- A pair of rotational bands associated with the pi h(9/2) circle times nu i(13/2)(-1) configuration at lower spins and with the pi h(9/2) circle times nu i(13/2)(-3) configuration at higher spins is found in Tl-194. The two 4-quasiparticle bands show exceptionally close near-degeneracy in the excitation energies. Furthermore close similarity is also found in their alignments and B(M1)/B(E2) reduced transition probability ratios. Such close near-degeneracy probably indicates chiral geometry in the angular momentum space. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Genetic variants associated with platelet count are predictive of human disease and physiological markers

- Platelets play an important role in hemostasis and other aspects of vascular biology. We conducted a meta-analysis of platelet count GWAS using data on 536,974 Europeans and identified 577 independent associations. To search for mechanisms through which these variants affect platelets, we applied cis-expression quantitative trait locus, DEPICT and IPA analyses and assessed genetic sharing between platelet count and various traits using polygenic risk scoring. We found genetic sharing between platelet count and counts of other blood cells (except red blood cells), in addition to several other quantitative traits, including markers of cardiovascular, liver and kidney functions, height, and weight. Platelet count polygenic risk score was predictive of myeloproliferative neoplasms, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, hypertension, and benign prostate hyperplasia. Taken together, these results advance understanding of diverse aspects of platelet biology and how they affect biological processes in health and disease.

Collective and noncollective states in (120)Te

- High-spin states in (120)Te were populated in the reaction (80)Se((48)Ca, alpha 4n)(120)Te at a beam energy of 207 MeV and gamma-ray coincidences were measured using the Gammasphere spectrometer. The previously known level scheme is extended to higher spin and new interband transitions and side-feeding branches are established. Five highly deformed rotational bands, extending up to almost I = 50, are observed for the first time. The bands are compared with similar structures found recently in neighboring nuclei. The experimental results are interpreted within the framework of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model. Configuration assignments to several terminating states and to the high-spin bands are discussed.

- High-spin states in the odd-odd N = Z nucleus 3774Rb37 were studied using the 40Ca(40Ca,αnp) reaction. A previously observed odd-spin T = 0 band has been extended to Iπ = (31+) and an even-spin T = 0 band has been observed for the first time to Iπ = (22+); both have a π(g9/2)⊗ν(g9/2) structure. A strongly coupled low-spin T = 0, K = 3 band has been interpreted as being based upon a π[312]3/2 ⊗ ν[312]3/2 configuration. Cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov calculations, which are corrected for the t = 1 np-pair field by restoring isospin symmetry, reproduce the observed spectrum. These new results provide evidence for the existence of an isovector pair field that contains a neutron-proton component with the proper strength for ensuring isospin conservation.

- The neutron-deficient nucleus La-123 was studied via the Mo-92(Ca-40,2ap) reaction at a beam energy of 184 MeV. Previously known bands were extended to a much higher spin, and in two cases the structures are now observed near 40 (h) over bar. In addition, three new sequences were identified and linked into previously known bands. The lowest (pi,alpha)=(+,-1/2) structure displays characteristics similar to those of analogous bands in La-127,La-129, which have been proposed as examples of smooth band termination. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations were compared with the experimental data in La-123 to determine whether this band is approaching a terminating state as well.

- High-spin states have been populated in Te-110(52) via Ni-58(Ni-58,alpha 2p gamma) reactions at 240 and 250 MeV. The Gammasphere gamma-ray spectrometer was used in conjunction with the Microball charged-particle detector. The high-spin (I>30) collective level scheme of Te-110, up to similar to 45h, is discussed in this paper. Four new decoupled (Delta I=2) high-spin structures have been observed for the first time, together with two strongly coupled (Delta I=1) bands. These bands all show the characteristics of smooth band termination, and are discussed within the framework of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky approach.

- High-spin states have been studied in Pr-135(59), populated through the Cd-116(Na-23,4n) reaction at 115 MeV, using the Gammasphere gamma-ray spectrometer. The negative-parity yrast band has been significantly extended to spin similar to 45 (h) over bar and excitation energy 21.5 MeV, showing evidence for several rotational alignments. The positive-parity yrast band of Ce-135(58), populated through the p4n channel of this reaction, was also populated to spin similar to 38 (h) over bar and excitation energy 18 MeV. Cranking calculations indicate that these nuclei are soft with respect to the triaxiality parameter gamma and that several competing nuclear shapes occur at high spin.

Stable triaxiality at the highest spins in 138Nd and 139Nd

- The nuclei 138Nd and 139Nd have been studied at very high spins via the 48Ca+94Zr reaction. Several new rotational bands were observed, four in 138Nd and two in 139Nd. The J(2) moments of inertia calculated from the observed γ-ray energies are very small and almost constant, indicating that these bands are triaxial. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations reproduce the general behavior of the bands, supporting this interpretation and suggesting an approximately constant γ value of ∼ + 35° over a large spin range up to the highest observed spins. These bands and a few similar bands in other nuclei of the N≈80 region are a unique example of almost undisturbed triaxial bands.

Very high rotational frequencies and band termination in 73Br

- Rotational bands in 73Br have been investigated up to spins of I = 65/2 using the EUROBALL III spectrometer. One of the negative-parity bands displays the highest rotational frequency ℏω= 1.85 MeV reported to date in nuclei with A ≥ 25. At high frequencies, the experimental J(2) dynamic moment of inertia for all bands decreases to very low values, J(2) ≤ 10ℏ2 MeV-1. The bands are described in the configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model. The calculations indicate that one of the negative-parity bands is observed up to its terminating single-particle state at spin 63/2. This result establishes the first band termination in the A ≈ 70 mass region.
