  • Housing matters in very old age - yet differently due to ADL dependence level differences.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1651-2014 .- 1103-8128. ; 14:1, s. 3-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to support the development of optimal housing options for older people, we need to increase our understanding of relations between aspects of housing and aspects of health in old and very old age. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to explore whether and how aspects of housing are related to life satisfaction and perceived health among very old, single-living Swedish people. Based on survey study data from the ENABLE-AGE Project (n = 397), correlation and regression analyses were performed with sub-groups of participants defined according to different levels of ADL dependence. The results showed that the aspects of housing related to life satisfaction and perceived health were different in the three ADL sub-groups. Among objective aspects of housing, accessibility problems influenced life satisfaction as well as perceived health, yet differently among the sub-groups. As concerns perceived aspects of housing, aspects of meaning of home (MOH) were influential on perceived health in several sub-groups, while only among persons dependent in I-ADL were social aspects of MOH related to life satisfaction. Among persons dependent in I-ADL, external housing-related control beliefs also played a role. In conclusion, the results indicate that housing matters in very old age, yet differently due to ADL dependence-level differences. Most importantly, different aspects of housing seem to play a role in different phases of the trajectory of disability in very old age, while longitudinal studies are needed to verify these indicative results.

  • People with Parkinson's disease and housing issues : A scoping review
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Health Science Reports. - : Wiley. - 2398-8835. ; 5:2
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Aims: There is evidence that housing issues are associated with health outcomes as people age, but little is known in this respect regarding the specific population of people with Parkinson's disease (PD). The objective of this literature review was to identify and analyze the knowledge gap concerning people with PD and housing issues. Methods: Applying established guidelines for scoping reviews, a systematic literature search was done in relevant databases applying the following inclusion criteria: empirical studies including human participants with PD, addressing housing in the objective, hypothesis or research questions, and published in English in peer-reviewed journals. Data were analyzed using a framework of domains, factors, and variables influencing housing decisions among older people. Results: Twelve publications were identified, originating from a few researchers and with very different scopes. While the social dimension was scarcely attended to, the publications addressed all six domains of the analytical framework and 30% of the variables specified therein, but many were only used for descriptive purposes. Conclusion: This scoping review reveals that there is a substantial knowledge gap regarding people with PD and housing issues. The knowledge gap is most evident in the social dimension, while the studies identified provide more information relating to the health dimension than what is the case in research on housing targeting the general aging population. Because society urgently needs evidence to support the development of housing policies and provide suitable housing for this vulnerable population, more research targeting people with PD and housing issues is warranted.

  • Synthesizing ENABLE-AGE Research Findings to Suggest Evidence-Based Home and Health Interventions
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Housing for the Elderly. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0276-3893 .- 1540-353X. ; 30:3, s. 330-343
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the quest for knowledge translation from research to practice and policy contexts is growing stronger, researchers need to develop strategies for synthesizing research findings. Since home environments constitute an important context for the delivery of health care and social services to older adults and people aging with disabilities, research in this field can serve as an example for such endeavors. Using 35 original publications and one unpublished doctoral dissertation based on the European ENABLE-AGE Project, we aimed to demonstrate a systematic approach to synthesize research findings generated by large research projects as the basis for evidence-based interventions. The synthesized findings highlighted the complex interactions between objective and perceived aspects of housing and aspects of health in very old age, impacting on, for example, residential decision making. Independence in daily activity is influenced by the sociocultural care and service context. A familiar and safe neighborhood, a social network, and a good supply of services are important to perceptions of participation. Going further, we suggest housing-related interventions that address problems and challenges related to ongoing demographic changes. This article contributes to the development of strategies for knowledge translation, connecting research and practice and policy contexts struggling to meet the societal challenges that accompany population aging.
