  • A comparison between chorionic gonadotrophins extracted from human, rhesus monkey and marmoset placentae
  • 1972
  • Ingår i: Journal of Endocrinology. - : Bioscientifica. - 0022-0795 .- 1479-6805. ; 55:2, s. 363-368
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evidence is provided to show that chorionic gonadotrophins extracted from the human, rhesus monkey and marmoset placentae have antigenic determinants in common. Similar slopes were obtained for these gonadotrophins in a radioimmunoassay for human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG). The biological activity of the monkey gonadotrophins was neutralized by anti-HCG serum. When the gonadotrophic activity of the monkey placental extracts was assayed biologically and immunologically, using HCG as a standard, similar results were obtained. Higher values were obtained by the immunoassay than by the bioassay when extracts of human placenta were assayed using the same HCG standard.

  • GeAs : Highly Anisotropic van der Waals Thermoelectric Material
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Chemistry of Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0897-4756 .- 1520-5002. ; 28:8, s. 2776-2785
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • GeAs and Sn-doped GeAs were synthesized from elements. Both crystallize in a layered crystal structure in the C2/m space group (No. 12) in the GaTe structure type. The crystal structure consists of As-terminated layers separated by van der Waals gaps. Sn-119 Mossbauer spectroscopy reveals that in the doped compound, Sn atoms are situated in a symmetric and homogeneous environment, most probably in the form of Sn-2 dumbbells. The anisotropic crystal structure of GeAs leads to highly anisotropic transport properties. High electrical and thermal conductivities were determined along the crystallographic layers. For the perpendicular direction across the layers, a sharp drop of more than an order of magnitude was observed for the transport properties of the GeAs single crystal. As a result, an order of magnitude difference in the figure of merit, ZT, was achieved: High-temperature thermoelectric characterization of the Sn-doped compound reveals a remarkable ZT with a maximum of 0.35 at 660 K.

  • Changes in soil organic matter composition and quantity with distance to a nickel smelter : a case study on the Kola Peninsula, NW Russia
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Geoderma. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-7061 .- 1872-6259. ; 127:3-4, s. 216-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The capacity of soils to absorb contamination depends on a number of factors, such as soil organic matter (SOM) that plays an essential role in adsorption of metal ions, especially in Podzols with their low content of clay minerals. Detailed analysis of SOM can provide information about the potential capacity of a soil to mobilise or immobilise contaminating substances, which in turn can be used to predict potential recovery of the soil ecosystem following heavy metal pollution. The purpose of this study was to learn how an increasing load of heavy metals (Cu and Ni) affects SOM content and structure, and which of the SOM functional groups are responsible for metal retention. The study area is located in the central part of the Kola Peninsula, south of Monchegorsk city and the nickel smelting complex ‘Severonickel’. The amount of total carbon in the soil decreased from 86% to 0.6% as the distance from the smelting complex decreased from 34 to 2 km. Functional groups of the SOM had a larger diversity in less polluted soils than in the soils located closer to the smelting complex. Carboxyl groups had a higher intensity of infra red (IR) bands in soils collected at the distance of 34–27 km than those located closer to the smelter. The most disturbed soil at the site closest to the smelter showed almost no presence of COOH groups. We conducted a laboratory experiment using soils from the least polluted sampling site to assess which SOM functional groups may be responsible for metal retention. Experimental contamination of the soil with the Cu/Ni solution resulted in an overall decrease in the absorbance for all studied functional groups within the measured range, except for COOH. This could be attributed both to changes in the structure of the SOM caused by its reaction with the contaminating substances, and to the leaching of some of the organic compounds from the soil during the experiment. Further studies are needed to better understand which functional groups in the SOM are active in the adsorption processes.

  • Kapitulationens estetik : organisering och ledarskap i filmprojekt
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To make a film is indeed a risky business. It concerns artistic expression, organizing processes and not least economics. It is part of the film director’s role to manage the uncertainty with all what it implies in a film project. However, is it possible to regulate an art creating process? In the normative project management literature one proceeds from the dream that a project is realised from an explicitly planned goal, achieved with means allocated in advance and within the afforded time. Concerning the leader role, it is "the superman" that is desired. My starting point in the study concerned the doubts about the narratives of leaders as charismatic heroes, in which the leader is assumed to be in full control of the course of events. Drawing on the social constructionist tradition, this thesis focuses on the relational aesthetic perspective in organizational theorizing. Organizing and leadership can be viewed as mutually constructing each other in human interactions in an ongoing process. In this process the role of aesthetic understanding is emphasized. Organizations can be viewed not only as cognitive creations but also as having their origins in the knowledge creating faculties of all senses of organizational actors and scholars. A theory of temporary organizations has been used as a structuring frame in an effort to understand the organizational dynamics during the art creating process in a film project. The object of the study is to contribute to our understanding how organizing and leadership are constructed in the everyday professional activity of filmmaking. An ethnographic study with participant observation was carried out during a part of the shooting phase of a film project. In addition, several persons working in film production with varying tasks were interviewed. The empirical material is presented as three cases. In all of these cases there are several persons involved in the storytelling on everyday filmmaking practises. The contribution of the study is threefold: first, like writings in ethnography when going to the field, a reading of a "foreign culture" in a film project, from the point of view of business administration and organization theory. Second, the relational aesthetic perspective to viewing organizing and leadership has been applied. Third, the distinctive features of the artistic work for its management are recognized. In Swedish film production it is the director who has the legitimate power to decide the final film text. In everyday filmmaking practises leadership is largely constructed as a hierarchical process. The director makes hundreds of decisions in his or her daily work. Yet, filmmaking is also the product of the work of several people. Although often well planned, the art creating process in a film project can be quite disorderly. Considerable improvisation (in the meaning an openness for the emerging opportunities) is needed, both in front of the camera and "behind the camera." In this process communication is based on aesthetic knowledge, which is needed from the whole team. Such communication functions best in a trustful atmosphere. When the director takes the decisions that he or she has been listening to, taking in with several senses what’s going on in the team in order to be able to make a judgement. When improvising, the judgements are based on both rational decisions and on tacit knowledge, emotions and aesthetic knowledge that are acquired through bodily senses. As a leadership strategy, except hierarchy and networking, it is also vital for the director to be able to refrain from intervening, i.e. he or she has to be open to aesthetics of capitulation.

  • On-line 3D surface measurement of iron ore green pellets
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Computational Intelligence for Modelling, Control and Automation. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 0769527310
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ongoing research into an industrial prototype 3D imaging and analysis system is presented for non-contact measurement of the size of iron ore green pellets on the conveyor belt. The imaging hardware has been installed at a pellet production plant and captures 3D surface data of pellets on the conveyor belt. Segmentation methods based on mathematical morphology are applied to the 3D surface data to identify individual pellets. Pellet sizing based on the segmented 3D surface data has been performed and demonstrates a correlation with pellet sieve size.

  • The Use of DAO as a Marker for Histamine Intolerance: Measurements and Determinants in a Large Random Population-Based Survey
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - 2072-6643. ; 15:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Histamine intolerance (HIT) is a common adverse reaction to food where elimination and reintroduction of histamine-rich food is part of the investigation. Analysis of the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO) is sometimes used as an additional tool for diagnosis. This study aimed to describe the distribution of DAO in a large representative cohort of adults and to determine the association between DAO activity and possible associated factors. The study is based on the population-based West Sweden Asthma Study and includes 1051 subjects. Subjects underwent structured interviews including questions on demography, asthma, allergy symptoms, and lifestyle factors. Subjects were assessed for specific-IgE-antibodies and measurement of DAO activity in serum. Previously suggested cut-off levels for low values (<3 U/mL), normal values (>10 U/mL), and median levels of DAO were used. In the group of 1051 subjects, only a few presented reactions upon histamine intake, whereas 44% presented DAO levels below the suggested normal cut-off levels. BMI and age were shown to have an impact on DAO activity among women with increasing activity of DAO with increasing BMI and age. Among men, only increasing age was seen to have an impact on DAO levels. There was no difference in DAO levels with different sensitization status to common foods or airborne allergens. No association between DAO levels and reported symptoms to histamine-rich foods could be found. In conclusion, the determination of the DAO enzyme needs to be re-evaluated and may not be used as a valuable tool for histamine intolerance using current cut-off values. Further studies are needed to improve the use of DAO as a biomarker for histamine intolerance.
