  • Land use drives nitrous oxide dynamics in estuaries on regional and global scales
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Limnology and Oceanography. - : Wiley. - 0024-3590 .- 1939-5590. ; 65:8, s. 1903-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urban and agricultural development of coastal catchments is known to increase dissolved nitrogen inputs into estuaries; however, much less is known about how land use influences the production of the powerful greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). Here, we assess dissolved N2O dynamics in four nearby estuaries across a regional land use gradient and summarize the literature to put the observations into global perspective. During summer dry conditions, N2O saturation ranged from 131.4% +/- 45.0% in the most pristine system (28% modified) to 198.6% +/- 52.3% within the most modified urban system (91% modified). The N2O saturation in the wetter winter campaign was higher and more variable than the summer dry campaign (range 84.7-677.7%) likely due to direct transport of N2O into the estuaries from catchment runoff and/or produced through denitrification fueled by high nitrate inputs. During both seasons, N2O was lowest in areas adjacent to fringing mangroves and highest in upstream fresh/saltwater mixing areas. Coupling our results with previously published N2O data from 50 estuarine systems worldwide revealed that estuarine N2O increases concomitantly with catchment modification, dissolved inorganic nitrogen availability, and decreasing oxygen concentrations. Based on these results, a 1% increase in anthropogenic modification to global catchments (i.e., agricultural development and/or urbanization) may increase estuarine N2O saturation by 2.6% +/- 1.2%. These findings indicate that future estuarine N2O emissions are likely to increase as anthropogenic modification of coastal catchments intensifies.

  • A hard X-ray view of luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies in GOALS - I. AGN obscuration along the merger sequence
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 506:4, s. 5935-5950
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The merger of two or more galaxies can enhance the inflow of material from galactic scales into the close environments of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), obscuring and feeding the supermassive black hole (SMBH). Both recent simulations and observations of AGN in mergers have confirmed that mergers are related to strong nuclear obscuration. However, it is still unclear how AGN obscuration evolves in the last phases of the merger process. We study a sample of 60 luminous and ultra-luminous IR galaxies (U/LIRGs) from the GOALS sample observed by NuSTAR. We find that the fraction of AGNs that are Compton thick (CT;N-H >= 10(24)cm(-2) ) peaks at at a late merger stage, prior to coalescence, when the nuclei have projected separations (d(sep)) of 0.4-6 kpc. A similar peak is also observed in the median N-H [[(1.6 +/- 0.5) x 10(24) cm(-2)].]. The vast majority (85(-9)(+7) per cent)) of the AGNs in the final merger stages (d(sep) less than or similar to 10 kpc) are heavily obscured (N-H = 10(23) cm(-2)), and the median N-H of the accreting SMBHs in our sample is systematically higher than that of local hard X-ray-selected AGN, regardless of the merger stage. This implies that these objects have very obscured nuclear environments, with the gas almost completely covering the AGN in late mergers. CT AGNs tend to have systematically higher absorption-corrected X-ray luminosities than less obscured sources. This could either be due to an evolutionary effect, with more obscured sources accreting more rapidly because they have more gas available in their surroundings, or to a selection bias. The latter scenario would imply that we are still missing a large fraction of heavily obscured, lower luminosity (L2-10 less than or similar to 10(43) erg s(-1)) AGNs in U/LIRGs.

  • Parental Burnout Around the Globe : a 42-Country Study.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Affective science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2662-205X .- 2662-2041. ; 2, s. 58-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High levels of stress in the parenting domain can lead to parental burnout, a condition that has severe consequences for both parents and children. It is not yet clear, however, whether parental burnout varies by culture, and if so, why it might do so. In this study, we examined the prevalence of parental burnout in 42 countries (17,409 parents; 71% mothers; Mage = 39.20) and showed that the prevalence of parental burnout varies dramatically across countries. Analyses of cultural values revealed that individualistic cultures, in particular, displayed a noticeably higher prevalence and mean level of parental burnout. Indeed, individualism plays a larger role in parental burnout than either economic inequalities across countries, or any other individual and family characteristic examined so far, including the number and age of children and the number of hours spent with them. These results suggest that cultural values in Western countries may put parents under heightened levels of stress.Supplementary Information: The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s42761-020-00028-4.

  • Three reasons why parental burnout is more prevalent in individualistic countries : a mediation study in 36 countries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology. - : Springer Nature. - 0933-7954 .- 1433-9285. ; , s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe prevalence of parental burnout, a condition that has severe consequences for both parents and children, varies dramatically across countries and is highest in Western countries characterized by high individualism.MethodIn this study, we examined the mediators of the relationship between individualism measured at the country level and parental burnout measured at the individual level in 36 countries (16,059 parents).ResultsThe results revealed three mediating mechanisms, that is, self-discrepancies between socially prescribed and actual parental selves, high agency and self-directed socialization goals, and low parental task sharing, by which individualism leads to an increased risk of burnout among parents.ConclusionThe results confrm that the three mediators under consideration are all involved, and that mediation was higher for self-discrepancies between socially prescribed and actual parental selves, then parental task sharing, and lastly selfdi-rected socialization goals. The results provide some important indications of how to prevent parental burnout at the societal level in Western countries.

  • Blue Carbon Storage Capacity of Temperate Eelgrass (Zostera marina) Meadows
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Global Biogeochemical Cycles. - 0886-6236 .- 1944-9224. ; 32:10, s. 1457-1475
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the importance of coastal ecosystems for the global carbon budgets, knowledge of their carbon storage capacity and the factors driving variability in storage capacity is still limited. Here we provide an estimate on the magnitude and variability of carbon stocks within a widely distributed marine foundation species throughout its distribution area in temperate Northern Hemisphere. We sampled 54 eelgrass (Zostera marina) meadows, spread across eight ocean margins and 36° of latitude, to determine abiotic and biotic factors influencing organic carbon (Corg) stocks in Zostera marina sediments. The Corg stocks (integrated over 25-cm depth) showed a large variability and ranged from 318 to 26,523 g C/m2 with an average of 2,721 g C/m2. The projected Corg stocks obtained by extrapolating over the top 1 m of sediment ranged between 23.1 and 351.7 Mg C/ha, which is in line with estimates for other seagrasses and other blue carbon ecosystems. Most of the variation in Corg stocks was explained by five environmental variables (sediment mud content, dry density and degree of sorting, and salinity and water depth), while plant attributes such as biomass and shoot density were less important to Corg stocks. Carbon isotopic signatures indicated that at most sites <50% of the sediment carbon is derived from seagrass, which is lower than reported previously for seagrass meadows. The high spatial carbon storage variability urges caution in extrapolating carbon storage capacity between geographical areas as well as within and between seagrass species.

  • Theoretical prediction of binding modes and hot sequences for allopsoralen-DNA interaction
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Chemical Physics Letters. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0009-2614 .- 1873-4448. ; 450:1-3, s. 127-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Molecular docking studies of two duplex DNA sequences as target fragments and allopsoralen as ligand were performed. The calculated interaction energies showed that the ligand can be docked into the minor groove as well as become intercalated. However, unlike psoralen, allopsoralen preferred binding mode for non-poly-TA sequences is minor groove binding. Calculated energies for intercalation between different base pairs suggest that the predicted sequence selectivity for allopsoralen is analogous to that observed for psoralen. Intercalation is favored in 5'-TpA sites in poly-TA sequences.

  • Theoretical study of sequence selectivity and preferred binding mode of psoralen with DNA
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Research Letters in Physical Chemistry. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1687-6873 .- 1687-6881. ; , s. Article number 60623-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Psoralen interaction with two models of DNA was investigated using molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics methods. Calculated energies of minor groove binding and intercalation were compared in order to define a preferred binding mode for the ligand. We found that both binding modes are possible, explaining the low efficiency for monoadduct formation from intercalated ligands. A comparison between the interaction energy for intercalation between different base pairs suggests that the observed sequence selectivity is due to favorable intercalation in 5'-TpA in (AT)n sequences.
