  • Stability and Cooling of the C72- Dianion
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 131:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied the stability of the smallest long-lived all carbon molecular dianion (C72-) in new time domains and with a single ion at a time using a cryogenic electrostatic ion-beam storage ring. We observe spontaneous electron emission from internally excited dianions on millisecond timescales and monitor the survival of single colder C72- molecules on much longer timescales. We find that their intrinsic lifetime exceeds several minutes - 6 orders of magnitude longer than established from earlier experiments on C72-. This is consistent with our calculations of vertical electron detachment energies predicting one inherently stable isomer and one isomer which is stable or effectively stable behind a large Coulomb barrier for C72-→C7-+e- separation.

  • Microneurographic assessment of C-fibre function in aged healthy subjects
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physiology. - : Wiley. - 0022-3751 .- 1469-7793. ; 587:Pt 2, s. 419-428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Physiological changes in the nervous system occur with ageing. Both a decline of function and a decrease in the number of C-fibres in the skin have been reported for healthy aged subjects. With the use of microneurographic recordings from single C-fibres in humans we have compared the sensory and axonal properties of these neurones in young and aged healthy subjects. A total of 146 C-fibres were recorded from the common peroneal nerve in young subjects (mean age 24.7 years) and 230 C-fibres were recorded in aged subjects (mean age 56.2 years). In aged subjects, changes were found in the composition of the C-fibre population and in sensory and axonal properties. The relative incidence of afferent to efferent C-fibres was relatively constant independent of the age of subjects. The ratio of mechano-responsive to mechano-insensitive nociceptors was approximately 8 : 2 in the young controls while in aged subjects it was 7 : 3. In aged subjects 13% of the fibres showed atypical discharge characteristics, while this was not observed in young subjects. Spontaneous activity, sensitization and loss of sensory function were found regularly. Changes in functions of the conductile membrane were also observed in fibres from aged subjects. The degree of activity-dependent conduction velocity slowing in response to high frequency stimulation (2 Hz) was more pronounced, while the normalization of conduction velocity subsequent to high frequency stimulation was protracted. We found that both sensitization and desensitization or degeneration of afferent C-fibres occur with age, but are still rare compared to patients with neuropathy. The changes in the axonal properties of C-fibres in aged subjects are compatible with hypoexcitability of the fibres. These findings are important for the understanding and differential diagnoses regarding pathological processes and normal ageing.

  • Kinetics of absorbance and anisotropy upon excited state relaxation in the reaction center core complex of a green sulfur bacterium
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Photosynthesis Research. ; 65:3, s. 261-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Properties of the excited states in reaction center core (RCC) complexes of the green sulfur bacterium Prosthecochloris aestuarii were studied by means of femtosecond time-resolved isotropic and anisotropic absorption difference spectroscopy at 275 K. Selective excitation of the different transitions of the complex resulted in the rapid establishment of a thermal equilibrium. At about 1 ps after excitation, the energy was located at the lowest energy transition, BChl a 835. Time constants varying between 0.26 and 0.46 ps were observed for the energy transfer steps leading to this equilibrium. These transfer steps were also reflected in changes in polarization. Our measurements indicate that downhill energy transfer towards excited BChl a 835 occurs via the energetically higher spectral forms BChl a 809 and BChl a 820. Low values of the anisotropy of about 0.07 were found in the `two-color' measurements at 820 and 835 nm upon excitation at 800 nm, whereas the `one-color' kinetics showed much higher anisotropies. Charge separation occurred with a time constant varying between 20 and 30 ps.

  • Herschel/HIFI Observations of IRC+10216: Water Vapor in the Inner Envelope of a Carbon-Rich Asymptotic Giant Branch Star
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - 2041-8213 .- 2041-8205. ; 727:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the results of observations of 10 rotational transitions of water vapor toward the carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star IRC+10216 (CW Leonis), carried out with Herschel's HIFI instrument. Each transition was securely detected by means of observations using the dual beam switch mode of HIFI. The measured line ratios imply that water vapor is present in the inner outflow at small distances (

  • The Widespread Occurrence of Water Vapor in the Circumstellar Envelopes of Carbon-Rich Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars: First Results From a Survey With Herschel/HIFI
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - 2041-8213 .- 2041-8205. ; 727:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the preliminary results of a survey for water vapor in a sample of eight C stars with large mid-IR continuum fluxes: V384 Per, CIT 6, V Hya, Y CVn, IRAS 15194-5115, V Cyg, S Cep, and IRC+40540. This survey, performed using the HIFI instrument on board the Herschel Space Observatory, entailed observations of the lowest transitions of both ortho-and para-water: the 556.936 GHz 1(10)-1(01) and 1113.343 GHz 1(11)-0(00) transitions, respectively. Water vapor was unequivocally detected in all eight of the target stars. Prior to this survey, IRC+10216 was the only carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star from which thermal water emissions had been discovered, in that case with the use of the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS). Our results indicate that IRC+10216 is not unusual, except insofar as its proximity to Earth leads to a large line flux that was detectable with SWAS. The water spectral line widths are typically similar to those of CO rotational lines, arguing against the vaporization of a Kuiper Belt analog being the general explanation for water vapor in carbon-rich AGB stars. There is no apparent correlation between the ratio of the integrated water line fluxes to the 6.3 mu m continuum flux-a ratio which measures the water outflow rate-and the total mass-loss rate for the stars in our sample.

    • The GBAR experiment aims to measure the gravitational acceleration of antihydrogen (H) over bar. It will use (H) over bar (+) ions formed by the interaction of antiprotons with a dense positronium cloud, which will require about 1010 positrons to produce one (H) over bar (+). We present the first results on the positron accumulation, reaching 3.8 +/- 0.4x10(8) e(+) collected in 560 s.

  • Genome-wide Study of Atrial Fibrillation Identifies Seven Risk Loci and Highlights Biological Pathways and Regulatory Elements Involved in Cardiac Development
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Human Genetics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9297 .- 1537-6605. ; 102:1, s. 103-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia and a major risk factor for stroke, heart failure, and premature death. The pathogenesis of AF remains poorly understood, which contributes to the current lack of highly effective treatments. To understand the genetic variation and biology underlying AF, we undertook a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 6,337 AF individuals and 61,607 AF-free individuals from Norway, including replication in an additional 30,679 AF individuals and 278,895 AF-free individuals. Through genotyping and dense imputation mapping from whole-genome sequencing, we tested almost nine million genetic variants across the genome and identified seven risk loci, including two novel loci. One novel locus (lead single-nucleotide variant [SNV] rs12614435; p = 6.76 × 10−18) comprised intronic and several highly correlated missense variants situated in the I-, A-, and M-bands of titin, which is the largest protein in humans and responsible for the passive elasticity of heart and skeletal muscle. The other novel locus (lead SNV rs56202902; p = 1.54 × 10−11) covered a large, gene-dense chromosome 1 region that has previously been linked to cardiac conduction. Pathway and functional enrichment analyses suggested that many AF-associated genetic variants act through a mechanism of impaired muscle cell differentiation and tissue formation during fetal heart development.

  • Ultrafast Time-Resolved X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy of Ferrioxalate Photolysis with a Laser Plasma X-ray Source and Microcalorimeter Array
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1948-7185. ; 8:5, s. 1099-1104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The detailed pathways of photoactivity on ultrafast time scales are a topic of contemporary interest. Using a tabletop apparatus based on a laser plasma X-ray source and an array of cryogenic microcalorimeter X-ray detectors, we measured a transient X-ray absorption spectrum during the ferrioxalate photoreduction reaction. With these high-efficiency detectors, we observe the Fe K edge move to lower energies and the amplitude of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure reduce, consistent with a photoreduction mechanism in which electron transfer precedes disassociation. These results are compared to previously published transient X-ray absorption measurements on the same reaction and found to be consistent with the results from Ogi et al. and inconsistent with the results of Chen et al. (Ogi, Y.; et al. Struct. Dyn. 2015, 2, 034901; Chen, J.; Zhang, H.; Tomov, I. V.; Ding, X.; Rentzepis, P. M. Chem. Phys. Lett. 2007, 437, 50-55). We provide quantitative limits on the Fe-O bond length change. Finally, we review potential improvements to our measurement technique, highlighting the future potential of tabletop X-ray science using microcalorimeter sensors.
