  • Underlying Event measurements in pp collisions at root s=0.9 and 7 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479. ; :7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present measurements of Underlying Event observables in pp collisions at root s = 0 : 9 and 7 TeV. The analysis is performed as a function of the highest charged-particle transverse momentum p(T),L-T in the event. Different regions are defined with respect to the azimuthal direction of the leading (highest transverse momentum) track: Toward, Transverse and Away. The Toward and Away regions collect the fragmentation products of the hardest partonic interaction. The Transverse region is expected to be most sensitive to the Underlying Event activity. The study is performed with charged particles above three different p(T) thresholds: 0.15, 0.5 and 1.0 GeV/c. In the Transverse region we observe an increase in the multiplicity of a factor 2-3 between the lower and higher collision energies, depending on the track p(T) threshold considered. Data are compared to PYTHIA 6.4, PYTHIA 8.1 and PHOJET. On average, all models considered underestimate the multiplicity and summed p(T) in the Transverse region by about 10-30%.

  • T Cell Modulation of Intimal Thickening After Vascular Injury. The Bimodal Role of IFN-{gamma} in Immune Deficiency.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology. - 1524-4636. ; 25:Oct 13, s. 2528-2534
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background - Immune deficiency results in exuberant intimal thickening after arterial injury. The mechanisms involved are not well defined. We investigated the role of T cells and IFN-gamma in the response to injury in normal and immune-deficient Rag-1KO mice. Methods and Results - Carotid arterial injury was induced in wild-type (WT), Rag-1KO mice, and Rag-1KO mice reconstituted with T cell-enriched splenocytes. The exuberant intimal thickening in Rag-1KO mice compared with WT mice 21 days after injury was reduced by T cell transfer (P < 0.01). Exogenous IFN-gamma starting on the day of injury inhibited intimal thickening in Rag-1KO mice. However, antibody neutralization of endogenous IFN-gamma in Rag-1KO mice starting 7 days after injury decreased intimal thickening, indicating that late presence of IFN-gamma promoted intimal thickening in Rag-1KO mice. Results further suggest that the effect of late IFN-gamma in Rag-1KO mice is mediated in part by increased IRF-1 and iNOS expression, coupled with low SOCS1 expression. Conclusion - T cells inhibit intimal thickening in the early stages of the response to injury through basal IFN-gamma secretion. In the Rag-1KO mice, late IFN-gamma expression promotes intimal thickening. These findings add novel insight to conditions of immune deficiency that affect intimal thickening.

  • Multicore-Fiber-Enabled WSDM Optical Access Network With Centralized Carrier Delivery and RSOA-Based Adaptive Modulation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE PHOTONICS JOURNAL. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1943-0655. ; 7:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a wavelength-space division multiplexing (WSDM) optical access network architecture with centralized optical carrier delivery utilizing multicore fibers (MCFs) and adaptive modulation based on reflective semiconductor amplifier (RSOA). In our experiment, five of the outer cores are used for undirectional downstream (DS) transmission only, whereas the remaining outer core is utilized as a dedicated channel to transmit upstream (US) signals. Optical carriers for US are delivered from the optical line terminal (OLT) to the optical network unit (ONU) via the inner core and then transmitted back to the OLT after amplification and modulation by the RSOA in the colorless ONU side. The mobile backhaul (MB) service is also supported by the inner core. Wavelengths used in US transmission should be different from that of the MB in order to avoid the Rayleigh backscattering effect in bidirectional transmission. With quadrature phase-shift keying-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (QPSK-OFDM) modulation format, the aggregation DS capacity reaches 250 Gb/s using five outer cores and ten wavelengths, and it can be further scaled to 1 Tb/s using 20 wavelengths modulated with 16 QAM-OFDM. For US transmission, 2.5 Gb/s QPSK-OFDM transmission can be achieved just using a low-bandwidth RSOA, and adaptive modulation is applied to the RSOA to further enhance the US data rate to 3.12 Gb/s. As an emulation of high-speed MB transmission, 48 Gb/s inphase and quadrature (IQ) modulated popularization division multiplexing (PDM)-QPSK signal is transmitted in the inner core of MCF and coherently detected in the OLT side. Both DS and US optical signals exhibit acceptable performance with sufficient power budget.

  • Lattice Oxygen Activation through Deep Oxidation of Co4N by Jahn–Teller–Active Dopants for Improved Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 63:33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Triggering the lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism is crucial for improving oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, because it could bypass the scaling relation limitation associated with the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism through the direct formation of oxygen–oxygen bond. High-valence transition metal sites are favorable for activating the lattice oxygen, but the deep oxidation of pre-catalysts suffers from a high thermodynamic barrier. Here, taking advantage of the Jahn–Teller (J–T) distortion induced structural instability, we incorporate high-spin Mn3+ (  ) dopant into Co4N. Mn dopants enable a surface structural transformation from Co4N to CoOOH, and finally to CoO2, as observed by various in situ spectroscopic investigations. Furthermore, the reconstructed surface on Mn-doped Co4N triggers the lattice oxygen activation, as evidenced experimentally by pH-dependent OER, tetramethylammonium cation adsorption and online electrochemical mass spectrometry measurements of 18O-labelled catalysts. In general, this work not only offers the introducing J–T effect approach to regulate the structural transition, but also provides an understanding about the influence of the catalyst's electronic configuration on determining the reaction route, which may inspire the design of more efficient catalysts with activated lattice oxygen.

  • Silicon Affects Plant Stoichiometry and Accumulation of C, N, and P in Grasslands
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Plant Science. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-462X. ; 11, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Silicon (Si) plays an important role in improving soil nutrient availability and plant carbon (C) accumulation and may therefore impact the biogeochemical cycles of C, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in terrestrial ecosystems profoundly. However, research on this process in grassland ecosystems is scarce, despite the fact that these ecosystems are one of the most significant accumulators of biogenic Si (BSi). In this study, we collected the aboveground parts of four widespread grasses and soil profile samples in northern China and assessed the correlations between Si concentrations and stoichiometry and accumulation of C, N, and P in grasses at the landscape scale. Our results showed that Si concentrations in plants were significantly negatively correlated (p< 0.01) with associated C concentrations. There was no significant correlation between Si and N concentrations. It is worth noting that since the Si concentration increased, the P concentration increased from less than 0.10% to more than 0.20% and therefore C:P and N:P ratios decreased concomitantly. Besides, the soil noncrystalline Si played more important role in C, N, and P accumulation than other environmental factors (e.g., MAT, MAP, and altitude). These findings indicate that Si may facilitate grasses in adjusting the utilization of nutrients (C, N, and P) and may particularly alleviate P deficiency in grasslands. We conclude that Si positively alters the concentrations and accumulation of C, N, and P likely resulting in the variation of ecological stoichiometry in both vegetation and litter decomposition in soils. This study further suggests that the physiological function of Si is an important but overlooked factor in influencing biogeochemical cycles of C and P in grassland ecosystems.

  • ISIS 449884 Injection Add-On to Metformin in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Phase II Clinical Study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: DIABETES THERAPY. - 1869-6953 .- 1869-6961.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: ISIS 449884, a 2 '-O-methoxyethyl antisense oligonucleotide that targets the glucagon receptor (GCGR), has demonstrated an ability to reduce hepatic glucose output and lower the blood glucose level. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of ISIS 449884 as an add-on to metformin in a population of Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Method: This was a multicenter, placebo-controlled (2:1), randomized, double-blind, parallel-enrollment, multiple-dose phase II study in Chinese patients with T2DM. A total of 90 patients who were uncontrolled by stable metformin monotherapy were randomized into three cohorts. Thirty subjects were enrolled in each cohort and received injections of ISIS 449884 (50 mg or 60 mg weekly or 100 mg every other week) or a corresponding volume of placebo (0.25 mL and 0.3 mL weekly or 0.5 mL every other week) subcutaneously in a 2:1 ratio for 16 weeks. Results: The primary efficacy endpoint was analyzed in 88 subjects (ISIS 449884, n = 59; placebo, n = 29). The corrected LS mean change from baseline in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) at week 17 in the pooled ISIS 449884 treatment group was - 1.31% (95% CI - 1.66%, - 0.96%), and that in the pooled placebo group was 0.15% (95% CI - 0.37%, 0.66%). The LS mean difference between the two groups was - 1.46% (95% CI - 1.92%, - 1.00%, P < 0.001). Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) occurred in 53/60 subjects (88.3%) and 25/30 subjects (83.3%) in the pooled ISIS 449884 treatment group and the pooled placebo group, respectively, with similar incidences. Drug-related TEAEs occurred in 41/60 subjects (68.3%) and 9/30 subjects (30.0%), respectively. TEAEs of grade 3 or higher occurred in 5/60 (8.3%) subjects and 2/30 (6.7%) subjects, respectively, and none of them were drug related. Conclusions: The ISIS 449884 injection add-on to metformin significantly reduced HbA1c in patients with T2DM uncontrolled by stable metformin monotherapy and showed an acceptable benefit/risk profile.

  • Oscillations of sub-membrane ATP in glucose-stimulated beta cells depend on negative feedback from Ca2
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Diabetologia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0012-186X .- 1432-0428. ; 56:7, s. 1577-1586
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ATP links changes in glucose metabolism to electrical activity, Ca2+ signalling and insulin secretion in pancreatic beta cells. There is evidence that beta cell metabolism oscillates, but little is known about ATP dynamics at the plasma membrane, where regulation of ion channels and exocytosis occur. The sub-plasma-membrane ATP concentration ([ATP](pm)) was recorded in beta cells in intact mouse and human islets using total internal reflection microscopy and the fluorescent reporter Perceval. Glucose dose-dependently increased [ATP](pm) with half-maximal and maximal effects at 5.2 and 9 mmol/l, respectively. Additional elevations of glucose to 11 to 20 mmol/l promoted pronounced [ATP](pm) oscillations that were synchronised between neighbouring beta cells. [ATP](pm) increased further and the oscillations disappeared when voltage-dependent Ca2+ influx was prevented. In contrast, K+-depolarisation induced prompt lowering of [ATP](pm). Simultaneous recordings of [ATP](pm) and the sub-plasma-membrane Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+](pm)) during the early glucose-induced response revealed that the initial [ATP](pm) elevation preceded, and was temporarily interrupted by the rise of [Ca2+](pm). During subsequent glucose-induced oscillations, the increases of [Ca2+](pm) correlated with lowering of [ATP](pm). In beta cells, glucose promotes pronounced oscillations of [ATP](pm), which depend on negative feedback from Ca2+ (.) The bidirectional interplay between these messengers in the sub-membrane space generates the metabolic and ionic oscillations that underlie pulsatile insulin secretion.

  • "Mix-Then-On-Demand-Complex" : In Situ Cascade Anionization and Complexation of Graphene Oxide for High-Performance Nanofiltration Membranes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 15:3, s. 4440-4449
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Assembling two-dimensional (2D) materials by polyelectrolyte often suffers from inhomogeneous microstructures due to the conventional mixing-and-simultaneous-complexation procedure (mix-and-complex) in aqueous solution. Herein a mix-then-on-demand-complex concept via on-demand in situ cascade anionization and ionic complexation of 2D materials is raised that drastically improves structural order in 2D assemblies, as exemplified by classical graphene oxide (GO)-based ultrathin membranes. Specifically, in dimethyl sulfoxide, the carboxylic acid-functionalized GO sheets (COOH-GOs) were mixed evenly with a cationic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and upon filtration formed a well-ordered layered composite membrane with homogeneous distribution of PIL chains in it; next, whenever needed, it was alkali-treated to convert COOH-GO in situ into its anionized state COO--GO that immediately complexed ionically with the surrounding cationic PIL chains. This mix-then-on-demand-complex concept separates the ionic complexation of GO and polyelectrolytes from their mixing step. By synergistically combining the PIL-induced hydrophobic confinement effect and supramolecular interactions, the as-fabricated nanofiltration membranes carry interface transport nanochannels between GO and PIL, reaching a high water permeability of 96.38 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) at a maintained excellent dye rejection 99.79% for 150 h, exceeding the state-of-the-art GO-based hybrid membranes. The molecular dynamics simulations support the experimental data, confirming the interface spacing between GO and PIL as the water transport channels.

  • High-Yield Uniform Synthesis and Microstructure-Determination of Rice-Shaped Silver Nanocrystals
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5126 .- 0002-7863. ; 131:17, s. 6068-6068
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-yield uniform silver nanorices were synthesized by a facile polyol process without the introduction of shape-selected seeds. Nanorices exhibit two plasmon resonance peaks in the visible and near-infrared regions respectively due to their anisotropy. XRD patterns demonstrated the HCP phase coexists with the FCC phase in nanorices. The novel structure of nanorices was characterized by TEM study which shows that the intergrowth of FCC and a small amount of HCP phase, nanoscale FCC (111) twinning structure, and multimodulated structures formed by a complicated stacking sequence along the long axis direction. The correlation between morphology and microstructure is discussed.
