    • The GBAR project (Gravitational Behaviour of Anti hydrogen at Rest) at CERN, aims to measure the free fall acceleration of ultracold neutral anti hydrogen atoms in the terrestrial gravitational field. The experiment consists preparing anti hydrogen ions (one antiproton and two positrons) and sympathetically cooling them with Be (+) ions to less than 10 mu K. The ultracold ions will then be photo-ionized just above threshold, and the free fall time over a known distance measured. We will describe the project, the accuracy that can be reached by standard techniques, and discuss a possible improvement to reduce the vertical velocity spread.

  • Primary Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death With Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Therapy in Patients With Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy

    • Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy remains a corner stone of sudden cardiac death (SCD) prevention in patients with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). We aimed to assess predictors of appropriate ICD therapies in the Scandinavian cohort of ARVC patients who received ICD for primary prevention of SCD. Study group comprised of 79 definite ARVC patients by 2010 Task Force criteria (60% male, age at ICD implant 39 +/- 14 years) who were enrolled in the Nordic ARVC Registry and received an ICD for primary SCD prevention. The primary end point of appropriate ICD shock or death from any cause was assessed and compared with 137 definite ARVC patients who received ICD for secondary SCD prevention (74% male, age at ICD implant 42 +/- 15 years). In the study group, 38% were amp;lt;= 35 years of age at baseline, 25% had non-sustained ventricular tachycardia, and 29% had syncope at baseline. Major repolarization abnormality (hazard ratio = 4.00, 95% confidence interval 1.30 to 12.30, p = 0.015) and age amp;lt;= 35 years (hazard ratio = 4.21, 95% confidence interval 1.49 to 11.85, p = 0.001) independently predicted the primary end point. The outcome did not differ between the primary prevention patients with either of these risk factors and the secondary prevention cohort (2% to 4% annual event rate) whereas patients without risk factors did not have any appropriate ICD shocks during follow-up. In conclusion, young age at ARVC diagnosis and major repolarization abnormality independently predict ICD shocks or death in the primary prevention ICD recipients and associated with the event rate similar to the one observed in the secondary prevention cohort. Our data indicate the benefit of ICD for primary prevention in patients with any of these risk factors. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    • Most lifestyle-related chronic diseases are characterized by low-grade systemic inflammation and insulin resistance. Excessive tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) concentrations have been implicated in the development of insulin resistance, but direct evidence in humans is lacking. Here, we demonstrate that TNF-α infusion in healthy humans induces insulin resistance in skeletal muscle, without effect on endogenous glucose production, as estimated by a combined euglycemic insulin clamp and stable isotope tracer method. TNF-α directly impairs glucose uptake and metabolism by altering insulin signal transduction. TNF-α infusion increases phosphorylation of p70 S6 kinase, extracellular signal–regulated kinase-1/2, and c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase, concomitant with increased serine and reduced tyrosine phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate-1. These signaling effects are associated with impaired phosphorylation of Akt substrate 160, the most proximal step identified in the canonical insulin signaling cascade regulating GLUT4 translocation and glucose uptake. Thus, excessive concentrations of TNF-α negatively regulate insulin signaling and whole-body glucose uptake in humans. Our results provide a molecular link between low-grade systemic inflammation and the metabolic syndrome.

    • We report the observation, by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), of island formation on SIC during high temperature deposition and annealing of thin Ni films. Ni films with a nominal thickness of 2.5 monolayers were sputter deposited onto H-2-etched single crystal 6H-SiC (0001) substrates heated to 600 degreesC in an ultrahigh vacuum STM system. After the substrates were annealed to 800-1000 degreesC, island formation was observed by STM. The islands were 0.1-0.5 mum in diameter, similar to 30 nm high, and separated by similar to2 mum from each other, with an exceptionally flat top with a peculiar 'stitched' surface structure. A second type of island, similar to1.5 mum in diameter, similar to 10 nm high, and separated by similar to 10 mum from each other, was observed by ex situ AFM and SEM. Microspot AES showed that the first islands are composed of Ni and C, while the second islands are composed of Ni, C, and Si. AES lineshape studies showed that the carbon in both types of islands is graphitically bound as opposed to the carbon in the substrate which is carbidically bound. From comparisons to literature, we believe that the first islands are a new type of graphite intercalation compound. An indexing of Ni on the top graphite sheets is presented for each anneal temperature.

  • MHC diversity and female age underpin reproductive success in an Australian icon; the Tasmanian Devil

    • Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD), a highly contagious cancer, has decimated Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) numbers in the wild. To ensure its long-term survival, a captive breeding program was implemented but has not been as successful as envisaged at its launch in 2005. We therefore investigated the reproductive success of 65 captive devil pair combinations, of which 35 produced offspring (successful pairs) whereas the remaining 30 pairs, despite being observed mating, produced no offspring (unsuccessful pairs). The devils were screened at six MHC Class I-linked microsatellite loci. Our analyses revealed that younger females had a higher probability of being successful than older females. In the successful pairs we also observed a higher difference in total number of heterozygous loci, i.e. when one devil had a high total number of heterozygous loci, its partner had low numbers. Our results therefore suggest that devil reproductive success is subject to disruptive MHC selection, which to our knowledge has never been recorded in any vertebrate. In order to enhance the success of the captive breeding program the results from the present study show the importance of using young (2-year old) females as well as subjecting the devils to MHC genotyping.

  • Diagnostic of fast-ion energy spectra and densities in magnetized plasmas

    • The measurement of the energy spectra and densities of alpha-particles and other fast ions are part of the ITER measurement requirements, highlighting the importance of energy-resolved energetic-particle measurements for the mission of ITER. However, it has been found in recent years that the velocity-space interrogation regions of the foreseen energetic-particle diagnostics do not allow these measurements directly. We will demonstrate this for gamma-ray spectroscopy (GRS), collective Thomson scattering (CTS), neutron emission spectroscopy and fast-ion D-alpha spectroscopy by invoking energy and momentum conservation in each case, highlighting analogies and differences between the different diagnostic velocity-space sensitivities. Nevertheless, energy spectra and densities can be inferred by velocity-space tomography which we demonstrate using measurements at JET and ASDEX Upgrade. The measured energy spectra agree well with corresponding simulations. At ITER, alpha-particle energy spectra and densities can be inferred for energies larger than 1.7 MeV by velocity-space tomography based on GRS and CTS. Further, assuming isotropy of the alpha-particles in velocity space, their energy spectra and densities can be inferred by 1D inversion of spectral single-detector measurements down to about 300 keV by CTS. The alpha-particle density can also be found by fitting a model to the CTS measurements assuming the alpha-particle distribution to be an isotropic slowing-down distribution.

    • We demonstrate the measurement of a 2D MeV-range ion velocity distribution function by velocity-space tomography at JET. Deuterium ions were accelerated into the MeV-range by third harmonic ion cyclotron resonance heating. We made measurements with three neutron emission spectrometers and a high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometer detecting the gamma-rays released in two reactions. The tomographic inversion based on these five spectra is in excellent agreement with numerical simulations with the ASCOT-RFOF and the SPOT-RFOF codes. The length of the measured fast-ion tail corroborates the prediction that very few particles are accelerated above 2 MeV due to the weak wave-particle interaction at higher energies.
