  • Co-Evolution of Knowledge-Intensive Entrepreneurial Firms and Science Parks in an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem: Capabilities supporting BioBay at Suzhou Industry Park, China
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Zheijang University Seminar series.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Public-policy makers in emerging economics often want to stimulate knowledge- intensive industries, as a means to catch-up with innovation-based advanced economies. Literature on regional innovation systems and ecosystems have extensively studied agglomeration effects, and often with a focus upon the particular role of stimulating universities and scientific research. Yet funding science is not enough, due to what we identify as three complex issues related to the development of capabilities in firms and public agencies at the local-global interface. In catch-up theory, public policy which stimulates science-based industries can be seen as policy reacting to a short window of technological opportunity. In this paper, we are specifically focused upon public-private co-evolution in the biotech-pharmaceutical industry, which is highly dependent upon internal R&D and public science but also specific knowledge about national markets and global regulations. Based upon a seven-year qualitative study, we focus upon a science park in a second tier Chinese city, namely BioBay at Suzhou Industry Park. We propose a co-evolutionary process model of one element of the ecosystem, namely how increasing scale, learning and interactions between knowledge-intensive entrepreneurial firms and science parks lead to the development of both public and private capabilities to react upon this technological opportunity through entrepreneurship.

  • The Sixth Visual Object Tracking VOT2018 Challenge Results
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Computer Vision – ECCV 2018 Workshops. - Cham : Springer Publishing Company. - 9783030110086 - 9783030110093 ; , s. 3-53
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2018 is the sixth annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of over eighty trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in the recent years. The evaluation included the standard VOT and other popular methodologies for short-term tracking analysis and a “real-time” experiment simulating a situation where a tracker processes images as if provided by a continuously running sensor. A long-term tracking subchallenge has been introduced to the set of standard VOT sub-challenges. The new subchallenge focuses on long-term tracking properties, namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance. A new dataset has been compiled and a performance evaluation methodology that focuses on long-term tracking capabilities has been adopted. The VOT toolkit has been updated to support both standard short-term and the new long-term tracking subchallenges. Performance of the tested trackers typically by far exceeds standard baselines. The source code for most of the trackers is publicly available from the VOT page. The dataset, the evaluation kit and the results are publicly available at the challenge website (http://votchallenge.net).

  • Large-scale association analyses identify host factors influencing human gut microbiome composition
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 53:2, s. 156-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To study the effect of host genetics on gut microbiome composition, the MiBioGen consortium curated and analyzed genome-wide genotypes and 16S fecal microbiome data from 18,340 individuals (24 cohorts). Microbial composition showed high variability across cohorts: only 9 of 410 genera were detected in more than 95% of samples. A genome-wide association study of host genetic variation regarding microbial taxa identified 31 loci affecting the microbiome at a genome-wide significant (P < 5 x 10(-8)) threshold. One locus, the lactase (LCT) gene locus, reached study-wide significance (genome-wide association study signal: P = 1.28 x 10(-20)), and it showed an age-dependent association with Bifidobacterium abundance. Other associations were suggestive (1.95 x 10(-10) < P < 5 x 10(-8)) but enriched for taxa showing high heritability and for genes expressed in the intestine and brain. A phenome-wide association study and Mendelian randomization identified enrichment of microbiome trait loci in the metabolic, nutrition and environment domains and suggested the microbiome might have causal effects in ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis.

  • CHARMM-GUI Membrane Builder for Complex Biological Membrane Simulations with Glycolipids and Lipoglycans
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Theory and Computation. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1549-9618 .- 1549-9626. ; 15:1, s. 775-786
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Glycolipids (such as glycoglycerolipids, glycosphingolipids, and glycosylphosphatidylinositol) and lipoglycans (such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), lipooligosaccharides (LOS), mycobacterial lipoarabinomannan, and mycoplasma lipoglycans) are typically found on the surface of cell membranes and play crucial roles in various cellular functions. Characterizing their structure and dynamics at the molecular level is essential to understand their biological roles, but systematic generation of glycolipid and lipoglycan structures is challenging because of great variations in lipid structures and glycan sequences (i.e., carbohydrate types and their linkages). To facilitate the generation of all-atom glycolipid/LPS/LOS structures, we have developed Glycolipid Modeler and LPS Modeler in CHARMM-GUI (http://www.charmm-gui.org), a web-based interface that simplifies building of complex biological simulation systems. In addition, we have incorporated these modules into Membrane Builder so that users can readily build a complex symmetric or asymmetric biological membrane system with various glycolipids and LPS/LOS. These tools are expected to be useful in innovative and novel glycolipid/LPS/LOS modeling and simulation research by easing tedious and intricate steps in modeling complex biological systems and shall provide insight into structures, dynamics, and underlying mechanisms of complex glycolipid-/LPS-/LOS-containing biological membrane systems.

  • Sex differences in oncogenic mutational processes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sex differences have been observed in multiple facets of cancer epidemiology, treatment and biology, and in most cancers outside the sex organs. Efforts to link these clinical differences to specific molecular features have focused on somatic mutations within the coding regions of the genome. Here we report a pan-cancer analysis of sex differences in whole genomes of 1983 tumours of 28 subtypes as part of the ICGC/TCGA Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium. We both confirm the results of exome studies, and also uncover previously undescribed sex differences. These include sex-biases in coding and non-coding cancer drivers, mutation prevalence and strikingly, in mutational signatures related to underlying mutational processes. These results underline the pervasiveness of molecular sex differences and strengthen the call for increased consideration of sex in molecular cancer research.

  • Unraveling the formation mechanism of graphitic nitrogen-doping in thermally treated graphene with ammonia
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nitrogen-doped graphene (N-graphene) has attractive properties that has been widely studied over the years. However, its possible formation process still remains unclear. Here, we propose a highly feasible formation mechanism of the graphitic-N doing in thermally treated graphene with ammonia by performing ab initio molecular dynamic simulations at experimental conditions. Results show that among the commonly native point defects in graphene, only the single vacancy 5-9 and divacancy 555-777 have the desirable electronic structures to trap N-containing groups and to mediate the subsequent dehydrogenation processes. The local structure of the defective graphene in combining with the thermodynamic and kinetic effect plays a crucial role in dominating the complex atomic rearrangement to form graphitic-N which heals the corresponding defect perfectly. The importance of the symmetry, the localized force field, the interaction of multiple trapped N-containing groups, as well as the catalytic effect of the temporarily formed bridge-N are emphasized, and the predicted doping configuration agrees well with the experimental observation. Hence, the revealed mechanism will be helpful for realizing the targeted synthesis of N-graphene with reduced defects and desired properties.

  • Subject-adaptive Loose-fitting Smart Garment Platform for Human Activity Recognition
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACM transactions on sensor networks. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 1550-4867 .- 1550-4859. ; 19:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to recognize and detect changes in human posture is important in awide range of applications such as health care and human-computer interaction. Achieving this goal using loose-fit garments instrumented with sensors is particularly challenging, due to the complex interaction between garments and human body. Herein we present a method to detect and recognize human posture with casual loose-fitting smart garments integrated with highly sensitive, stretchable, optical transparent, and low-cost strain sensors. By attaching these sensors to an off-the-shelf casual jacket, we developed a smart loose-fitting sensing garment that enables posture recognition using a deep learning model, domain-adaptive Convolutional Neural Networks-Long Short-Term Memory (CNN-LSTM). This deep learning model overcame the noise and variation due to the complex interaction between loose-fitting garments and human body. Considering that users' labeled data are usually not available in the training stage, an additional domain discriminator path on the conventional CNN-LSTM model has been introduced to further improve the adaptability. To evaluate the potential of this loose-fitting smart garment, three case studies were conducted under realistic conditions: recognitions of human activities, stationary postures with random hand movements and slouch. Our results demonstrate the potential of the proposed smart garment system for practical applications.

  • Electromagnetically induced transparencies in a closed waveguide with high efficiency and wide frequency band
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 101:9, s. 093502-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose an effective method to alleviate the conflict between large group delay and wide frequency band in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) design. Two kinds of electrically induced transparency (E-IT) and magnetically induced transparency (M-IT) are proposed, respectively. Then an EIT with wide transparency window is developed by combining the independent E-IT and M-IT structures. All of the transparencies are designed in a closed waveguide system, and high efficiency is obtained at the same time. One sample is fabricated and the bandwidth is increased to more than 3 times without decrease of the group delay and increase of the size.

  • Understand and realize an "invisible gateway" in a classical way
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Progress In Electromagnetics Research. - 1070-4698 .- 1559-8985. ; 141, s. 739-749
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We create an invisible gateway simply by putting electric and magnetic superscatterers in a metallic waveguide. The characteristics of the electric and magnetic resonators are analyzed in a metallic hollow waveguide, and the dual-mode superscattering property is discussed in detail to broaden the bandwidth of the invisible gateway. Good agreement is achieved between the simulation and measurement for such an invisible gateway. The present work help readers understand easily how an invisible gateway works (or makes sense) in a classical way without using any complex metamaterial or complicated method of transformation optics.
