  • A comparative study of 10 different methods on numerical solving of point reactor neutron kinetics equations

    • Point reactor neutron kinetics equations describe the time dependent neutron density variation in a nuclear reactor core. These equations are widely applied to nuclear system numerical simulation and nuclear power plant operational control. This paper analyses the characteristics of 10 different basic or normal methods to solve the point reactor neutron kinetics equations. These methods are: explicit and implicit Euler method, explicit and implicit four order Runge-Kutta method, Taylor polynomial method, power series method, decoupling method, end point floating method, Hermite method, Gear method. Three different types of step reactivity values are introduced respectively at initial time when point reactor neutron kinetics equations are calculated using different methods, which are positive reactivity, negative reactivity and higher positive reactivity. The calculation results show that (i) minor relative error can be gain after three types of step reactivity are introduced, when explicit or implicit four order Runge-Kutta method, Taylor polynomial method, power series method, end point floating method or Hermite method is taken. These methods which are mentioned above are appropriate for solving point reactor neutron kinetics equations. (ii) the relative error of decoupling method is large, under the calculation condition of this paper. When a higher reactivity is introduced, the calculation of decoupling method cannot be convergence. (iii) after three types of step reactivity are introduced respectively, the relative error of implicit Euler method is higher than any other method except decoupling method. The third highest is Gear method. (iv) when the higher reactivity is introduced, the relative error of explicit and implicit Euler method are almost coincident, and higher than any other methods obviously. (v) 4 methods are suitable for solution on these given conditions, which are implicit Runge-Kutta method, Taylor polynomial method, power series method and end point floating method, considering both the accuracy and stiffness.

  • Association of Comorbidity With Healthcare Utilization in People Living With Dementia, 2010–2019 : A Population-Based Cohort Study

    • Evidence on the healthcare utilization associated with comorbidity in people with dementia is lacking in Chinese societies. This study aimed to quantify healthcare utilization associated with comorbidity that is common in people living with dementia. We conducted a cohort study using population-based data from Hong Kong public hospitals. Individuals aged 35+ with a dementia diagnosis between 2010 and 2019 were included. Among 88,151 participants, people with at least two comorbidities accounted for 81.2%. Estimates from negative binomial regressions showed that compared to those with one or no comorbid condition other than dementia, adjusted rate ratios of hospitalizations among individuals with six or seven and eight or more conditions were 1.97 [98.75% CI, 1.89–2.05] and 2.74 [2.63–2.86], respectively; adjusted rate ratios of Accident and Emergency department visits among individuals with six or seven and eight or more conditions were 1.53 [1.44–1.63] and 1.92 [1.80–2.05], respectively. Comorbid chronic kidney diseases were associated with the highest adjusted rate ratios of hospitalizations (1.81 [1.74–1.89]), whereas comorbid chronic ulcer of the skin was associated with the highest adjusted rate ratios of Accident and Emergency department visits (1.73 [1.61–1.85]). Healthcare utilization for individuals with dementia differed substantially by both the number of comorbid chronic conditions and the presence of some specific comorbid conditions. These findings further highlight the importance of taking account of multiple long-term conditions in tailoring the care approach and developing healthcare plans for people with dementia.

  • Dark Energy Surveyed Year 1 results : calibration of cluster mis-centring in the redMaPPer catalogues

    • The centre determination of a galaxy cluster from an optical cluster finding algorithm can be offset from theoretical prescriptions or N-body definitions of its host halo centre. These offsets impact the recovered cluster statistics, affecting both richness measurements and the weak lensing shear profile around the clusters. This paper models the centring performance of the redMaPPer cluster finding algorithm using archival X-ray observations of redMaPPer-selected clusters. Assuming the X-ray emission peaks as the fiducial halo centres, and through analysing their offsets to the redMaPPer centres, we find that similar to 75 +/- 8 per cent of the redMaPPer clusters are well centred and the mis-centred offset follows a Gamma distribution in normalized, projected distance. These mis-centring offsets cause a systematic underestimation of cluster richness relative to the well-centred clusters, for which we propose a descriptive model. Our results enable the DES Y1 cluster cosmology analysis by characterizing the necessary corrections to both the weak lensing and richness abundance functions of the DES Y1 redMaPPer cluster catalogue.

    • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been the most common chronic liver disease in the world, including the developing countries. NAFLD is metabolic disease with significant lipid deposition in the hepatocytes of the liver, which is usually associated with oxidative stress, inflammation and fibrogenesis, and insulin resistance. Progressive NAFLD can develop into non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) or hepatocellular carcinoma. The current evidence proposes that environmental pollutants promote development and progression of NAFLD, and autophagy plays a vital role but is multifactorial affected in NAFLD. In this review, we analyzed on the regulations of common environmental pollutants on autophagy in NAFLD. To clarify the involved roles of autophagy, we discussed the dysregulation of autophagy by environmental pollutants in adipose tissue and gut, and their interactions with liver, as well as epigenetic regulation on autophagy by environmental pollutants. Furthermore, protective roles of potential therapeutic treatments on the multiple-hits of autophagy in NAFLD were descripted.

  • Computed tomography volumetry of esophageal cancer - the role of semiautomatic assessment

    • BackgroundThe clinical and research value of Computed Tomography (CT) volumetry of esophageal cancer tumor size remains controversial. Development in CT technique and image analysis has made CT volumetry less cumbersome and it has gained renewed attention. The aim of this study was to assess esophageal tumor volume by semi-automatic measurements as compared to manual.MethodsA total of 23 esophageal cancer patients (median age 65, range 51-71), undergoing CT in the portal-venous phase for tumor staging, were retrospectively included between 2007 and 2012. One radiology resident and one consultant radiologist measured the tumor volume by semiautomatic segmentation and manual segmentation. Reproducibility of the respective measurements was assessed by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and by average deviation from mean.ResultsMean tumor volume was 46ml (range 5-137ml) using manual segmentation and 42ml (range 3-111ml) using semiautomatic segmentation. Semiautomatic measurement provided better inter-observer agreement than traditional manual segmentation. The ICC was significantly higher for semiautomatic segmentation in comparison to manual segmentation (0.86, 0.56, p<0.01). The average absolute percentage difference from mean was reduced from 24 to 14% (p<0.001) when using semiautomatic segmentation.ConclusionsSemiautomatic analysis outperforms manual analysis for assessment of esophageal tumor volume, improving reproducibility.

  • Improved Heat Spreading Performance of Functionalized Graphene in Microelectronic Device Application

    • It is demonstrated that a graphene-based film (GBF) functionalized with silane molecules strongly enhances thermal performance. The resistance temperature detector results show that the inclusion of silane molecules doubles the heat spreading ability. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations show that the thermal conductivity () of the GBF increased by 15%-56% with respect to the number density of molecules compared to that with the nonfunctionalized graphene substrate. This increase in is attributed to the enhanced in-plane heat conduction of the GBF, resulting from the simultaneous increase of the thermal resistance between the GBF and the functionalized substrate limiting cross-plane phonon scattering. Enhancement of the thermal performance by inserting silane-functionalized molecules is important for the development of next-generation electronic devices and proposed application of GBFs for thermal management.

  • Prescription Patterns of Antidementia and Psychotropic Drugs in People Living With Dementia : Findings From the Clinical Pathway Study of Alzheimer's Disease in China

    • Objectives: Evidence about prescribing patterns of dementia medication in China is lacking. This study aimed to examine prescribing rates of antidementia and psychotropic drugs and factors associated with drug prescription for dementia in China.Design: A multicenter observational study.Setting and Participants: This study employed cross-sectional data from the Clinical Pathway for Alzheimer's Disease in China study that was conducted in 28 memory clinics at tertiary hospitals across 14 provinces between 2012 and 2013. Patients aged ≥45 years with a diagnosis of dementia were included.Methods: Antidementia and psychotropic drugs were classified according to the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical codes. Odds ratios (ORs) of putative factors associated with prescription patterns were estimated using logistic regressions.Results: A total of 751 respondents were included in this study, 77.8% of whom were prescribed antidementia drugs, and 33.0% were prescribed at least 1 psychotropic drug. The concomitant prescription rate of antidementia and psychotropic drugs was 24.1%. Frontotemporal dementia [OR 9.92 (99.17% CI 3.08-42.70)], severe dementia [4.25 (1.88-9.79)], and apathy [1.94 (1.18-3.20)] were significantly associated with an elevated likelihood of memantine prescription. Psychotic symptoms [1.84 (1.02-3.35)], agitation [1.91 (1.08-3.40)], and depressive symptoms [2.10 (1.12-3.94)] were significantly associated with the coprescription of antidementia and psychotropic agents.Conclusions and Implications: The prescribing rate of antidementia drugs in the study sample was higher, whereas the rate of coprescription of psychotropic and antidementia drugs was lower than reported in Western studies. Dementia prescription practice was generally consistent with clinical guidelines in memory clinics in China, whereas the prescription of antidementia and psychotropic medication mainly depended on patients’ clinical symptoms.

    • Organ-on-a-chip systems areminiaturizedmicrofluidic 3D human tissue and organ models designed to recapitulate the important biological and physiological parameters of their in vivo counterparts. They have recently emerged as a viable platform for personalized medicine and drug screening. These in vitro models, featuring biomimetic compositions, architectures, and functions, are expected to replace the conventional planar, static cell cultures and bridge the gap between the currently used preclinical animal models and the human body. Multiple organoid models may be further connected together through the microfluidics in a similar manner in which they are arranged in vivo, providing the capability to analyze multiorgan interactions. Although a wide variety of human organ-on-a-chip models have been created, there are limited efforts on the integration of multisensor systems. However, in situ continual measuring is critical in precise assessment of the microenvironment parameters and the dynamic responses of the organs to pharmaceutical compounds over extended periods of time. In addition, automated and noninvasive capability is strongly desired for long-term monitoring. Here, we report a fully integrated modular physical, biochemical, and optical sensing platform through a fluidics-routing breadboard, which operates organ-on-a-chip units in a continual, dynamic, and automated manner.We believe that this platform technology has paved a potential avenue to promote the performance of current organ-on-a-chip models in drug screening by integrating a multitude of real-time sensors to achieve automated in situ monitoring of biophysical and biochemical parameters.
