  • Making Sense of Changing Hats : A study of the Nigeria, Vietnam, and Azerbaijan/Kazakhstan projects within the Norwegian Statoil and British BP strategic alliance
  • 2016
  • In: Africa Journal of Management. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2332-2373 .- 2332-2381. ; 2:2, s. 188-209
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • To explore group-based identities and collective sensemaking in the context of a cross-border alliance, a qualitative exploratory study was initiated. The emphasis was on interpretation of issues, within and around an inter-firm partnership and the alliance process, perceived by those involved as important. The BP and Statoil strategic alliance, formed to carry out joint oil and gas exploration and development in Nigeria, Vietnam and Azerbaijan/Kazakhstan, provided 52 interviews with staff from both partner headquarters and team members from the three projects. By studying an alliance process from multiple perspectives, it was possible to identify differences in sensemaking across different groups of employees. The organizational level (the alliance business unit level and the alliance team level) proved to be a more important for shared sensemaking of the alliance process, than group identities such as nationalities, companies or locations. The alliance business unit level had been tasked with strategically developing and shaping the alliance, while the alliance teams had the operational responsibility for the project. The main theoretical implication is the primacy of the project team-based identity to sensemaking regarding critical issues, emphasizing the importance of developing an alliance “supra-identity”. Implications for inter-firm partnerships in Africa and Asia are also addressed.

  • Desilencing Complexities : Addressing Categorization in Cross-cultural Management with Intersectionality and Relationality
  • 2018
  • In: International Studies of Management and Organization. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0020-8825 .- 1558-0911. ; 48:3, s. 294-313
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A central focus of cross-cultural management research is how individuals and organizations differ across national cultures and how that fundamentally shapes their thoughts and actions and serves as a unit of identification. In this article, we critically reconsider the essential categorical nature of culture, problematizing categorization and questioning national culture as the primary basis of differentiation. We draw on intersectionality, an approach that helps understand how multiple categories are experienced by the individual, and on relationality, an approach that conceptualizes people, organizations, and their actions within dynamic patterns of relations and cultural meanings. Both approaches challenge the primacy, unity, and separateness of any given category, the a priori determination of categories (and associated boundaries) in research, and the nature and stability of boundaries. Based on this we advance notions of boundary work and boundary shifting that help explore how today’s sociocultural groups and categories, and the boundaries that separate them, emerge and change. We conclude that, while the extant cross-cultural literature has come far in identifying differences, relationality and intersectionality can enable cross-cultural scholars to engage in research practice that better reflects the complexities of sociocultural life. We contribute to theory by suggesting why and how these two approaches can be used to explore complex cross-cultural management phenomena.

  • Dissecting generations of migrant identities within a diaspora
  • 2023
  • In: The Palgrave Handbook of Global Migration in International Business. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783031388859 - 9783031388866 - 9783031388880 ; , s. 119-141
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The dissection of migrant identities is like a complex puzzle. Although cultural values comprise an integral component of cultural identity, the personal values of migrants are still understudied. This study examines the individual-level cultural values held by migrants who share a single ethnicity. Migrants are compared across age cohorts, ethnic generations and emigration waves as well as to nonemigrant home country nationals. The similarities between the groups lend support to the stability of cultural values. However, the differences revealed across the various migrant groups are also surprising insofar as they are not as large as might be expected given the physical, political and age separation between many of the groups. As migrant groups differed from nonemigrants, we question whether the timing of emigration is as important as the act of migration itself in shaping the cultural identities of migrants.

  • The benefits of global teams for international organizations : HR implications
  • 2018
  • In: International Journal of Human Resource Management. - : ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 0958-5192 .- 1466-4399. ; 29:14, s. 2137-2158
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In this special issue we aim to advance the theoretical, conceptual and empirical knowledge about the relationship between global teams and human resource management in international organizations. We argue that although the prevalence of global teams in international organizations is rapidly rising, simultaneously affecting the management of firms on global, regional and local levels, the response of firms and scholars alike to such changes has been slower, especially in the area of IHRM. The HR function in organizations could play a vital role in understanding, managing and leveraging the benefits of global teams to ensure that they contribute positively to the performance of firms, organizational units, and people. We demonstrate that there is still a disconnect in this respect and we highlight several areas in which the increasing use of global teams may challenge our conventional understanding of IHRM issues, and at the same time offer solutions for improvement in international organizations. The selected articles in this special issue provide both theoretical and practitioner implications by highlighting the need to explore the relationship between global teams and IHRM more generally and fully, as well as the need for HR practitioners and IHRM scholars to focus more on the human' and less on the resources' aspect. We trust that readers of this issue will agree that the articles all offer novel insights into key issues that open new avenues for further research in this nascent yet promising area.

  • Mobile backhaul in heterogeneous network deployments : Technology options and power consumption
  • 2012
  • In: 14th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks. ; , s. 1-7
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Mobile communication networks account for 0.5% of the global energy consumption, a value that is expected to double within the next five years. For this reason, means of reducing the energy consumption in cellular mobile radio networks has recently gained great interest within the research community. In mobile networks the backhaul contribution to the total power consumption is usually neglected because of its limited impact compared to that of the radio base stations. However, meeting the almost exponential increase in mobile data traffic requires a large number of (mainly small) base stations. This means that backhaul networks will take a significant share of the cost and the energy consumption in future systems. Their actual contribution to the energy consumption will depend on the radio base station deployment scenario as well as on the technology and topology choices for the backhaul itself. This paper presents an initial assessment of the power consumption of two established backhaul technologies, i.e., fiber and microwave. For the microwave case, three backhaul topologies are considered, i.e., tree, ring and star, while for the fiber case only one topology is analysed, i.e., a dedicated point-to-point star. The presented results, assuming off-the-shelf products and based on todays network capacity levels, confirm the importance of considering the backhaul when minimizing the total power consumption in heterogeneous network scenarios. They also show the impact of the basic technology and topology choices of the backhaul for minimizing total power consumption.
