  • Nano-objects emitted during maintenance of common particle generators: direct chemical characterization with aerosol mass spectrometry and implications for risk assessments
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nanoparticle Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1572-896X .- 1388-0764. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanotechnology gives us materials with enhanced or completely new properties. At the same time, inhalation of manufactured nano-objects has been related to an array of adverse biological effects. We characterized particle emissions, which occurred during maintenance of common metal nanoparticle generators and contrasted the properties of the emitted particles with those originally produced by the generators. A new approach using online aerosol mass spectrometry (AMS), for time-and size-resolved measurements of the particle chemical composition, was applied in combination with more conventional techniques for particle sampling and analysis, including electron microscopy. Emissions during maintenance work, in terms of mass and surface area concentration in the size range of 0.02-10 mu m, were dominated by large agglomerates (1-5 mu m). With AMS, we show that the particle composition depends on both generator type and maintenance task being performed and that the instrument can be used for highly time-resolved selective studies of metal nanoparticle emissions. The emitted agglomerates have a relatively high probability to be deposited in the lower respiratory tract, since the mean particle diameter coincided with a peak in the lung deposition curve. Each of these agglomerates consisted of a very high number (10(3)-10(5)/agglomerate) of nanometer-sized primary particles originating from the particle synthesis process. This made them possess large surface areas, one of the key properties in nanotoxicology. Similar agglomerates may be emitted in a wide range of processes when nanoparticles are manufactured or handled. The fate of such agglomerates, once deposited in the respiratory tract, is unknown and should therefore be considered in future particle toxicological studies. Our results highlight the importance of including micrometer-sized particles in exposure and emission assessments.

  • Effect of the carrier gas on the structure and composition of Co–Ni bimetallic nanoparticles generated by spark ablation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aerosol Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-8502. ; 170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spark ablation is a versatile technique for producing pure size-selected nanoparticles. The carrier gas used in spark ablation affects the nanoparticles’ generation, crystalline structure, and chemical composition. The comprehension of this phenomenon can contribute to the design of nanoparticles with tailored properties. In this paper, we evaluate the effects of reducing (95%N2 + 5%H2), inert (N2), and oxidative (air) carrier gases in a spark ablation setup with Co–Ni alloyed electrodes. The agglomerates’ particle size distribution, morphology, structure, and composition were highly dependent on the carrier gas, especially its relative oxygen content. The agglomerates were then sintered into compacted particles. Three different crystalline structures and chemical compositions were observed with X-ray diffraction and confirmed with transmission electron microscopy for the compacted particles. For 95%N2 + 5%H2 and air, single-phase (Co,Ni) and (Co,Ni)O particles were identified, respectively, whereas for N2, two-phase (Co,Ni) and (Co,Ni)O particles were obtained. This work opens up new possibilities of tuning the structure and composition, i.e., distribution of metallic and oxide phases, of the produced particles and thus tailor their properties for specific applications by simply changing the carrier gas.

  • In-Flight Tuning of Au-Sn Nanoparticle Properties
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - 0743-7463. ; 40:31, s. 16393-16399
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multimetallic nanoparticles possess a variety of beneficial properties with potential relevance for various applications. These metallic nanoparticles can consist of randomly ordered alloys, which retain the properties of the constituting elements, or ordered intermetallics, which possess extended properties. Depending on the desired application, specific alloys or intermetallic compounds are required. However, it remains challenging to achieve particular morphologies, crystal structures, chemical compositions, and particle sizes because of the inherent complexity of nanoparticle synthesis. In this work, Au-Sn nanoparticles were synthesized using a continuous one-step gas-phase synthesis method that offers the possibility to anneal the nanoparticles in flight directly after generation to tune their properties. The bimetallic model system Au-Sn, comprising both alloys and intermetallic compounds, was studied in the temperature range of 300 to 1100 °C. The bimetallic Au/Sn ratio in the nanoparticles can be adjusted with in-flight annealing between 70/30 and 40/60 atomic %. While Au-rich alloys are obtained at lower temperatures, the increase in the annealing temperature leads to the formation of more Sn-rich intermetallic phases. Surface and size effects greatly influence particle morphologies and phase fractions. This research opens new opportunities for the synthesis of customized nanoparticles by temperature adjustment and particle size selection.
