  • Fire-retardant, self-extinguishing triboelectric nanogenerators
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nano Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 2211-2855. ; 59, s. 336-345
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of highly sensitive sensors and power generators that could function efficiently in extreme temperatures and contact with fire can be lifesaving but challenging to accomplish. Herein, we report, for the first time, a fire-retardant and self-extinguishing triboelectric nanogenerator (FRTENG), which can be utilized as a motion sensor and/or power generator in occupations such as oil drilling, firefighting or working in extreme temperature environments with flammable and combustible materials. The device takes advantage of the excellent thermal properties of carbon derived from resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogel whose electrical, mechanical and triboelectric properties have been improved via the introduction of Polyacrylonitrile nanofibers and graphene oxide nanosheets. This FRTENG is not flammable even after 90 s of trying, whereas conventional triboelectric materials were entirely consumed by fire under the same conditions. The developed device shows exceptional charge transfer characteristics, leading to a potential difference up to 80 V and a current density up to 25 mu A/m(2). When integrated into firefighter's shoes, the FRTENG is able to discern the movements of a firefighter in hazardous situations, while providing the high thermal stability missing in conventional TENGs. The fire-retardant and self-extinguishing characteristics offered by the FRTENG makes it a path-breaking device for lifesaving wearable applications.

  • Practical Guide to Measuring Wetland Carbon Pools and Fluxes
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Wetlands (Wilmington, N.C.). - : SPRINGER. - 0277-5212 .- 1943-6246. ; 43:8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wetlands cover a small portion of the world, but have disproportionate influence on global carbon (C) sequestration, carbon dioxide and methane emissions, and aquatic C fluxes. However, the underlying biogeochemical processes that affect wetland C pools and fluxes are complex and dynamic, making measurements of wetland C challenging. Over decades of research, many observational, experimental, and analytical approaches have been developed to understand and quantify pools and fluxes of wetland C. Sampling approaches range in their representation of wetland C from short to long timeframes and local to landscape spatial scales. This review summarizes common and cutting-edge methodological approaches for quantifying wetland C pools and fluxes. We first define each of the major C pools and fluxes and provide rationale for their importance to wetland C dynamics. For each approach, we clarify what component of wetland C is measured and its spatial and temporal representativeness and constraints. We describe practical considerations for each approach, such as where and when an approach is typically used, who can conduct the measurements (expertise, training requirements), and how approaches are conducted, including considerations on equipment complexity and costs. Finally, we review key covariates and ancillary measurements that enhance the interpretation of findings and facilitate model development. The protocols that we describe to measure soil, water, vegetation, and gases are also relevant for related disciplines such as ecology. Improved quality and consistency of data collection and reporting across studies will help reduce global uncertainties and develop management strategies to use wetlands as nature-based climate solutions.

  • Development of a European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) questionnaire module to be used in quality of life assessments in head and neck cancer patients. EORTC Quality of Life Study Group
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1651-226X .- 0284-186X. ; 33:8, s. 879-885
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A head and neck cancer specific questionnaire module designed to be used in quality of life assessments before, during, and after radiotherapy and surgery, with or without combinations with chemotherapy has been developed in accordance with guidelines given by the EORTC Quality of Life Study Group. Relevant issues were generated by means of literature search, and interviews with specialists and patients. Pre-testing of a preliminary questionnaire module was performed in patients from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, United Kingdom and French-speaking Belgium. The resulting head and neck cancer module, the EORTC QLQ-H&N37, includes 37 items concerning disease and treatment related symptoms, social function and sexuality. By using a combination of the general EORTC QLQ-C30 and the EORTC QLQ-H&N37, health-related quality of life measurements may be compared between studies in different cancer populations, and still be sensitive to changes in the target population.

  • Hypersaline tidal flats as important "blue carbon" systems : a case study from three ecosystems
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Biogeosciences. - : COPERNICUS GESELLSCHAFT MBH. - 1726-4170 .- 1726-4189. ; 18:8, s. 2527-2538
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hypersaline tidal flats (HTFs) are coastal ecosystems with freshwater deficits often occurring in arid or semiarid regions near mangrove supratidal zones with no major fluvial contributions. Here, we estimate that organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were buried at rates averaging 21 (+/- 6), 1.7 (+/- 0.3) and 1.4 (+/- 0.3) gm(-2) yr(-1), respectively, during the previous century in three contrasting HTF systems, one in Brazil (eutrophic) and two in Australia (oligotrophic). Although these rates are lower than those from nearby mangrove, saltmarsh and seagrass systems, the importance of HTFs as sinks for OC, TN and TP may be significant given their extensive coverage. Despite the measured short-term variability between net air-saltpan CO2 influx and emission estimates found during the dry and wet season in the Brazilian HTF, the only site with seasonal CO2 flux measurements, the OC sedimentary profiles over several decades suggest efficient OC burial at all sites. Indeed, the stable isotopes of OC and TN (delta C-13 and delta N-1(5)) along with C : N ratios show that microphytobenthos are the major source of the buried OC in these HTFs. Our findings highlight a previously unquantified carbon as well as a nutrient sink and suggest that coastal HTF ecosystems could be included in the emerging blue carbon framework.

  • A theory-guided deep-learning method for predicting power generation of multi-region photovoltaic plants
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Engineering applications of artificial intelligence. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0952-1976 .- 1873-6769. ; 118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, clean solar energy has aroused wide attention due to its excellent potential for electricity production. A highly accurate prediction of photovoltaic power generation (PVPG) is the basis of the production and transmission of electricity. However, the current works neglect the regional correlation characteristics of PVPG and few studies propose an effective framework by incorporating prior knowledge for more physically reasonable results. In this work, a hybrid deep learning framework is proposed for simultaneously capturing the spatial correlations among different regions and temporal dependency patterns with various importance. The scientific theory and domain knowledge are incorporated into the deep learning model to make the predicted results possess physical reasonability. Subsequently, the theory-guided and attention-based CNN-LSTM (TG-A-CNN-LSTM) is constructed for PVPG prediction. In the training process, data mismatch and boundary constraint are incorporated into the loss function, and the positive constraint is utilized to restrict the output of the model. After receiving the parameters of the neural network, a TG-A-CNN-LSTM model, whose predicted results obey the physical law, is constructed. A real energy system in five regions is used to verify the accuracy of the proposed model. The predicted results indicate that TG-A-CNN-LSTM can achieve higher precision of PVPG prediction than other prediction models, with RMSE being 11.07, MAE being 4.98, and R2 being 0.94, respectively. Moreover, the performance of prediction models with sparse data is tested to illustrate the stability and robustness of TG-A-CNN-LSTM.

  • Magnetism of exposed and Co-capped Fe nanoparticles
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 220:1, s. 25-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of capping a dilute assembly of nanoscale mass-selected Fe clusters with a Co thin film has been studied using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The clusters, containing around 400 atoms, were deposited in situ from a gas-aggregation source onto highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. The exposed clusters possess magnetic moments that are enhanced compared to the bulk, by around 4% for m(spin) and around 75% for m(orb). In addition, a surface core level shifted component is observed in the L-3.2 XMCD spectrum. Upon adding the Co layer, the surface component disappears, m(orb) is decreased for the Fe clusters, and m(spin) increases. The exposed clusters are magnetically isotropic but a strong in-plans anisotropy is observed after depositing the Co overlayer. We attribute this to the shape of the Co islands in which the Fe clusters are embedded.

  • Size dependence of the magnetic moments of exposed nanoscale iron particles
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - 0304-8853 .- 1873-4766. ; 231:1, s. 113-119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnetic moments in exposed, mass-selected, nanoscale Fe clusters in the size range 1.89-2.20 nm (300-475 atoms), deposited onto graphic in situ have been measured by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The smallest clusters possess moments that are enhanced by around 4% for m(spin) and 80% for m(orb) and decrease towards the bulk value with increasing size. The larger clusters show an in-plane anisotropy that is consistent with the anisotropy in the orbital moment. The smallest clusters are, within experimental error, magnetically isotropic. The anisotropy constant in the 475-atom clusters is significantly higher than the bulk value.
