  • Synthetic NPA diagnostic for energetic particles in JET plasmas
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1748-0221 .- 1748-0221. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutral particle analysis (NPA) is one of the few methods for diagnosing fast ions inside a plasma by measuring neutral atom fluxes emitted due to charge exchange reactions. The JET tokamak features an NPA diagnostic which measures neutral atom fluxes and energy spectra simultaneously for hydrogen, deuterium and tritium species. A synthetic NPA diagnostic has been developed and used to interpret these measurements to diagnose energetic particles in JET plasmas with neutral beam injection (NBI) heating. The synthetic NPA diagnostic performs a Monte Carlo calculation of the neutral atom fluxes in a realistic geometry. The 4D fast ion distributions, representing NBI ions, were simulated using the Monte Carlo orbit-following code ASCOT. Neutral atom density profiles were calculated using the FRANTIC neutral code in the JINTRAC modelling suite. Additionally, for rapid analysis, a scan of neutral profiles was precalculated with FRANTIC for a range of typical plasma parameters. These were taken from the JETPEAK database, which includes a comprehensive set of data from the flat-top phases of nearly all discharges in recent JET campaigns. The synthetic diagnostic was applied to various JET plasmas in the recent hydrogen campaign where different hydrogen/deuterium mixtures and NBI configurations were used. The simulated neutral fluxes from the fast ion distributions were found to agree with the measured fluxes, reproducing the slowing-down profiles for different beam isotopes and energies and quantitatively estimating the fraction of hydrogen and deuterium fast ions.

  • Shutdown dose rate neutronics experiment during high performances DD operations at JET
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Fusion engineering and design. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0920-3796 .- 1873-7196. ; 136, s. 1545-1549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel Shutdown dose rate benchmark experiment has been performed at Joint European Torus (JET) machine during the last high performance Deuterium-Deuterium (DD) campaign in preparation of future high Deuterium Tritium experiment (DTE2). On-line continuous gamma dose rate measurements were performed for four months at two ITER relevant ex-vessel positions close to Radial Neutron Camera and on the top of ITER-like Antenna using high-sensitive ionization chambers. Decay gamma spectra at the shutdown were also collected using High Purity Germanium spectrometer to identify dominant radionuclides contributing to the dose. Neutron fluence measurements during operations were performed as well using activation foils assembly installed close to ionization chambers. The measurements are performed to validate shutdown dose rate tools used in ITER. This paper presents the experimental assembly and measurements analyses.

  • EDGE2D-EIRENE simulations of the impact of poloidal flux expansion on the radiative divertor performance in JET
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Materials and Energy. - : ELSEVIER. - 2352-1791. ; 12, s. 786-790
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the past at JET, with the MkI divertor, a systematic study of the influence of X-point height and poloidal flux expansion has been conducted [1,2] showing minor differences in the radiation distribution, whereas in [3] experiment and simulations have shown enhancement of detachment as the flux expansion was increased. More recently at JET, equipped with the ITER-like wall (ILW), radiative seeded scenarios have been studied and a maximum radiation fraction 75% has been achieved. EDGE2D-EIRENE [4-6] simulations [7,8] have already shown that the divertor heat fluxes can be reduced with N2 injection, qualitatively consistent with experimental observations [9], by adjusting the impurity injection rate to reproduce the measured divertor radiation. In this paper we will present edge predictive simulations on the assessment of effects of poloidal flux expansion and recycling on radiation distribution and X-point peaking on JET-ILW nitrogen seeded plasmas.

  • Simulation of neutron emission in neutral beam injection heated plasmas with the real-time code RABBIT
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 59:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In plasmas heated with deuterium beams a deficit of the expected fusion neutron rate is an indicator of the deterioration of the fast-ion confinement, caused, for instance, by magnetohydrodynamic instabilities. The capability of predicting this deficit during the discharge relies on the availability of real-time estimates of the neutron rate from NBI codes which must be fast and accurate at the same time. Therefore, the recently developed real-time RABBIT code for neutral beam injection (NBI) simulations has been extended to output the distribution function and calculate the neutron emission. After the description of this newly installed diagnostics in RABBIT, benchmarks with NUBEAM, a massively used and validated Monte Carlo NBI solver, are discussed on ASDEX-Upgrade and JET cases. A first application for control-room intershot analysis on DIII-D is presented, and the results are compared on a large database with a slower NUBEAM analysis. Further application possibilities, e.g. for real-time control of Alfven eigenmodes, are outlined.

  • The 'neutron deficit' in the JET tokamak
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 57:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The measured D-D neutron rate of neutral beam heated JET baseline and hybrid H-modes in deuterium is found to be between approximately 50% and 100% of the neutron rate expected from the TRANSP code, depending on the plasma parameters. A number of candidate explanations for the shortfall, such as fuel dilution, errors in beam penetration and effectively available beam power have been excluded. As the neutron rate in JET is dominated by beamplasma interactions, the ` neutron deficit' may be caused by a yet unidentified form of fast particle redistribution. Modelling, which assumes fast particle transport to be responsible for the deficit, indicates that such redistribution would have to happen at time scales faster than both the slowing down time and the energy confinement time. Sawteeth and edge localised modes are found to make no significant contribution to the deficit. There is also no obvious correlation with magnetohydrodynamic activity measured using magnetic probes at the tokamak vessel walls. Modelling of fast particle orbits in the 3D fields of neoclassical tearing modes shows that realistically sized islands can only contribute a few percent to the deficit. In view of these results it appears unlikely that the neutron deficit results from a single physical process in the plasma.

  • Deposition of impurity metals during campaigns with the JET ITER-like Wall
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Materials and Energy. - : Elsevier. - 2352-1791. ; 19, s. 218-224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Post mortem analysis shows that mid and high atomic number metallic impurities are present in deposits on JET plasma facing components with the highest amount of Ni and W, and therefore the largest sink, being found at the top of the inner divertor. Sources are defined as "continuous" or "specific", in that "continuous" sources arise from ongoing erosion from plasma facing surfaces and "specific" are linked with specific events which decrease over time until they no longer act as a source. This contribution evaluates the sinks and estimates sources, and the balance gives an indication of the dominating processes. Charge exchange neutral erosion is found to be the main source of nickel, whereas erosion of divertor plasma facing components is the main source of tungsten. Specific sources are shown to have little influence over the global mid- and high-Z impurity concentrations in deposits.

  • First principles of modelling the stabilization of microturbulence by fast ions
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 58:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The observation that fast ions stabilize ion-temperature-gradient-driven microturbulence has profound implications for future fusion reactors. It is also important in optimizing the performance of present-day devices. In this work, we examine in detail the phenomenology of fast ion stabilization and present a reduced model which describes this effect. This model is derived from the high-energy limit of the gyrokinetic equation and extends the existing 'dilution' model to account for nontrivial fast ion kinetics. Our model provides a physically-transparent explanation for the observed stabilization and makes several key qualitative predictions. Firstly, that different classes of fast ions, depending on their radial density or temperature variation, have different stabilizing properties. Secondly, that zonal flows are an important ingredient in this effect precisely because the fast ion zonal response is negligible. Finally, that in the limit of highly-energetic fast ions, their response approaches that of the 'dilution' model; in particular, alpha particles are expected to have little, if any, stabilizing effect on plasma turbulence. We support these conclusions through detailed linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations.

  • Modelling of JET DT experiments in ILW configurations
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Contributions to Plasma Physics. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 0863-1042 .- 1521-3986. ; 58:6-8, s. 739-745
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Numerical scan at constant shows that core and scrape-off layer (SOL) radiations do not depend on the plasma current (I-p). Whereas the SOL radiation increases with seeding, the core radiation, however, does not continue to increase with seeding but rolls over at higher seeding rates in the simulations. The core plasma contamination by W ions is low, c(W) << 10(-4). When the seeding starts, an increase in radiation power leading to a reduction in P-loss = (P-aux - P-rad) is observed, influencing the plasma confinement. The power scan at constant I-p indicates that the core radiation, P-plate, P-SOL (and even SOL radiation), saturates with seeding. In addition, strong dilution with increasing seeding (Z(eff) >> 3) and large W concentrations with increasing power are found. Comparing neon with nitrogen seeding, it is seen that neon leads to slightly larger total radiation than nitrogen. However, that is achieved with much higher plasma contamination (Z(eff) approximate to 4-5) and dilution in the case of Ne, and simultaneously the power crossing the separatrix is lower for Ne than for N, indicating better H-mode performance in N-2-seeded discharges.

  • A power-balance model of the density limit in fusion plasmas : application to the L-mode tokamak
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 59:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A power-balance model, with radiation losses from impurities and neutrals, gives a unified description of the density limit (DL) of the stellarator, the L-mode tokamak, and the reversed field pinch (RFP). The model predicts a Sudo-like scaling for the stellarator, a Greenwald- like scaling, alpha I-p(8/9), for the RFP and the ohmic tokamak, a mixed scaling, alpha (PIp4/9)-I-4/9, for the additionally heated L-mode tokamak. In a previous paper (Zanca et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 056010) the model was compared with ohmic tokamak, RFP and stellarator experiments. Here, we address the issue of the DL dependence on heating power in the L-mode tokamak. Experimental data from high-density disrupted L-mode discharges performed at JET, as well as in other machines, arc taken as a term of comparison. The model fits the observed maximum densities better than the pure Greenwald limit.
