  • Assessment of hydrogen peroxide as a bioindicator of stress in seaweed aquaculture

    • The rapid expansion in commercial seaweed farming has highlighted the need for more effective monitoring methods, and health diagnostics. The production of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a trait that is tied to all major macroalgal groups and holds significance both for its involvement in the oxidative stress response and in the production of climatically relevant gases such as halocarbons. Observations of increased production of H2O2 by plants as a stress response, along with its comparative stability and ease of quantification in seawater in comparison to other ROS, suggest that H2O2 could be used as an indicator of health. In this study we characterized aqueous H2O2 dynamics across a diel cycle, in response to small shifts in light and temperature, as well as when exposed to acute stress. Our results reveal that exposure to acute stressors leads to rapid and sustained concentrations of H2O2 that are orders of magnitude higher than changes in H2O2 concentrations observed throughout the day. These findings provide tantalizing evidence that monitoring H2O2 could be used as a health indicator in seaweed aquaculture and serve as an early warning sign of stress.

    • We have recently developed a new modeling capability to embed the implicit particle-in-cell (PIC) model iPIC3D into the Block-Adaptive-Tree-Solarwind-Roe-Upwind-Scheme magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. The MHD with embedded PIC domains (MHD-EPIC) algorithm is a two-way coupled kinetic-fluid model. As one of the very first applications of the MHD-EPIC algorithm, we simulate the interaction between Jupiter's magnetospheric plasma and Ganymede's magnetosphere. We compare the MHD-EPIC simulations with pure Hall MHD simulations and compare both model results with Galileo observations to assess the importance of kinetic effects in controlling the configuration and dynamics of Ganymede's magnetosphere. We find that the Hall MHD and MHD-EPIC solutions are qualitatively similar, but there are significant quantitative differences. In particular, the density and pressure inside the magnetosphere show different distributions. For our baseline grid resolution the PIC solution is more dynamic than the Hall MHD simulation and it compares significantly better with the Galileo magnetic measurements than the Hall MHD solution. The power spectra of the observed and simulated magnetic field fluctuations agree extremely well for the MHD-EPIC model. The MHD-EPIC simulation also produced a few flux transfer events (FTEs) that have magnetic signatures very similar to an observed event. The simulation shows that the FTEs often exhibit complex 3-D structures with their orientations changing substantially between the equatorial plane and the Galileo trajectory, which explains the magnetic signatures observed during the magnetopause crossings. The computational cost of the MHD-EPIC simulation was only about 4 times more than that of the Hall MHD simulation. Key Points

    • Lipoamino acid and liposaccharide conjugates of somatostatin analogue TT-232 were synthesized to modify the physicochemical properties of the parent peptide. The relative position, the number, and the nature of the lipid and/or saccharide moieties were varied. Experiments in vitro clearly showed that many compounds modified at the N- and/or C-terminus with lipid or sugar moieties retained the biological activity of the parent compound. An interesting construct was synthesized containing lipid and sugar units at opposite ends of the somatostatin analogue, so that the entire molecule could be considered as an amphipathic surfactant.

    • In recent years, several technological innovations have emerged to improve the rehabilitation of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Among them, robotic orthosis, also known as human exoskeletons, are prominent devices for lower limb therapy. Since the early 2000s, numerous clinical studies have begun to investigate the efficacy of these devices, demonstrating the beneficial effects of exoskeletons regarding the prevention and deceleration of the progression of complications following spinal cord injury and subsequent immobilization. Previous works also deal with physiological, psycho-social and social effects, and presents possible risk factors following SCI. In this paper, the main results of the relevant international research is reviewed, the structure and operation of the first devices (ReWalk (TM) P6.0) in Hungary are presented, also, the main modalities of robotic assisted rehabilitation activity at international level are demonstrated. Based on the international results, the training protocol for a multicentre controlled clinical trial, involving the University of Pecs and the National Institute for Medical Rehabilitation is presented in this work. According to our hypothesis, high intensity exoskeleton-assisted complex rehabilitation induces positive changes in bone density, in the urogenital and gastrointestinal tract. Changes are quantified by objective urodynamic and defecative parameters. The difference in bone density is assessed with DEXA scan, and the effects on mental status are evaluated by questionnaires. The aim of this research is to promote a complementary therapeutic procedure based on validated results for SCI patients with paraplegia, also to establish recommendations for home use of the robotic exoskeletons, and to conceivably join to international scientific research projects.
