  • Telomere-to-telomere and haplotype-resolved genome assembly of the Chinese cork oak (Quercus variabilis)

    • The Quercus variabilis, a deciduous broadleaved tree species, holds significant ecological and economical value. While a chromosome-level genome for this species has been made available, it remains riddled with unanchored sequences and gaps. In this study, we present a nearly complete comprehensive telomere-to-telomere (T2T) and haplotype-resolved reference genome for Q. variabilis. This was achieved through the integration of ONT ultra-long reads, PacBio HiFi long reads, and Hi-C data. The resultant two haplotype genomes measure 789 Mb and 768 Mb in length, with a contig N50 of 65 Mb and 56 Mb, and were anchored to 12 allelic chromosomes. Within this T2T haplotype-resolved assembly, we predicted 36,830 and 36,370 protein-coding genes, with 95.9% and 96.0% functional annotation for each haplotype genome. The availability of the T2T and haplotype-resolved reference genome lays a solid foundation, not only for illustrating genome structure and functional genomics studies but also to inform and facilitate genetic breeding and improvement of cultivated Quercus species.

  • Electrostatic Waves Around a Magnetopause Reconnection Secondary Electron Diffusion Region Modulated by Whistler and Lower-Hybrid Waves

    • We investigate electrostatic waves in a magnetopause reconnection event around a secondary electron diffusion region. Near the current sheet mid-plane, parallel electron beam-mode waves are modulated by whistler waves. We conclude that the anisotropy of energized electrons in the reconnection exhaust excites whistler waves, which produce spatially modulated electron beams through nonlinear Landau resonance, and these beams excite beam-mode electrostatic waves. In the separatrix region, parallel propagating electrostatic waves associated with field-aligned electron beams and perpendicular propagating electron cyclotron harmonic waves with loss cone distributions exhibit modulation frequencies in the lower-hybrid wave (LHW) frequency range. We infer that LHWs scatter electrons to produce beams and alter loss cones to modulate electrostatic waves. The results advance our understanding about the regimes and mechanisms of electrostatic waves in reconnection, with an emphasis on their coupling with lower-frequency electromagnetic waves. Magnetic reconnection is an important energy dissipation process at the Earth's dayside magnetopause. In its central region, plasmas deviate from the thermal equilibrium and form structured distribution functions, which excite plasma waves. We investigate high-frequency electrostatic waves in an event, where the waves are associated with electron beam-plasma interaction or anisotropy of distribution functions. We find that electrostatic waves are driven and modulated by lower-frequency waves, as the latter alters the particle distribution functions. The results help us understand how various processes couple with each other to achieve the energy dissipation.   • Application of the principle of maximum conformality to the hadroproduction of the Higgs boson at the LHC

    • We present improved perturbative QCD (pQCD) predictions for Higgs boson hadroproduction at the LHC by applying the principle of maximum conformality (PMC), a procedure which resums the pQCD series using the renormalization group (RG), thereby eliminating the dependence of the predictions on the choice of the renormalization scheme while minimizing sensitivity to the initial choice of the renormalization scale. In previous pQCD predictions for Higgs boson hadroproduction, it has been conventional to assume that the renormalization scale mu(r) of the QCD coupling sigma(s)(mu(r)) is the Higgs mass and then to vary this choice over the range 1/2m(H) < mu(r) < 2m(H) in order to estimate the theory uncertainty. However, this error estimate is only sensitive to the nonconformal beta terms in the pQCD series, and thus it fails to correctly estimate the theory uncertainty in cases where a pQCD series has large higher-order contributions, as is the case for Higgs boson hadroproduction. Furthermore, this ad hoc choice of scale and range gives pQCD predictions which depend on the renormalization scheme being used, in contradiction to basic RG principles. In contrast, after applying the PMC, we obtain next-to-next-to-leading-order RG resummed pQCD predictions for Higgs boson hadroproduction which are renormalization-scheme independent and have minimal sensitivity to the choice of the initial renormalization scale. Taking m(H) = 125 GeV, the PMC predictions for the pp -> HX Higgs inclusive hadroproduction cross sections for various LHC center-of-mass energies are sigma(Incl vertical bar 7 TeV) = 21.21(-1.32)(+1.36) pb, sigma(Incl vertical bar 8 TeV) = 27.37(-1.59)(+1.65) pb, and sigma I-ncl vertical bar 13 TeV = 65.72(-3.01)(+3.46) pb. We also predict the fiducial cross section sigma fid(pp -> H -> gamma gamma): sigma(fid vertical bar 7 TeV) = 30.1(-2.2)(+2.3) fb, sigma(fid vertical bar 8 TeV) = 38.3(-2.8)(+2.9) fb, and sigma(fid vertical bar 13 TeV) = 85.8(-5.3)(+5.7) fb. The error limits in these predictions include the small residual high-order renormalization-scale dependence plus the uncertainty from the factorization scale. The PMC predictions show better agreement with the ATLAS measurements than the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group predictions which are based on conventional renormalization-scale setting.

  • A combinatoric shortcut to evaluate CHY-forms

    • In our recent work, we proposed a differential operator for the evaluation of the multi-dimensional residues on isolated (zero-dimensional) poles. In this paper we discuss some new insight on evaluating the (generalized) Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) forms of the scattering amplitudes using this differential operator. We introduce a tableau representation for the coefficients appearing in the proposed differential operator. Combining the tableaux with the polynomial form of the scattering equations, the evaluation of the generalized CHY form becomes a simple combinatoric problem. It is thus possible to obtain the coefficients arising in the differential operator in a straightforward way. We present the procedure for a complete solution of the n-gon amplitudes at one-loop level in a generalized CHY form. We also apply our method to fully evaluate the one-loop five-point amplitude in the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory; the final result is identical to the one obtained by Q-Cut.

    • We propose a differential operator for computing the residues associated with a class of meromorphic n-forms that frequently appear in the Cachazo-He-Yuan form of the scattering amplitudes. This differential operator is conjectured to be uniquely determined by the local duality theorem and the intersection number of the divisors in the n-form. We use the operator to evaluate the one-loop integrand of Yang-Mills theory from their generalized CHY formulae. The method can reduce the complexity of the calculation. In addition, the expression for the 1-loop four-point Yang-Mills integrand obtained in our approach has a clear correspondence with the Q-cut results.

  • In-situ heat treatment study on the nanocrystalline Cr 2 O 3 film using an environmental scanning electron microscope

    • In this work, the surface morphology changes of nanocrystalline Cr 2 O 3 film deposited on Si wafer during the heating process were observed in-situ by means of an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). The Cr 2 O 3 film cracked at high temperature due to the cause of thermal stress; the corresponding crack area percentages on the film surface were real-time evaluated using image analysis software (SISC IAS V8.0) based on the principle of gray value analysis. In the meantime, the effects of the heating temperature on the crack area percentage, phase constituents, and grain size of the Cr 2 O 3 film were also studied in detail. The results showed that the percentage of crack area on film surface first increased with the heating temperature rise, and reached the maximum value at around 980 °C, and then gradually declined again. The above trend is closely related to the changes of thermal stress and grain growth in film. In addition, the heat treatment also had a strong influence on the grain size of the Cr 2 O 3 film.

    • International trade has led to increasing levels of economic development; however, its role in altering the global phosphorus (P) demand and local P footprint (PF) is unclear. Here, through a multi-regional input–output (MRIO) analysis, we quantified the PF associated with the global consumption of agricultural products for 159 countries and 169 crops over the period of 1995–2015. The results suggested that the international network of P flows was highly connected and the flow distribution was overridingly driven by developed economies (e.g., USA and Germany) and large emerging economies (e.g., China and India). A decoupling between the PF and economic growth was observed in most countries. The high PF per capita in developed economies was mainly driven by imports from developing countries rather than domestic P applications. Our results also highlighted that international trade had two impacts on global P management. Firstly, it reduced the total global P demand from agricultural production by 16%; secondly, it intensified the imbalance of local P consumption. Therefore, the future sustainable management of P requires consideration of the original suppliers and final consumers along the global supply chains and the associated consequences on P management from both local and global perspectives.

    • We report superior terahertz parametric generation from potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) over congruent-grown lithium niobate (CLN) and lithium tantalate (CLT) in terms of parametric gain and laser damage resistance. Under the same pump and crystal configurations, the signal emerged first from KTP, 5% Mg-doped CLN, CLN, and then finally from CLT. The signal growth rate in KTP was comparable to that in 5%-Mg-doped CLN, but the signal power from KTP reached a much higher value after all the other crystals were damaged by the pump laser. We further demonstrate seeded terahertz parametric amplification in an edge-cut KTP at 5.74 THz. The THz parametric amplifier (TPA) employs a 17-mm long KTP gain crystal, pumped by a passively Q-switched pump laser at 1064 nm and seeded by a continuous-wave diode laser tuned to the signal wavelength at 1086.2 nm. With 5.8-mJ energy in a 520-ps pump pulse and 100-mW seed signal power, we measured 5W peak-power THz output from the KTP TPA with 22% pump depletion. In comparison, we measured no detectable THz output power from a similar edge-cut CLN TPA under the same pump power, detection scheme, and crystal configuration, when tuning the seed laser wavelength to 1072.2 nm and attempting to generate a radiation at 2.1 THz.

  • Ice-Water-Gas Interaction during Icebreaking by an Airgun Bubble

    • When an airgun releases high-pressure gas underwater below an ice plate, it is observed that a bubble is formed rapidly while the ice plate is broken fiercely. In order to study the ice-water-gas interaction during this transient and violent phenomenon, a set of laboratory-scale devices was designed and a series of icebreaking experiments were carried out. High-speed photography was used to capture the evolution of the bubble and the ice plate. It was found that the airgun bubble had a unique ‘pear’ shape compared with the spherical bubble generated by electric sparking. The pressure induced by the pulsation of the airgun bubble near a rigid wall was measured by the pressure sensor. The initial shockwave, oscillatory pressure peaks caused by the directional fast air injection, secondary shockwave, and pressure peak caused by the bubble jet impact were clearly recorded. Three damage patterns of ice plates were observed and corresponding reasons were analyzed. The influence of dimensionless parameters, such as airgun-ice distance (Formula presented.) and ice thickness (Formula presented.), was also investigated. The physical mechanism of ice-water-gas interaction was summarized.
