  • Influences of Predator Cues on the Incidence of Ungulates, Mesopredators and Top Predators in the Greater Khingan Mountains, Northeastern China
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Pakistan Journal of Zoology. - : ResearchersLinks Ltd. - 0030-9923. ; 55:1, s. 269-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Top predators can affect the behaviour of prey species via lethal (direct kill) or non-lethal effects (i.e., through predation risk). For example, prey species may move from areas perceived as risky to safer spaces where predation risk is lower, which can have important consequences for investment in foraging, movement, and mating, and for the behaviour and habitat use of other species, such as mesopredators. These changes in prey and mesopredator behaviours are likely mediated by the presence of predator cues in the environment. Here, we test how different predator cues (visual and odor) from familiar and novel predators (brown bear and Amur tiger, respectively) influence ungulate, mesopredator, and top predator visitation rates to camera trap sites in a national nature reserve in China. The comparison of these predator types is of particular interest in this region as Amur tigers may shortly be reintroduced here. We found that visual but not odour cues significantly affected ungulate visitation rates: ungulates showed reduced visitation to sites with either a novel or familiar visual predator cue. When combined, mesopredators and top predators also showed a small reduction in visitation rates to tiger cue sites compared to bear cue sites, suggesting a possible novel predator effect. The generalisation and contextual importance of predator cues for prey and mesopredators have been little studied. Understanding how species respond to novel cues may help to determine extinction probabilities and overall plasticity in the face of change. This study is, therefore, an important step forward in understanding predator cue responses at the community level. This is also the first study to test the ecological function of Amur tiger cues in the wild environment and may serve as essential information in the rewilding process of captive Amur tiger plans.

  • Radio interferometric imaging of RS Oph bipolar ejecta for the 2021 nova outburst
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 666
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recurrent nova and symbiotic binary RS Oph erupted again in August 2021 for its eighth known outburst. We observed RS Oph 34 days after the outburst at 5 GHz with the European VLBI Network (EVN). The radio image is elongated over the east-west direction for a total extension of about 90 mas (or about 240 AU at the Gaia DR3 distance d = 2.68-0.15+0.17 kpc), and shows a bright and compact central component coincident with the Gaia astrometric position, and two lobes east and west of it, expanding perpendicular to the orbital plane. By comparing with the evolution of emission-line profiles on optical spectra, we found the leading edge of the lobes to be expanding at ~7550 km s-1, and i = 54 as the orbital inclination of the binary. The 2021 radio structure is remarkably similar to that observed following the 2006 eruption. The obscuring role of the density enhancement on the orbital plane (DEOP) is discussed in connection to the time-dependent visibility of the receding lobe in the background to the DEOP, and the origin of the triple-peaked profiles is traced to the ring structure formed by the nova ejecta impacting the DEOP.

  • Genome sequence of Francisella Tularensis subspecies holarctica Strain FSC200, isolated from a child with Tularemia
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bacteriology. - : American Society for Microbiology. - 0021-9193 .- 1098-5530. ; 194:24, s. 6965-6966
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we report the complete, accurate 1.89-Mb genome sequence of Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica strain FSC200, isolated in 1998 in the Swedish municipality Ljusdal, which is in an area where tularemia is highly endemic. This genome is important because strain FSC200 has been extensively used for functional and genetic studies of Francisella and is well-characterized.

  • Dabigatran Versus Warfarin in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation An Analysis of Patients Undergoing Cardioversion
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Circulation. - 0009-7322 .- 1524-4539. ; 123:2, s. 131-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background-The Randomized Evaluation of Long-Term Anticoagulation Therapy (RE-LY) trial compared dabigatran 110 mg BID (D110) and 150 mg BID (D150) with warfarin for stroke prevention in 18 113 patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Methods and Results-Cardioversion on randomized treatment was permitted. Precardioversion transesophageal echocardiography was encouraged, particularly in dabigatran-assigned patients. Data from before, during, and 30 days after cardioversion were analyzed. A total of 1983 cardioversions were performed in 1270 patients: 647, 672, and 664 in the D110, D150, and warfarin groups, respectively. For D110, D150, and warfarin, transesophageal echocardiography was performed before 25.5%, 24.1%, and 13.3% of cardioversions, of which 1.8%, 1.2%, and 1.1% were positive for left atrial thrombi. Continuous treatment with study drug for >= 3 weeks before cardioversion was lower in D110 (76.4%) and D150 (79.2%) compared with warfarin (85.5%; P<0.01 for both). Stroke and systemic embolism rates at 30 days were 0.8%, 0.3%, and 0.6% (D110 versus warfarin, P=0.71; D150 versus warfarin, P=0.40) and similar in patients with and without transesophageal echocardiography. Major bleeding rates were 1.7%, 0.6%, and 0.6% (D110 versus warfarin, P=0.06; D150 versus warfarin, P=0.99). Conclusions-This study is the largest cardioversion experience to date and the first to evaluate a novel anticoagulant in this setting. The frequencies of stroke and major bleeding within 30 days of cardioversion on the 2 doses of dabigatran were low and comparable to those on warfarin with or without transesophageal echocardiography guidance. Dabigatran is a reasonable alternative to warfarin in patients requiring cardioversion.
