  • Femtosecond free-electron laser x-ray diffraction data sets for algorithm development
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 20:4, s. 4149-4158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe femtosecond X-ray diffraction data sets of viruses and nanoparticles collected at the Linac Coherent Light Source. The data establish the first large benchmark data sets for coherent diffraction methods freely available to the public, to bolster the development of algorithms that are essential for developing this novel approach as a useful imaging technique. Applications are 2D reconstructions, orientation classification and finally 3D imaging by assembling 2D patterns into a 3D diffraction volume.

  • UV-induced dissociation of CH2BrI probed by intense femtosecond XUV pulses
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF PHYSICS B-ATOMIC MOLECULAR AND OPTICAL PHYSICS. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 55:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ultraviolet (UV)-induced dissociation and photofragmentation of gas-phase CH2BrI molecules induced by intense femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses at three different photon energies are studied by multi-mass ion imaging. Using a UV-pump-XUV-probe scheme, charge transfer between highly charged iodine ions and neutral CH2Br radicals produced by C-I bond cleavage is investigated. In earlier charge-transfer studies, the center of mass of the molecules was located along the axis of the bond cleaved by the pump pulse. In the present case of CH2BrI, this is not the case, thus inducing a rotation of the fragment. We discuss the influence of the rotation on the charge transfer process using a classical over-the-barrier model. Our modeling suggests that, despite the fact that the dissociation is slower due to the rotational excitation, the critical interatomic distance for charge transfer is reached faster. Furthermore, we suggest that charge transfer during molecular fragmentation may be modulated in a complex way.

  • In vivo protein crystallization opens new routes in structural biology
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nature Methods. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1548-7091 .- 1548-7105. ; 9:3, s. 259-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Protein crystallization in cells has been observed several times in nature. However, owing to their small size these crystals have not yet been used for X-ray crystallographic analysis. We prepared nano-sized in vivo–grown crystals of Trypanosoma brucei enzymes and applied the emerging method of free-electron laser-based serial femtosecond crystallography to record interpretable diffraction data. This combined approach will open new opportunities in structural systems biology.

  • Acoustic Flows in a Fluid Layer on a Vibrating Substrate
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Acoustical Physics. - : Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.. - 1063-7710 .- 1562-6865. ; 59:6, s. 640-643
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The field of radiation forces in a fluid layer on a solid substrate is calculated. This field is formed during propagation of surface capillary wave along a free surface. The wave is excited by substrate vibrations as a result of instability development. The structure of acoustic flows is studied. Their effect on small size particles and the possibilities of generating ordered structures from these particles are discussed.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acoustical Physics. - 1063-7710 .- 1562-6865. ; 61:2, s. 173-177
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We calculate the field of radiation forces in a cylindrical fluid layer on a solid substrate formed as a result of the action on a fluid of a capillary wave propagating from the axis along a free surface. We study the structure of acoustic flows excited by the radiation forces. We discuss the action of flows on small-sized particles and the possibilities of these particles to form ordered structures. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

  • Radiation damage in protein serial femtosecond crystallography using an x-ray free-electron laser
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 84:21, s. 214111-1-214111-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • X-ray free-electron lasers deliver intense femtosecond pulses that promise to yield high resolution diffraction data of nanocrystals before the destruction of the sample by radiation damage. Diffraction intensities of lysozyme nanocrystals collected at the Linac Coherent Light Source using 2 keV photons were used for structure determination by molecular replacement and analyzed for radiation damage as a function of pulse length and fluence. Signatures of radiation damage are observed for pulses as short as 70 fs. Parametric scaling used in conventional crystallography does not account for the observed effects.

  • Femtosecond dark-field imaging with an X-ray free electron laser
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 20:12, s. 13501-13512
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emergence of femtosecond diffractive imaging with X-ray lasers has enabled pioneering structural studies of isolated particles, such as viruses, at nanometer length scales. However, the issue of missing low frequency data significantly limits the potential of X-ray lasers to reveal sub-nanometer details of micrometer-sized samples. We have developed a new technique of dark-field coherent diffractive imaging to simultaneously overcome the missing data issue and enable us to harness the unique contrast mechanisms available in dark-field microscopy. Images of airborne particulate matter (soot) up to two microns in length were obtained using single-shot diffraction patterns obtained at the Linac Coherent Light Source, four times the size of objects previously imaged in similar experiments. This technique opens the door to femtosecond diffractive imaging of a wide range of micrometer-sized materials that exhibit irreproducible complexity down to the nanoscale, including airborne particulate matter, small cells, bacteria and gold-labeled biological samples.

  • Noise-robust coherent diffractive imaging with a single diffraction pattern
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 20:15, s. 16650-16661
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The resolution of single-shot coherent diffractive imaging at X-ray free-electron laser facilities is limited by the low signal-to-noise level of diffraction data at high scattering angles. The iterative reconstruction methods, which phase a continuous diffraction pattern to produce an image, must be able to extract information from these weak signals to obtain the best quality images. Here we show how to modify iterative reconstruction methods to improve tolerance to noise. The method is demonstrated with the hybrid input-output method on both simulated data and single-shot diffraction patterns taken at the Linac Coherent Light Source. • Few-photon multiple ionization of Ne and Ar by strong free-electron-laser pulses
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 98:20, s. 203001-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Few-photon multiple ionization of Ne and Ar atoms by strong vacuum ultraviolet laser pulses from the free-electron laser at Hamburg was investigated differentially with the Heidelberg reaction microscope. The light-intensity dependence of Ne2+ production reveals the dominance of nonsequential two-photon double ionization at intensities of I < 6x10(12) W/cm(2) and significant contributions of three-photon ionization as I increases. Ne2+ recoil-ion-momentum distributions suggest that two electrons absorbing "instantaneously" two photons are ejected most likely into opposite hemispheres with similar energies.
