    • The present study concerns the development of a computerized tool targeting housing accessibility issues. A user-centered approach involving professionals from the housing sector and senior citizens from four European countries resulted in a fully functional prototype of a mobile application (app) including an apartment database. The app raises awareness on housing accessibility and has the potential to support decision making and strengthen all citizens regardless of functional capacity to be more active in their endeavors for a satisfying housing solution. Further refinements and additional features are needed to enhance the potential benefits; they include addressing potential challenges facing senior citizens, developing interactive features that allow users to provide input and adapting to different national contexts to make the app applicable for the European market.

    • GaP < 111 > B nanowires are dominated by (111) twins orthogonal to the growth direction and show well-developed {111} side-facets. Based on this, a 3D-model has been constructed with a cross-section of an octahedron used as a building block. The twins can be of ortho- or para type i.e. by 60 degrees about the growth axis or 180 degrees in the twin plane. The segment thickness variation follows an exponential distribution with a clear dependence oil growth ternperature. Multislice simulations show different features of the twin types that are useful for further characterisation.

    • The fabrication of core-shell structures is crucial for many nanowire device concepts. For the proper tailoring of their electronic properties, control of structural parameters such as shape, size, diameter of core and shell, their chemical composition, and information on their strain fields is mandatory. Using synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies and finite element simulations, we determined the chemical composition, dimensions, and strain distribution for series of InAs/InAsP core-shell wires grown on Si(111) with systematically varied growth parameters. In particular we detect initiation of plastic relaxation of these structures with increasing shell thickness and/or increasing phosphorus content. We establish a phase diagram, defining the region of parameters leading to pseudomorphic nanowire growth. This is important to avoid extended defects which are detrimental for their electronic properties.
