  • High-temperature oxidation behaviour of nanostructure surface layered austenitic stainless steel
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332. ; 581
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study investigates the high-temperature oxidation behaviour of nanostructure surface layered AISI 304L stainless steel. A severely deformed layer of ∼300 μm thickness, consisting of nanoscale grains (∼40 nm size) in the topmost region, is successfully developed using the surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) process. The SMATed layer is substantially stable up to 700 °C; however, the surface hardness is reduced by ∼37% at 800 °C for 25 h oxidation duration. Glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed the considerable difference in the chemistry and elemental distribution across the oxide scale of SMATed and non-SMATed specimens. Adherent, denser, and thinner scale, dominated by nanocrystals of Cr- and Mn-rich oxides, is formed on the SMATed steel. However, the Fe-oxide dominated scale containing micro-crystals is found on the non-SMATed specimens, which shows noticeable exfoliation. A high density of grain boundaries and lattice defects in the SMATed layer display admirable reactive diffusion properties of Cr and Mn during oxidation of steel, instigating the formation of a protective oxide scale. The SMATed specimens exhibit multiple zones in the oxide scale: (i) Cr/Mn depleted outer layer, (ii) Cr-/Mn-rich inner layer, and (iii) gradually decreasing Cr/Mn region.

  • Revealing asymmetrical dust distribution in the inner regions of HD 141569

    • Context. The combination of high-contrast imaging with spectroscopy and polarimetry offers a pathway to studying the grain distribution and properties of debris disks in exquisite detail. Here, we focus on the case of a gas-rich debris disk around HD 141569A, which features a multiple-ring morphology first identified with SPHERE in the near-infrared.Aims. We obtained polarimetric differential imaging with SPHERE in the H-band to compare the scattering properties of the innermost ring at 44 au with former observations in total intensity with the same instrument. In polarimetric imaging, we observed that the intensity of the ring peaks in the south-east, mostly in the forward direction, whereas in total intensity imaging, the ring is detected only at the south. This noticeable characteristic suggests a non-uniform dust density in the ring. With these two sets of images, we aim to study the distribution of the dust to solve for the actual dust distribution.Methods. We implemented a density function varying azimuthally along the ring and generated synthetic images both in polarimetry and in total intensity, which are then compared to the actual data. The search for the best-fit model was performed both with a grid-based and an MCMC approach. Using the outcome of this modelization, we further measured the polarized scattering phase function for the observed scattering angle between 33 degrees and 147 degrees as well as the spectral reflectance of the southern part of the ring between 0.98 and 2.1 mu m. We tentatively derived the grain properties by comparing these quantities with MCFOST models and assuming Mie scattering.Results. We find that the dust density peaks in the south-west at an azimuthal angle of 220 degrees similar to 238 degrees with a rather broad width of 61 degrees similar to 127 degrees. The difference in the intensity distributions observed in polarimetry and total intensity is the result of this particular morphology. Although there are still uncertainties that remain in the determination of the anisotropic scattering factor, the implementation of an azimuthal density variation to fit the data proved to be robust. Upon elaborating on the origin of this dust density distribution, we conclude that it could be the result of a massive collision when we account for the effect of the high gas mass that is present in the system on the dynamics of grains. In terms of grain composition, our preliminary interpretation indicates a mixture of porous sub-micron sized astro-silicate and carbonaceous grains.Conclusions. The SPHERE observations have allowed, for the first time, for meaningful constraints to be placed on the dust distribution beyond the standard picture of a uniform ring-like debris disk. However, future studies with a multiwavelength approach and additional detailed modeling would be required to better characterize the grain properties in the HD 141569 system.

  • Two-gap s± -wave superconductivity at an oxide interface
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 105:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • After half a century of debate, superconductivity in doped SrTiO3 has come to the fore again with the discovery of interfacial superconductivity in the LaAlO3 /SrTiO3 heterostructures. While these interfaces share the interesting properties of bulk SrTiO3, quantum confinement generates a complex band structure involving bands with different orbital symmetries whose occupancy is tunable by electrostating doping. Multigap superconductivity has been predicted to emerge in LaAlO3 /SrTiO3 at large doping, with a Bose-Einstein condensation character at the Lifshtiz transition. In this article, we report on the measurement of the upper critical magnetic field Hc2 of superconducting (110)-oriented LaAlO3 /SrTiO3 heterostructures and evidence a two-gap superconducting regime at high doping. Our results are quantitatively explained by a theoretical model based on the formation of an unconventional s±-wave superconducting state with a repulsive coupling between the two condensates.

  • Unveiling interactions of non-metallic inclusions within advanced ultra-high-strength steel : A spectro-microscopic determination and first-principles elucidation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scripta Materialia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1359-6462. ; 197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Determining non-metallic inclusions (NMIs) are essential to engineer ultra-high-strength steel as they play decisive role on performance and critical to probe via conventional techniques. Herein, advanced Synchrotron X-ray absorption coupled with photoemission electron microscopy and first-principles calculations are employed to provide the structure, local bonding structure and electronic properties of several NMI model systems and their interaction mechanism within and the steel matrix. B K-, N K-, Ca L2,3- and Ti L2,3-edge spectra show that the additional B prefers to result in h-BN exhibiting strong interaction with Ca2+. Such Ca2+-based phases also stabilize through TiN, revealing the irregular coordination of Ca2+. Observed intriguing no interaction between TiN and BN is further supported with the first-principles calculations, wherein unfavorable combination of TiN and h-BN and stabilization of bigger sized Ca2+-based inclusions have been found. These observations can help to optimize the interaction mechanism among various inclusions as well as steel matrix.

  • Dynorphin A (1-17) induces apoptosis in striatal neurons in vitro through alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionate/kainate receptor-mediated cytochrome c release and caspase-3 activation.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Neuroscience. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-4522 .- 1873-7544. ; 122:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dynorphin A (1-17), an endogenous opioid neuropeptide, can have pathophysiological consequences at high concentrations through actions involving glutamate receptors. Despite evidence of excitotoxicity, the basic mechanisms underlying dynorphin-induced cell death have not been explored. To address this question, we examined the role of caspase-dependent apoptotic events in mediating dynorphin A (1-17) toxicity in embryonic mouse striatal neuron cultures. In addition, the role of opioid and/or glutamate receptors were assessed pharmacologically using dizocilpine maleate (MK(+)801), a non-equilibrium N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist; 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione, a competitive alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionate (AMPA)/kainate antagonist; or (-)-naloxone, a general opioid antagonist. The results show that dynorphin A (1-17) (>or=10 nM) caused concentration-dependent increases in caspase-3 activity that were accompanied by mitochondrial release of cytochrome c and the subsequent death of cultured mouse striatal neurons. Moreover, dynorphin A-induced neurotoxicity and caspase-3 activation were significantly attenuated by the cell permeable caspase inhibitor, caspase-3 inhibitor-II (z-DEVD-FMK), further suggesting an apoptotic cascade involving caspase-3. AMPA/kainate receptor blockade significantly attenuated dynorphin A-induced cytochrome c release and/or caspase-3 activity, while NMDA or opioid receptor blockade typically failed to prevent the apoptotic response. Last, dynorphin-induced caspase-3 activation was mimicked by the ampakine CX546 [1-(1,4-benzodioxan-6-ylcarbonyl)piperidine], which suggests that the activation of AMPA receptor subunits may be sufficient to mediate toxicity in striatal neurons. These findings provide novel evidence that dynorphin-induced striatal neurotoxicity is mediated by a caspase-dependent apoptotic mechanism that largely involves AMPA/kainate receptors.
