p19Arf) in a Cited2-deficient background restores HSC functionality and rescues mice from bone marrow failure. Furthermore, we show that the critical role of Cited2 in primitive hematopoietic cells is conserved in humans. Taken together, our studies provide genetic evidence that Cited2 selectively maintains adult HSC functions, at least in part, via Ink4a/Arf and Trp53.

  • Shallow soils are warmer under trees and tall shrubs across Arctic and Boreal ecosystems
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Environmental Research Letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 1748-9326. ; 16:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soils are warming as air temperatures rise across the Arctic and Boreal region concurrent with the expansion of tall-statured shrubs and trees in the tundra. Changes in vegetation structure and function are expected to alter soil thermal regimes, thereby modifying climate feedbacks related to permafrost thaw and carbon cycling. However, current understanding of vegetation impacts on soil temperature is limited to local or regional scales and lacks the generality necessary to predict soil warming and permafrost stability on a pan-Arctic scale. Here we synthesize shallow soil and air temperature observations with broad spatial and temporal coverage collected across 106 sites representing nine different vegetation types in the permafrost region. We showed ecosystems with tall-statured shrubs and trees (>40 cm) have warmer shallow soils than those with short-statured tundra vegetation when normalized to a constant air temperature. In tree and tall shrub vegetation types, cooler temperatures in the warm season do not lead to cooler mean annual soil temperature indicating that ground thermal regimes in the cold-season rather than the warm-season are most critical for predicting soil warming in ecosystems underlain by permafrost. Our results suggest that the expansion of tall shrubs and trees into tundra regions can amplify shallow soil warming, and could increase the potential for increased seasonal thaw depth and increase soil carbon cycling rates and lead to increased carbon dioxide loss and further permafrost thaw.

  • Global and National Burden of Diseases and Injuries Among Children and Adolescents Between 1990 and 2013 : Findings From the Global Burden of Disease 2013 Study.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: JAMA pediatrics. - : American Medical Association (AMA). - 2168-6203 .- 2168-6211. ; 170:3, s. 267-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IMPORTANCE: The literature focuses on mortality among children younger than 5 years. Comparable information on nonfatal health outcomes among these children and the fatal and nonfatal burden of diseases and injuries among older children and adolescents is scarce.OBJECTIVE: To determine levels and trends in the fatal and nonfatal burden of diseases and injuries among younger children (aged <5 years), older children (aged 5-9 years), and adolescents (aged 10-19 years) between 1990 and 2013 in 188 countries from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2013 study.EVIDENCE REVIEW: Data from vital registration, verbal autopsy studies, maternal and child death surveillance, and other sources covering 14 244 site-years (ie, years of cause of death data by geography) from 1980 through 2013 were used to estimate cause-specific mortality. Data from 35 620 epidemiological sources were used to estimate the prevalence of the diseases and sequelae in the GBD 2013 study. Cause-specific mortality for most causes was estimated using the Cause of Death Ensemble Model strategy. For some infectious diseases (eg, HIV infection/AIDS, measles, hepatitis B) where the disease process is complex or the cause of death data were insufficient or unavailable, we used natural history models. For most nonfatal health outcomes, DisMod-MR 2.0, a Bayesian metaregression tool, was used to meta-analyze the epidemiological data to generate prevalence estimates.FINDINGS: Of the 7.7 (95% uncertainty interval [UI], 7.4-8.1) million deaths among children and adolescents globally in 2013, 6.28 million occurred among younger children, 0.48 million among older children, and 0.97 million among adolescents. In 2013, the leading causes of death were lower respiratory tract infections among younger children (905 059 deaths; 95% UI, 810 304-998 125), diarrheal diseases among older children (38 325 deaths; 95% UI, 30 365-47 678), and road injuries among adolescents (115 186 deaths; 95% UI, 105 185-124 870). Iron deficiency anemia was the leading cause of years lived with disability among children and adolescents, affecting 619 (95% UI, 618-621) million in 2013. Large between-country variations exist in mortality from leading causes among children and adolescents. Countries with rapid declines in all-cause mortality between 1990 and 2013 also experienced large declines in most leading causes of death, whereas countries with the slowest declines had stagnant or increasing trends in the leading causes of death. In 2013, Nigeria had a 12% global share of deaths from lower respiratory tract infections and a 38% global share of deaths from malaria. India had 33% of the world's deaths from neonatal encephalopathy. Half of the world's diarrheal deaths among children and adolescents occurred in just 5 countries: India, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Ethiopia.CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Understanding the levels and trends of the leading causes of death and disability among children and adolescents is critical to guide investment and inform policies. Monitoring these trends over time is also key to understanding where interventions are having an impact. Proven interventions exist to prevent or treat the leading causes of unnecessary death and disability among children and adolescents. The findings presented here show that these are underused and give guidance to policy makers in countries where more attention is needed.

  • ‘What’s in a name?’ ‘No more than when it's mine own’. Evidence from auditory oddball distraction
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Acta Psychologica. - : Elsevier BV. - 0001-6918 .- 1873-6297. ; 150, s. 161-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research of the distractor value of hearing the own name has shown that this self-referring stimulus captures attention in an involuntary fashion and create distraction. The behavioral studies are few and the outcomes are not always clear cut. In this study the distraction by own name compared to a control name was investigated by using a cross-modal oddball task in two experiments. In the first experiment, thirty-nine participants were conducting a computerized categorization task while exposed to, to-be ignored own and matched control names (controlling for familiarity, gender and number of syllables) as unexpected auditory deviant stimulus (12.5% trials for each name category) and a sine wave tone as a standard stimulus (75% of the trials). In the second experiment, another group of thirty-nine participants completed the same task but with the additional deviant stimulus of an irrelevant word added (10% trials for each deviant type and 70% trials with the standard stimulus). Results showed deviant distraction by exposure to both the irrelevant word, own and the control name compared to the standard tone but no differences were found showing that the own name captured attention and distracted the participants more than an irrelevant word or a control name. The results elucidate the role of the own name as a potent auditory distractor and possible limitations with its theoretical significance for general theories of attention are discussed.

  • Cause and manner of death and phase of the blood alcohol curve
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Forensic Science International. - : Elsevier. - 0379-0738 .- 1872-6283. ; 244, s. 306-312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a large number of forensic autopsies (N = 28,184) the concentrations of ethanol in femoral blood and bladder urine were determined and the urine-to-blood concentration ratios of ethanol were calculated. Based on the differences in ethanol concentration between urine and blood, the deaths were classified as having occurred during the absorptive, the peak or the post-absorptive phase of the blood-alcohol curve. Most people died in the post-absorptive phase, N = 24,223 (86%), whereas 1538 individuals (5.5%) were still absorbing alcohol and 2423 (8.6%) were at or close to the peak BAC at time of death. Both blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) and urine-alcohol concentration (UAC) were significantly higher in the post-absorptive phase (p less than 0.001). The proportions of people dying in the absorptive and peak phases increased with advancing age. The cause of death (CoD) and manner of death (MoD) according to death certificates were compared with phase of the blood-alcohol curve using amultinomial regression model with and without making adjustment for possible effects of age, gender and BAC. The relative risk (RR) and relative risk ratios (RRR) showed some associations between CoD and phase of the blood-alcohol curve. Undetermined MoD was significantly higher in the absorptive phase compared with the post-absorptive phase (RRR = 2.12). Deaths related to esophagus, stomach and duodenum (RRR = 2.04) and alcoholic liver diseases (RRR = 1.85) were significantly higher at or close to peak phase compared to the post-absorptive phase. Road-traffic fatalities were more prevalent in the peak BAC phase (RRR = 1.33) and deaths by accidental falls were less in the absorptive phase (RRR = 0.58) compared with the post-absorptive phase. The phase of alcohol intoxication seems relevant to consider by forensic experts when alcohol-related deaths are investigated.
