  • eta PRODUCTION IN PROTON-PROTON COLLISIONS AT 72 MeV EXCESS ENERGY
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Modern Physics A. - 0217-751X .- 1793-656X. ; 24:2-3, s. 446-449
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of eta mesons at an excess energy of 72 MeV has been studied in the reaction pp -> pp(eta)gamma gamma. It is shown that a simple model with Pp. final states included reproduces observed differential distributions better than the same model restricted to Ss, Sd and Ds final states. The strong influence of the Pp states could be taken as an indication of rho dominance within an one boson exchange model for the excitation of N*(1535).

  • Genetic and functional analyses demonstrate a role for abnormal glycinergic signaling in autism.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Molecular psychiatry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-5578 .- 1359-4184. ; 21:7, s. 936-945
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition characterized by marked genetic heterogeneity. Recent studies of rare structural and sequence variants have identified hundreds of loci involved in ASD, but our knowledge of the overall genetic architecture and the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remains incomplete. Glycine receptors (GlyRs) are ligand-gated chloride channels that mediate inhibitory neurotransmission in the adult nervous system but exert an excitatory action in immature neurons. GlyRs containing the α2 subunit are highly expressed in the embryonic brain, where they promote cortical interneuron migration and the generation of excitatory projection neurons. We previously identified a rare microdeletion of the X-linked gene GLRA2, encoding the GlyR α2 subunit, in a boy with autism. The microdeletion removes the terminal exons of the gene (GLRA2(Δex8-9)). Here, we sequenced 400 males with ASD and identified one de novo missense mutation, p.R153Q, absent from controls. In vitro functional analysis demonstrated that the GLRA2(Δex8)(-)(9) protein failed to localize to the cell membrane, while the R153Q mutation impaired surface expression and markedly reduced sensitivity to glycine. Very recently, an additional de novo missense mutation (p.N136S) was reported in a boy with ASD, and we show that this mutation also reduced cell-surface expression and glycine sensitivity. Targeted glra2 knockdown in zebrafish induced severe axon-branching defects, rescued by injection of wild type but not GLRA2(Δex8-9) or R153Q transcripts, providing further evidence for their loss-of-function effect. Glra2 knockout mice exhibited deficits in object recognition memory and impaired long-term potentiation in the prefrontal cortex. Taken together, these results implicate GLRA2 in non-syndromic ASD, unveil a novel role for GLRA2 in synaptic plasticity and learning and memory, and link altered glycinergic signaling to social and cognitive impairments.Molecular Psychiatry advance online publication, 15 September 2015; doi:10.1038/mp.2015.139.

  • Human impacts and their interactions in the Baltic Sea region
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Earth Syst. Dynam.. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 2190-4987 .- 2190-4979. ; 13:1, s. 1-80
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coastal environments, in particular heavily populated semi-enclosed marginal seas and coasts like the Baltic Sea region, are strongly affected by human activities. A multitude of human impacts, including climate change, affect the different compartments of the environment, and these effects interact with each other. As part of the Baltic Earth Assessment Reports (BEAR), we present an inventory and discussion of different human-induced factors and processes affecting the environment of the Baltic Sea region, and their interrelations. Some are naturally occurring and modified by human activities (i.e. climate change, coastal processes, hypoxia, acidification, submarine groundwater discharges, marine ecosystems, non-indigenous species, land use and land cover), some are completely human-induced (i.e. agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries, river regulations, offshore wind farms, shipping, chemical contamination, dumped warfare agents, marine litter and microplastics, tourism, and coastal management), and they are all interrelated to different degrees. We present a general description and analysis of the state of knowledge on these interrelations. Our main insight is that climate change has an overarching, integrating impact on all of the other factors and can be interpreted as a background effect, which has different implications for the other factors. Impacts on the environment and the human sphere can be roughly allocated to anthropogenic drivers such as food production, energy production, transport, industry and economy. The findings from this inventory of available information and analysis of the different factors and their interactions in the Baltic Sea region can largely be transferred to other comparable marginal and coastal seas in the world.

  • Delta Delta excitation in proton-proton induced pi(0)pi(0) production
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 695:1-4, s. 115-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exclusive measurements of the pp -> pp pi(0)pi(0) reaction have been performed at CELSIUS/WASA at energies from threshold up to T-p = 1.3 GeV. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained. Here we concentrate on energies T-p >= GeV. where the Delta Delta excitation becomes the leading process. No evidence is found for a significant ABC effect beyond that given by the conventional t-channel Delta Delta excitation. This holds also for the double-pionic fusion to the quasibound He-2. The data are compared to model predictions, which are based on both pi- and rho-exchange. Total and differential cross sections are at variance with these predictions and call for a profound modification of the rho-exchange. A phenomenological modification allowing only a small rho-exchange contribution leads to a quantitative description of the data.

  • Excitation of the Roper resonance in single- and double-pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 35:3, s. 317-319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In most investigations the Roper resonance is sensed only very indirectly via complex partial-wave analyses. We find indications for its excitation in the invariant n pi(+) mass spectrum of the pp -> np pi(+) reaction at M approximate to 1360 MeV with a width of approximate to 150 MeV . The values fit very favorably to the most recent phase shift results as well as to the observations at BES. In the near-threshold two-pion production pp -> pp pi(0)pi(0) , where the Roper excitation and its subsequent decays via the routes N* -> Delta pi -> N pi pi and N* -> N sigma are the only dominant processes, we find its direct decay into the N sigma channel to be the by far dominating decay process -in favor of a monopole excitation of the Roper resonance.

  • Exclusive measurement of the pp -> nn pi(+)pi(+) reaction at 1.1 GeV
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 47:9, s. 108-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • First exclusive data for the pp -> nnp(+)pi(+) reaction have been obtained at CELSIUS with the WASA detector setup at a beam energy of T(p) - 1.1 GeV. Total and differential cross-sections disagree with theoretical calculations, which predict the Delta Delta excitation to be the dominant process at this beam energy. Instead, the data require the excitation of one of the nucleons to a higher-lying Delta state, preferably the Delta(1600)P(33), to be the leading process.

  • ISOSPIN DECOMPOSITION OF pp -> NN pi pi CROSS SECTIONS : DO WE SEE A SIGN OF Delta(1600) EXCITATION IN THE nn pi(+)pi(+) CHANNEL?
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Modern Physics A. - 0217-751X .- 1793-656X. ; 24:2-3, s. 450-453
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The two-pion production in pp-collisions has been investigated in exclusive measurements from threshold up to T-p = 1.36 GeV. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained for the channels pn pi(+) pi(0), pp pi(+) pi(-), pp pi(0)pi(0) and also nn pi(+)pi(+). For intermediate incident energies T-p > 1 GeV, i.e. in the region, which is beyond the Roper excitation but at the onset of Delta Delta excitation the total pp pi(0)pi(0) cross section falls behind theoretical predictions by as much as an order of magnitude near 1.2 GeV, whereas the nn pi(+)pi(+) cross section is a factor of five larger than predicted. A model-unconstrained isospin decompostion of the cross section points to a significant contribution of an isospin 3/2 resonance other than the Delta(1232). As a possible candidate the Delta(1600) is discussed.

  • THE pp -> pp pi(0)pi(0) REACTION AND ITS LIMITING CASE, FUSION TO QUASI-BOUND He-2, IN SEARCH OF THE ABC EFFECT
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Modern Physics A. - 0217-751X .- 1793-656X. ; 26:3-4, s. 702-704
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pi(0)pi(0) production in pp-collisions has been investigated in exclusive and kinematically complete measurements from threshold up to T-p = 1.4 GeV. For incident energies T-p > 1 GeV, i.e. in the region beyond the Roper excitation, the Delta Delta excitation process takes over. The data are well explained by the t-channel Delta Delta process dominated by pion exchange. There is no low-mass enhancement (ABC effect) in the pi(0)pi(0)-invariant mass distribution beyond that given by the conventional t-channel Delta Delta process. This is also true for the limiting case, where the protons are in the quasi-bound He-2 state.
