  • Usability of a new electronic assistive device for community-dwelling persons with mild dementia
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Aging & Mental Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1360-7863 .- 1364-6915. ; 16:5, s. 584-591
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To evaluate a newly developed integrated digital prosthetic, the COGKNOW Day Navigator (CDN), to support persons with mild dementia in their daily lives, with memory, social contacts, daily activities and safety. Methods: A user participatory method was applied in the development process, which consisted of three iterative 1-year cycles with field tests in Amsterdam, Belfast and Luleå. In the successive cycles 16, 14 and 12 persons with dementia and their carers participated. Data on usability were collected by means of interviews, observations, questionnaires, logging and diaries. The CDN prototype consists of a touch screen, a mobile device, sensors and actuators. Results: The evaluation showed that persons with dementia and carers valued the CDN overall as user-friendly and useful. Conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the system in daily life were limited due to insufficient duration of the testing period caused by delays in development and some instability of the final prototype. Conclusion: With the suggested adaptations, the CDN is expected to be a useful tool for supporting communitydwelling persons with mild dementia and their carers.

  • COGKNOW : helping people with mild dementia navigate their day
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dementia is a progressive, chronic disease affecting 5% of all persons above 65 and over 40% of people over 90. The aim of the COGKNOW project is to achieve a breakthrough with research that addresses the needs of those with dementia, particularly those with mild dementia living in the community. This entails cognitive reinforcement in four main areas: helping people to remember, helping to maintain social contact, helping with performing daily life and recreational activities and finally enhance feelings of safety. Based on a sound foundation of needs reported in dementia literature, workshops and individual interviews have been carried out with dementia sufferers and their carers in three European countries. A ranked analysis of information from workshops and interviews, and the state of the art of successful ICT solutions will be the basis for formulating the functionalities of the technical solution and for the development of a cognitive prosthetic device with associated services for people with mild dementia. The research and evaluation will be conducted from human factors, technology, and business perspectives in three phases of one year each. In this paper we discuss the design of the COGKNOW project, the first results of the user needs inquiry workshops and the ICT solutions the COGKNOW project will focus on in the first year.

  • Detection of an EPR multiline signal for the S-0 state in photosystem II
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Biochemistry. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 0006-2960 .- 1520-4995. ; 36:37, s. 11055-11060
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The S-0* state was generated by incubation of dark-adapted (S-1 state) photosystem II membranes either with the exogenous two electron reductant hydrazine and subsequent 273 K illumination in the presence of DCMU or by dark incubation with low amounts of the one electron reductant hydroxylamine. In agreement with earlier reports, the S-1 and S-1 states were found to be electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) silent. However, in the presence of 0.5-1.5% methanol, a weak EPR multiline signal centered around g = 2.0 was observed at 7 K for the S-0* states generated by both procedures. This signal has a similar average line splitting to the well-characterized S-2 state multiline EPR signal, but can be clearly distinguished from that and other modified S-2 multiline signals by differences in line position and intensities. In addition, at 4 K it can be seen that the S-0* multiline has a greater spectral breadth than the S-2 multilines and is composed of up to 26 peaks. The S-0* signal is not seen in the absence of methanol and is not affected by 1 mM EDTA in the buffer medium. We assign the S-0* multiline signal to the manganese cluster of the oxygen evolving complex in a mixed valence state of the form (MnMnMnMnIII)-Mn-II-Mn-III-Mn-III, (MnMnMnMnIV)-Mn-II-Mn-III-Mn-IV, or (MnMnMnMnIV)-Mn-III-Mn-III-Mn-III. Addition of methanol may be helpful in future to find an EPR signal originating from the natural S-0 state.

  • A Six-year Image-subtraction Light Curve of SN 2010jl
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. - : IOP Publishing. - 0004-6280 .- 1538-3873. ; 131:999
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SN 2010jl was a luminous Type Lin supernova (SN), detected in radio, optical, X-ray and hard X-rays. Here we report on its six-year R- and g-band light curves obtained using the Palomar Transient Factory. The light curve was generated using a pipeline based on the proper image-subtraction method and we discuss the algorithm performances. As noted before, the R-band light curve, up to about 300 days after maximum light is well described by a power-law decline with a power-law index of alpha approximate to -0.5. Between day 300 and day 2300 after maximum light, it is consistent with a power-law decline, with a power-law index of about alpha approximate to -3.4. The longevity of the light curve suggests that the massive circumstellar material around the progenitor was ejected on timescales of at least tens of years prior to the progenitor explosion.

    • The recent robust and homogeneous analysis of the world's supernova distance-redshift data, together with cosmic microwave background and baryon acoustic oscillation data—provides a powerful tool for constraining cosmological models. Here we examine particular classes of scalar field, modified gravity, and phenomenological models to assess whether they are consistent with observations even when their behavior deviates from the cosmological constant Λ. Some models have tension with the data, while others survive only by approaching the cosmological constant, and a couple are statistically favored over Λ cold dark matter. Dark energy described by two equation-of-state parameters has considerable phase space to avoid Λ and next-generation data will be required to constrain such physics, with the level of complementarity between probes varying with cosmology.

  • SN 2018fif : The Explosion of a Large Red Supergiant Discovered in Its Infancy by the Zwicky Transient Facility
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 902:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-cadence transient surveys are able to capture supernovae closer to their first light than ever before. Applying analytical models to such early emission, we can constrain the progenitor stars' properties. In this paper, we present observations of SN 2018fif (ZTF 18abokyfk). The supernova was discovered close to first light and monitored by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. Early spectroscopic observations suggest that the progenitor of SN 2018fif was surrounded by relatively small amounts of circumstellar material compared to all previous cases. This particularity, coupled with the high-cadence multiple-band coverage, makes it a good candidate to investigate using shock-cooling models. We employ the SOPRANOS code, an implementation of the model by Sapir & Waxman and its extension to early times by Morag et al. Compared with previous implementations, SOPRANOS has the advantage of including a careful account of the limited temporal validity domain of the shock-cooling model as well as allowing usage of the entirety of the early UV data. We find that the progenitor of SN 2018fif was a large red supergiant with a radius of R = 744.0(-128.0)(+183.0) R-circle dot and an ejected mass of M-ej = 9.3(-5.8)(+0.4) M-circle dot. Our model also gives information on the explosion epoch, the progenitor's inner structure, the shock velocity, and the extinction. The distribution of radii is double-peaked, with smaller radii corresponding to lower values of the extinction, earlier recombination times, and a better match to the early UV data. If these correlations persist in future objects, denser spectroscopic monitoring constraining the time of recombination, as well as accurate UV observations (e.g., with ULTRASAT), will help break the extinction/radius degeneracy and independently determine both.

  • PTF11mnb : First analog of supernova 2005bf Long-rising, double-peaked supernova Ic from a massive progenitor
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 609
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. We study PTF11mnb, a He-poor supernova (SN) whose light curves resemble those of SN 2005bf, a peculiar double-peaked stripped-envelope (SE) SN, until the declining phase after the main peak. We investigate the mechanism powering its light curve and the nature of its progenitor star. Methods. Optical photometry and spectroscopy of PTF11mnb are presented. We compared light curves, colors and spectral properties to those of SN 2005bf and normal SE SNe. We built a bolometric light curve and modeled this light curve with the SuperNova Explosion Code (SNEC) hydrodynamical code explosion of a MESA progenitor star and semi-analytic models. Results. The light curve of PTF11mnb turns out to be similar to that of SN 2005bf until similar to 50 d when the main (secondary) peaks occur at -18.5 mag. The early peak occurs at similar to 20 d and is about 1.0 mag fainter. After the main peak, the decline rate of PTF11mnb is remarkably slower than what was observed in SN 2005bf, and it traces well the Co-56 decay rate. The spectra of PTF11mnb reveal a SN Ic and have no traces of He unlike in the case of SN Ib 2005bf, although they have velocities comparable to those of SN 2005bf. The whole evolution of the bolometric light curve is well reproduced by the explosion of a massive (M-ej = 7.8 M-circle dot), He-poor star characterized by a double-peaked Ni-56 distribution, a total Ni-56 mass of 0.59 M-circle dot, and an explosion energy of 2.2 x 10(51) erg. Alternatively, a normal SN Ib/c explosion (M(Ni-56) = 0.11 M-circle dot, E-K = 0.2 x 10(51) erg, M-ej = 1 M-circle dot) can power the first peak while a magnetar, with a magnetic field characterized by B = 5.0 x 10(14) G, and a rotation period of P = 18.1 ms, provides energy for the main peak. The early g-band light curve can be fit with a shock-breakout cooling tail or an extended envelope model from which a radius of at least 30 R-circle dot is obtained. Conclusions. We presented a scenario where PTF11mnb was the explosion of a massive, He-poor star, characterized by a double-peaked Ni-56 distribution. In this case, the ejecta mass and the absence of He imply a large ZAMS mass (similar to 85 M-circle dot) for the progenitor, which most likely was a Wolf-Rayet star, surrounded by an extended envelope formed either by a pre-SN eruption or due to a binary configuration. Alternatively, PTF11mnb could be powered by a SE SN with a less massive progenitor during the first peak and by a magnetar afterward.
