  • The pp→ppπππ reaction channels in the threshold region
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 649:2-3, s. 122-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cross section for direct neutral and charged three pion production in pp interactions was measured at excess energies in the range 160–216 MeV. That comprises the first measurement of the pp→ppπ0π0π0 reaction and the direct comparison with the pp→ppπ+π−π0 process. The experiment was performed above the η meson production threshold and the cross section could be directly normalized to the cross section of the pp→ppη reaction, with the η decaying into 3 pions. Since the same final states are selected, the measurement has a low systematical error. The measured cross section ratio σ(pp→ppπ+π−π0)/σ(pp→ppπ0π0π0) is compared to predictions of dominance of different isobars in the intermediate state.

  • eta PRODUCTION IN PROTON-PROTON COLLISIONS AT 72 MeV EXCESS ENERGY
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Modern Physics A. - 0217-751X .- 1793-656X. ; 24:2-3, s. 446-449
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of eta mesons at an excess energy of 72 MeV has been studied in the reaction pp -> pp(eta)gamma gamma. It is shown that a simple model with Pp. final states included reproduces observed differential distributions better than the same model restricted to Ss, Sd and Ds final states. The strong influence of the Pp states could be taken as an indication of rho dominance within an one boson exchange model for the excitation of N*(1535).

  • A Double-Blind Trial of Metoprolol in Acute Myocardial Infarction : Effects on Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias
  • 1983
  • Ingår i: New England Journal of Medicine. - : Massachusetts Medical Society. - 0028-4793 .- 1533-4406. ; 308:11, s. 614-618
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During a double-blind trial in which patients with suspected myocardial infarction received metoprolol or placebo, we analyzed the occurrence of ventricular tachyarrhythmias. Metoprolol (15 mg intravenously) was given as soon as possible after admission, and thereafter 200 mg was given daily for three months. Antiarrhythmic drugs were given only for ventricular fibrillation and sustained ventricular tachycardia (greater than 60 beats per second). Definite acute myocardial infarction developed in 809 of the 1395 participants, and probable infarction in 162. Metoprolol did not influence the occurrence of premature ventricular contractions or short bursts of ventricular tachycardia. However, there were 17 cases of ventricular fibrillation in the placebo group (697 patients) and only 6 in the metoprolol group (698 patients, P less than 0.05). During the hospital stay significantly fewer patients receiving metoprolol (16) than placebo (38) (P less than 0.01) required lidocaine. In a separate analysis of 145 patients, metoprolol did not influence the occurrence of premature ventricular contractions or short bursts of ventricular tachycardia during the first 24 hours of treatment. Despite a lack of effect on less serious ventricular tachyarrhythmias, metoprolol had a prophylactic effect against ventricular fibrillation in acute myocardial infarction.

  • Coupling of plasmonic nanopore pairs: facing dipoles attract each other
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Light: Science and Applications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2047-7538 .- 2095-5545. ; 5:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Control of the optical properties of nano-plasmonic structures is essential for next-generation optical circuits and high-throughput biosensing platforms. Realization of such nano-optical devices requires optical couplings of various nanostructured elements and field confinement at the nanoscale. In particular, symmetric coupling modes, also referred to as dark modes, have recently received considerable attention because these modes can confine light energy to small spaces. Although the coupling behavior of plasmonic nanoparticles has been relatively well studied, couplings of inverse structures, that is, holes and pores, remain partially unexplored. Even for the most fundamental coupling system of two dipolar holes, comparison of the symmetric and anti-symmetric coupling modes has not been performed. Here we present, for the first time, a systematic study of the symmetric and anti-symmetric coupling of nanopore pairs using cathodoluminescence by scanning transmission electron microscopy and electromagnetic simulation. The symmetric coupling mode, approximated as a pair of facing dipoles, is observed at a lower energy than that of the anti-symmetric coupling mode, indicating that the facing dipoles attract each other. The anti-symmetric coupling mode splits into the inner-and outer-edge localized modes as the coupling distance decreases. These coupling behaviors cannot be fully explained as inverses of coupled disks. Symmetric and anti-symmetric coupling modes are also observed in a short-range ordered pore array, where one pore supports multiple local resonance modes, depending on the distance to the neighboring pore. Accessibility to the observed symmetric modes by far field is also discussed, which is important for nanophotonic device applications.

  • Circuit-Specific Early Impairment of Proprioceptive Sensory Neurons in the SOD1(G93A) Mouse Model for ALS
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neuroscience. - : SOC NEUROSCIENCE. - 0270-6474 .- 1529-2401. ; 39:44, s. 8798-8815
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease in which motor neurons degenerate, resulting in muscle atrophy, paralysis, and fatality. Studies using mouse models of ALS indicate a protracted period of disease development with progressive motor neuron pathology, evident as early as embryonic and postnatal stages. Key missing information includes concomitant alterations in the sensorimotor circuit essential for normal development and function of the neuromuscular system. Leveraging unique brainstem circuitry, we show in vitro evidence for reflex circuit-specific postnatal abnormalities in the jaw proprioceptive sensory neurons in the well-studied SOD1(G)(93A) mouse. These include impaired and arrhythmic action potential burst discharge associated with a deficit in Nav 1.6 Na+ channels. However, the mechanoreceptive and nociceptive trigeminal ganglion neurons and the visual sensory retinal ganglion neurons were resistant to excitability changes in age-matched SOD1(G)(93A )mice. Computational modeling of the observed disruption in sensory patterns predicted asynchronous self-sustained motor neuron discharge suggestive of imminent reflexive defects, such as muscle fasciculations in ALS. These results demonstrate a novel reflex circuit-specific proprioceptive sensory abnormality in ALS.

  • Mutated alleles of the rod and cone Na-Ca+K-exchanger genes in patients with retinal diseases
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science. - 1552-5783. ; 43:6, s. 1971-1979
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE. To study the possible involvement of the rod (SLC24A1) and cone (SLC24A2) Na-Ca+K exchanger (NCKX) genes in retinal diseases. METHODS. DNA was collected from unrelated patients with retinal disease, mainly from North America. A human genomic library was screened with the cone NCKX cDNA, and hybridizing clones were sequenced to determine the genomic organization of the SLC24A2 gene. The single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) technique and direct sequencing were used to screen the patients' DNA for mutations in SLC24A1 and SLC24A2. The effect of selected missense changes on protein function was tested by measuring potassium-dependent Na-Ca exchange of the mutant proteins expressed in insect cells. RESULTS. Twenty-seven novel sequence changes were found in the rod NCKX gene, 21 of which are unlikely to be pathogenic, because they did not cosegregate with the disease or did not affect conserved regions of the protein. Of the remaining six, two were frameshift mutations found in one patient each. If translated, these alleles would encode nonfunctional proteins. Three of the six possibly pathogenic mutations were missense changes located in conserved regions, and their protein functions were assayed. Only one (Ile992Thr) had a significantly low level of exchanger function, but it was found in two unrelated patients who were heterozygotes with different retinal diseases, and this mutation could not be unequivocally associated with either disease. The last of the six changes is likely to create a new splice acceptor site. The genomic organization of the cone NCKX gene was determined, and it contained 11 exons with a few splice variants. Fifteen novel sequence changes were identified in the cone exchanger gene in patients with a cone dysfunction or degeneration. Only three of these sequence changes, all missense changes found in heterozygous patients, were considered possibly pathogenic. Functional analysis showed only a slight reduction in the activity of the corresponding mutant proteins. CONCLUSIONS. Although variant alleles of the rod and cone NCKX genes were found, none could be definitively associated with a specific retinal disease. The human phenotype associated with mutant exchanger alleles remains unknown.
