  • Thermal constraints for heterostructure barrier varactors
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: IEEE Electron Device Letters. - 0741-3106 .- 1558-0563. ; 25:11, s. 713-715
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current research on heterostructure barrier varactors (HBVs) devotes much effort to the generation of very high power levels in the millimeter wave region. One way of increasing the power handling capacity of HBVs is to stack several barriers epitaxially. However, the small device dimensions lead to very high temperatures in the active layers, deteriorating the performance. We have derived analytical expressions and combined those with finite element simulations, and used the results to predict the maximum effective number of barriers for HBVs. The thermal model is also used to compare the peak temperature and power handling capacity of GaAs and InP-based HBVs. It is argued that InP-based devices may be inappropriate for high-power applications due to the poor thermal conductivity of the InGaAs modulation layers.

  • An integrated analysis of Maglemose bone points reframes the Early Mesolithic of Southern Scandinavia
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The extensive peat bogs of Southern Scandinavia have yielded rich Mesolithic archaeological assemblages, with one of the most iconic artefacts being the bone point. Although great in number they remain understudied. Here we present a combined investigation of the typology, protein-based species composition, and absolute chronology of Maglemosian bone points. The majority of the bone points are made from cervids and bovines. However, changes both in species composition and barb morphology can be directly linked to a paucity of finds lasting nearly 600 years in Southern Scandinavia around 10,300 cal BP. We hypothesize that this hiatus was climate-driven and forced hunter-gatherers to abandon the lakes. Furthermore, the marked change in bone points coincides with a change in lithic technology. We, therefore, propose that the Maglemose culture in Southern Scandinavia is fundamentally divided into an Early Complex and a Late Complex.

  • Protein H, an antiphagocytic surface protein in Streptococcus pyogenes
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Infection and Immunity. - 1098-5522. ; 67:4, s. 1708-1714
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surface-associated M protein is a major virulence factor in Streptococcus pyogenes which confers bacterial resistance to phagocytosis. However, many S. pyogenes strains also express additional structurally related so-called M-like proteins. The strain studied here is of the clinically important M1 serotype and expresses two structurally related surface proteins, the M1 protein and protein H. Mutants were generated that expressed only one or none of these proteins at the bacterial surface. For survival in human blood either protein H or M1 protein was sufficient, whereas the double mutant was rapidly killed. The protein-binding properties of protein H, M1 protein, and the mutants suggest that bacterial binding of immunoglobulin G and factor H or factor H-like protein 1, which are regulatory proteins in the complement system, contribute to the antiphagocytic property.

  • Effects of similar intakes of marine n-3 fatty acids from enriched food products and fish oil on cardiovascular risk markers in healthy human subjects
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Nutrition. - 0007-1145 .- 1475-2662. ; 107:9, s. 1339-1349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is convincing evidence that consumption of fish and fish oil rich in long-chain (LC) n-3 PUFA (n-3 LCPUFA), EPA (20 : 5n-3) and DHA (22 : 6n-3) reduce the risk of CHD. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether n-3 LCPUFA-enriched food products provide similar beneficial effects as fish oil with regard to incorporation into plasma lipids and effects on cardiovascular risk markers. A parallel 7-week intervention trial was performed where 159 healthy men and women were randomised to consume either 34 g fish pate (n 44), 500 ml fruit juice (n 38) or three capsules of concentrated fish oil (n 40), all contributing to a daily intake of approximately 1 g EPA and DHA. A fourth group did not receive any supplementation or food product and served as controls (n 37). Plasma fatty acid composition, serum lipids, and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress were measured. Compared with the control group, plasma n-3 LCPUFA and EPA: arachidonic acid ratio increased equally in all intervention groups. However, no significant changes in blood lipids and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress were observed. In conclusion, enriched fish pate and fruit juice represent suitable delivery systems for n-3 LCPUFA. However, although the dose given is known to reduce the risk of CVD, no significant changes were observed on cardiovascular risk markers in this healthy population.

  • Endoglycosidase treatment abrogates IgG arthritogenicity: Importance of IgG glycosylation in arthritis.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Immunology. - Weinheim : Wiley. - 1521-4141 .- 0014-2980. ; 37:10, s. 2973-2982
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The glycosylation status of IgG has been implicated in the pathology of rheumatoid arthritis. Earlier, we reported the identification of a novel secreted endo-beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase (EndoS), secreted by Streptococcus pyogenes that specifically hydrolyzes the beta-1,4-di-N-acetylchitobiose core of the asparagine-linked glycan of human IgG. Here, we analyzed the arthritogenicity of EndoS-treated collagen type II (CII) -specific mouse mAb in vivo. Endoglycosidase treatment of the antibodies inhibited the induction of arthritis in (BALB/c x B10.Q) F1 mice and induced a milder arthritis in B10.RIII mice as compared with the severe arthritis induced by non-treated antibodies. Furthermore, EndoS treatment did not affect the binding of IgG to CII and their ability to activate complement, but it resulted in reduced IgG binding to Fc gamma R and disturbed the formation of stable immune complexes. Hence, the asparagine-linked glycan on IgG plays a crucial role in the development of arthritis.

  • A new aeromagnetic survey of the North Pole and the Arctic Ocean north of Greenland and Ellesmere Island
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Earth Planets and Space. - : Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences. - 1343-8832 .- 1880-5981. ; 62:10, s. 829-832
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a preliminary analysis of more than 50,000 km of aeromagnetic survey lines flown in the Arctic Ocean, acquired in 2009 with an optically pumped scalar magnetometer as part of the airborne geophysical survey 'LOMGRAV'. From the observations we removed main and magnetospheric fields as given by the CHAOS-3 field model (Olsen et al., 2010) and remaining external fields as monitored by the Canadian magnetic observatory Alert. The reduced data were levelled based on cross-over differences at line intersections. Finally, a grid was computed, upward continued by 3500 m and compared with the EMAG2 grid (Maus et al., 2009), showing a good general agreement but also areas with systematic differences. The obtained data are expected to be part of the next version of the World Digital Magnetic Anomaly Map (WDMAM).

  • Circulating delta-like Notch ligand 1 is correlated with cardiac allograft vasculopathy and suppressed in heart transplant recipients on everolimus-based immunosuppression.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: American journal of transplantation : official journal of the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. - : Elsevier BV. - 1600-6143. ; 19:4, s. 1050-1060
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) causes heart failure after heart transplantation (HTx), but its pathogenesis is incompletely understood. Notch signaling, possibly modulated by everolimus (EVR), is essential for processes involved in CAV. We hypothesized that circulating Notch ligands would be dysregulated after HTx. We studied circulating delta-like Notch ligand 1 (DLL1) and periostin (POSTN) and CAV in de novo HTx recipients (n = 70) randomized to standard or EVR-based, calcineurin inhibitor-free immunosuppression and in maintenance HTx recipients (n = 41). Compared to healthy controls, plasma DLL1 and POSTN were elevated in de novo (P < .01; P < .001) and maintenance HTx recipients (P < .001; P < .01). Use of EVR was associated with a treatment effect for DLL1. For de novo HTx recipients, a change in DLL1 correlated with a change in CAV at 1 (P = .021) and 3 years (P = .005). In vitro, activation of T cells increased DLL1 secretion, attenuated by EVR. In vitro data suggest that also endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) could contribute to circulating DLL1. Immunostaining of myocardial specimens showed colocalization of DLL1 with T cells, endothelial cells, and VSMCs. Our findings suggest a role of DLL1 in CAV progression, and that the beneficial effect of EVR on CAV could reflect a suppressive effect on DLL1. • A 100-GHz HBV frequency quintupler using microstrip elements
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters. - 1558-1764 .- 1531-1309. ; 14:10, s. 493-395
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new quintupler concept using a heterostructure barrier varactor (HBV) has been fabricated and measured. The multiplier consists of a quartz circuit mounted in a full height crossed waveguide block, and hence uses a mixture of waveguide components and microstrip elements. The embedding impedance for the fundamental frequency is provided by tuneable backshorts, whereas conventional microstrip circuit elements are used for impedance matching for the third and fifth harmonic. This topology is highly suitable for monolithic integration, and a peak conversion efficiency of 4.9 % was measured at 102.5 GHz with an input power of 13 dBm.
