  • Divertor currents optimization procedure for JET-ILW high flux expansion experiments
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Fusion engineering and design. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0920-3796 .- 1873-7196. ; 129, s. 115-119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with a divertor coil currents optimized procedure to design High Flux Expansion (HFE) configurations in the JET tokamak aimed to study the effects of flux expansion variation on the radiation fraction and radiated power re-distribution. A number of benefits of HFE configuration have been experimentally demonstrated on TCV, EAST, NSTX and DIII-D tokamaks and are under investigation for next generation devices, as DEMO and DTT. The procedure proposed here exploits the linearized relation between the plasma-wall gaps and the Poloidal Field (PF) coil currents. Once the linearized model is provided by means of CREATE-NL code, the divertor coils currents are calculated using a constrained quadratic programming optimization procedure, in order to achieve HFE configuration. Flux expanded configurations have been experimentally realized both in ohmic and heated plasma with and without nitrogen seeding. Preliminary results on the effects of the flux expansion variation on total power radiation increase will be also briefly discussed.

  • Nonlinear dynamic analysis of D-alpha signals for type I edge localized modes characterization on JET with a carbon wall
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0741-3335 .- 1361-6587. ; 60:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of type-I ELM time-series from the JET tokamak, the world's largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment, have been investigated. The dynamic analysis has been focused on the detection of nonlinear structure in D a radiation time series. Firstly, the method of surrogate data has been applied to evaluate the statistical significance of the null hypothesis of static nonlinear distortion of an underlying Gaussian linear process. Several nonlinear statistics have been evaluated, such us the time delayed mutual information, the correlation dimension and the maximal Lyapunov exponent. The obtained results allow us to reject the null hypothesis, giving evidence of underlying nonlinear dynamics. Moreover, no evidence of low-dimensional chaos has been found; indeed, the analysed time series are better characterized by the power law sensitivity to initial conditions which can suggest a motion at the 'edge of chaos', at the border between chaotic and regular non-chaotic dynamics. This uncertainty makes it necessary to further investigate about the nature of the nonlinear dynamics. For this purpose, a second surrogate test to distinguish chaotic orbits from pseudoperiodic orbits has been applied. In this case, we cannot reject the null hypothesis which means that the ELM time series is possibly pseudo-periodic. In order to reproduce pseudo-periodic dynamical properties, a periodic state-of-the-art model, proposed to reproduce the ELM cycle, has been corrupted by a dynamical noise, obtaining time series qualitatively in agreement with experimental time series.

  • Recurrence Plots for Dynamic Analysis of Type-I ELMs at JET With a Carbon Wall
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0093-3813 .- 1939-9375. ; 47:4, s. 1871-1877
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of type-I edge-localized modes (ELM) time series from the JET tokamak, the world's largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment, have been investigated through recurrence plots (RPs). The analysis has been focused on RPs of pedestal temperature, line averaged electron density, and outer divertor D-alpha time series during experiments with a carbon wall. The analysis of RPS shows the patterns similar to those characteristics of signals exhibiting type-2 intermittency, in particular, a characteristic kite-like shape; this gives useful hints to model the temperature signal as well as the D-alpha radiation time series, with simple nonlinear maps capturing the nearly periodic behavior of type-I ELMs.

  • Experimental Validation of a Filament Transport Model in Turbulent Magnetized Plasmas
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 115:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a wide variety of natural and laboratory magnetized plasmas, filaments appear as a result of interchange instability. These convective structures substantially enhance transport in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field. According to filament models, their propagation may follow different regimes depending on the parallel closure of charge conservation. This is of paramount importance in magnetic fusion plasmas, as high collisionality in the scrape-off layer may trigger a regime transition leading to strongly enhanced perpendicular particle fluxes. This work reports for the first time on an experimental verification of this process, linking enhanced transport with a regime transition as predicted by models. Based on these results, a novel scaling for global perpendicular particle transport in reactor relevant tokamaks such as ASDEX-Upgrade and JET is found, leading to important implications for next generation fusion devices.

  • Recent progress towards a quantitative description of filamentary SOL transport
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 57:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A summary of recent results on filamentary transport, mostly obtained with the ASDEX-Upgrade tokamak (AUG), is presented and discussed in an attempt to produce a coherent picture of scrape-off layer (SOL) filamentary transport. A clear correlation is found between L-mode density shoulder formation in the outer midplane and a transition between the sheath-limited and the inertial filamentary regimes. Divertor collisionality is found to be the parameter triggering the transition. A clear reduction of the ion temperature takes place in the far SOL after the transition, both for the background and the filaments. This coincides with a strong variation of the ion temperature distribution, which deviates from Gaussianity and becomes dominated by a strong peak below 5 eV. The filament transition mechanism triggered by a critical value of collisionality seems to be generally applicable to inter-ELM H-mode plasmas, although a secondary threshold related to deuterium fueling is observed. EMC3-EIRENE simulations of neutral dynamics show that an ionization front near the main chamber wall is formed after the shoulder formation. Finally, a clear increase of SOL opacity to neutrals is observed, associated with the shoulder formation. A common SOL transport framework is proposed to account for all these results, and their potential implications for future generation devices are discussed.

  • Deep neural networks for plasma tomography with applications to JET and COMPASS
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1748-0221 .- 1748-0221. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have found applications in many image processing tasks, such as feature extraction, image classification, and object recognition. It has also been shown that the inverse of CNNs, so-called deconvolutional neural networks, can be used for inverse problems such as plasma tomography. In essence, plasma tomography consists in reconstructing the 2D plasma profile on a poloidal cross-section of a fusion device, based on line-integrated measurements from multiple radiation detectors. Since the reconstruction process is computationally intensive, a deconvolutional neural network trained to produce the same results will yield a significant computational speedup, at the expense of a small error which can be assessed using different metrics. In this work, we discuss the design principles behind such networks, including the use of multiple layers, how they can be stacked, and how their dimensions can be tuned according to the number of detectors and the desired tomographic resolution for a given fusion device. We describe the application of such networks at JET and COMPASS, where at JET we use the bolometer system, and at COMPASS we use the soft X-ray diagnostic based on photodiode arrays.

  • Assessment of erosion, deposition and fuel retention in the JET-ILW divertor from ion beam analysis data
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Materials and Energy. - : ELSEVIER. - 2352-1791. ; 12, s. 559-563
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Post-mortem analyses of individual components provide relevant information on plasma-surface interactions like tungsten erosion, beryllium deposition and plasma fuel retention with divertor tiles via implantation or co-deposition. Ion Beam techniques are ideal tools for such purposes and have been extensively used for post-mortem analyses of selected tiles from JET following each campaign. In this contribution results from tiles removed from the JET ITER-Like Wall (JET-ILW) divertor following the 2013-2014 campaign are presented. The results summarize erosion, deposition and fuel retention along the poloidal cross section of the divertor surface and provide data for comparison with the first JET-ILW campaign, showing a similar pattern of material migration with the exception of Tile 6 where the strike point time on the tile was similar to 4 times longer in 2013-2014 than in 2011-2012, which is likely to account for more material migration to this region. The W deposition on top of the Mo marker coating of Tile 4 shows that the enrichment takes place at the strike point location. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

  • Time-resolved deposition in the remote region of the JET-ILW divertor : measurements and modelling
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One crucial requirement for the development of fusion power is to know where, and how much, impurities collect in the machine, and how much of the fuelling isotope tritium will be trapped therein. The most relevant information on this issue comes from the operation of the Joint European Tokamak (JET), which is the world's largest operating tokamak and has the same interior plasma-facing materials as the next step machine, ITER. Much of the information gained so far has been from post-mortem analysis of samples collected after whole campaigns involving varied types of operation. This paper describes time-resolved measurements of the deposition rate using rotating collectors (RC) placed in remote areas of the JET divertor during the 2013-2014 campaign with the ITER-like Wall (ILW). These techniques allow the effects of different types of operation to be distinguished. Rotating collectors made of silicon discs housed behind an aperture are exposed to the plasma. Each time the magnetic field coils are ramped up for a discharge the disc rotates, providing a linear relationship between the exposed region and the discharge number. Post-mortem ion beam analyses provide information on the deposit composition as a function of the discharge number. The results show that the Be deposition average for the RC in the corners of the inner and outer divertor are 4.9 x 10(16) cm(-2) and 1.8 x 10(17) cm(-2), respectively, accumulated over an average of similar to 25 pulses. Data from the rotating collector below Tile 5 in the central region of divertor indicate a Be deposition rate of 9.3 x 10(15) cm(-2), per similar to 25 pulses.

  • A neutron camera system for MAST
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 81:10, s. 10D315-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A prototype neutron camera has been developed and installed at MAST as part of a feasibility study for a multichord neutron camera system with the aim to measure the spatial and time resolved 2.45 MeV neutron emissivity profile. Liquid scintillators coupled to a fast digitizer are used for neutron/gamma ray digital pulse shape discrimination. The preliminary results obtained clearly show the capability of this diagnostic to measure neutron emissivity profiles with sufficient time resolution to study the effect of fast ion loss and redistribution due to magnetohydrodynamic activity. A minimum time resolution of 2 ms has been achieved with a modest 1.5 MW of neutral beam injection heating with a measured neutron count rate of a few 100 kHz.

  • The 2.5 MeV neutron flux monitor for MAST
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 753, s. 72-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A proof-of-principle collimated Neutron flux Camera (NC) monitor for the measurement of the 2.45 MeV neutron emission from the deuterium–deuterium fusion reactions has been developed, installed and put into use at the Mega Ampere Spherical Tokamak (MAST). The NC measures the spatial and time resolved volume integrated neutron emissivity in deuterium fusion plasmas in the presence of auxiliary plasma heating along two equatorial and two diagonal lines of sight whose tangency radius can be varied between plasma discharges. This paper describes the NC design principles, their technical realization and its performances illustrated with experimental observations of different plasma scenarios. Neutron count rates in the range 0.1–1.5 MHz are routinely observed allowing time resolutions as high as 1 ms with a statistical uncertainty less than 10% and an energy threshold of 0.5 MeV. Examples of the effect of plasma instabilities on the neutron emission are presented. The good results obtained will be used for the design of the neutron flux camera monitor for MAST Upgrade.
